I always felt sorry for Joe Dante. He released a decent werewolf movie with The Howling, only for John Landis to make the more successful American Werewolf in London the same year. He then made a brilliant horror comedy with Gremlins, which was overshadowed by Ghostbusters the same year. He then made a fairly decent movie about kid mistfits with Explorers, which was overshadowed by The Goonies the same year. He then goes on to make the excellent Innerspace, which was largely ignored as '87 had some amazing films such as Robocop, Princess Bride, Predator, The Lost Boys and Evil Dead 2. From then on, it felt like he gave up trying. It seems like Dante had such bad luck with his career.

@@aries4378 Definitely. I've always loved his style of film making, and his style of humour. It's interesting how his short film (and George Miller's) on The Twilight Zone movie completely shits on Landis' and Spielberg's sections from a great height, when they're supposed to be the more accomplished directors.

Got to meet and talk with Zach Galligan recently. He kept talking about how innovative "Gremlins 2" was, how Rick Baker's animatronics were amazing and how certain pieces of technology had to be basically invented for the movie. He seemed really proud of this one.

Other things he mentioned: 1. Chris Columbus apparently wrote a "Gremlins 3" script, but if it gets made, probably won't be a Gremlins movie. It'll just be an unspecified Chris Columbus monster movie. 2. If there was a "Gremlins 3," he doesn't think Joe Dante would be able to direct it because he's in his 70's and movie studios prefer younger directors. (My rebuttal to this was George Miller, who came back to direct "Mad Max: Fury Road" for Warner Brothers in his 70's.) 3. His dream director for "Gremlins 3" is Edgar Wright. 4. One of his favorite movies of the last few years is "Sicario." 5. If there is a "Gremlins 3," he thinks Gizmo has to die in it, because of all the death, destruction, and chaos he's responsible for.

I've always assumed the employees clocked in and out with an old style time clock but everything else is so futuristic was due to Clamp wanting to appear futuristic but when you peel the curtain back it's just another building, or just another office. When I was roughly about 5 or 6 there was a Gremlins ride at a WB themepark here in Australia. It essentially starts with you all in a cinema watching an old movie which then gets interrupted when the Gremlins ruin the film reel and you go on what is essentially like a ride out of the the cinema themed as an escape (at least that's what I remember). Looking back now, it probably would have been kind of awesome. Except for the fact I couldn't deal with Gremlins as a kid, I liked Terminator 2, Jurassic Park, Aliens, but for some reason I just couldn't deal with Gremlins, they spooked the shit out of me. So naturally, my family decided to take me on this ride under the pretense of just going to watch a movie for the afternoon. That shit sticks with you.

I was 22 when this movie came out and I saw it in opening weekend. I was laughing so hard at it that my girlfriend at the time got angry with me because of how loud I was laughing and she felt I was drawing unneeded attention of the entire theater. I haven't seen this movie since then, but looking at the part with the beaker and words: Acid, don't throw in face. Just started me howling. It's was probably where one gag just built on another for me to the point where I would laugh at anything. My girlfriend really let me know of her displeasure with me at the part with Leonard Maltin where I just lost it at that point. I later realized the scene was pretty corny, but they threw so many gags one after another that I pretty much had difficulty thinking. What has kept me from watching it again is that later upon reflection of the movie I felt they just basically made a parody of the first movie and I felt it wasn't worth my time. Watching this review gives me a new appreciation for it so I'll probably look at it again.

True story: I was working in a theatre when G2 came out. The night before, after the second show ended, the projectionist ran the print of G2 (this would be a Thursday nite, as the release date was Friday) and we, the staff, hung out to watch because we all loved Gremlins. When that part with the break happened -- we almost all pooped ourselves. When the shadows came up, i turned to look at the projectionist booth window and he had a giant grin on his face.

I went to this movie with friends, and as we were about to go in, the (usher? cinema employee?) reminded us of their refund policy if something happened with the film. That seemed a bit odd because they don't really talk about that. THEN the film breaks as part of the film and we were concerned at first and saying "well, we are certainly going to take advantage of that policy!" but then when it was revealed we all went OH, that is why she said that to us! so, that was a bit of fun from the theatre! I still remember that. And it made the movie that much more fun!

I’ve always loved Gremlins. It was my first introduction to horror. Gremlins 2 Is the perfect sequel. It’s more gremlins. I love it. “Batman” and “Batman Returns” / “Gremlins” and “Gremlins 2” very close to my heart. I felt like how you can’t trust technology and all this coldness and numbers. Just re-watched both movies (first time since I was young) and while I still love the mysticism flair and feeling-of-a-gone-era of the original, I *think* Gremlins 2 is now my favorite. That massive, non-stop mayhem of Gremlins attacking everyone around an hysterical Phoebe Cates is genuinely impressive, even by today standards. Plus, I do recall that a lot of people did fall for the reel-burning gag back then. That's the kind of "gotcha" moments you don't get that often anymore.

Also, maybe Billy actually brought his dog to NYC, but abandoned him, and that's why the dog hangs out in front of his apartment eating trash. Maybe there was an entire sub-plot involving Billy's abuse towards his dog, but it had to be cut for time. That's how I'd like to imagine it anyway.

29:43 The film break scene always captured my interest. At the time I was reading the novelization and when this scene happens Brain Gremlin ties up the author and, briefly, takes over the book. Then, of course, the movie as released in theatres. BUT when Gremlins 2 came out on VHS that scene was different as well - where the gremlins take over the TV and switch around the channels. I believe the DVD restores that spot to how it was seen in the theatres (I kind of wish the VHS version was in the deleted scenes and not gone entirely). I was in middle school when this came out and it captured my imagination where depending on the media you were using, the scene changed. It's probably my favorite way of how they used multi-media.

We saw the movie the day it came out in theaters. That scene got us all. We're looking back to the projection booth to see what's going on. Then the Gremlin shadows come up and we all had a laugh. It was an interactive part of the movie and was really cool. I think I had the 02 version. I was mad because it's jus bare bones and basic (a lot of DVD releases were doing that then forcing you to rebuy them later when the do one that has added features). I may buy it on Blu-Ray, eventually. Honestly the Hulk version is my favorite. Like I said above I like that the part differs depending on the media and they put in that little extra effort on each.
