Greta Thunberg blasts world leaders in emotional speech at UN climate summit: "How dare you"

Teenage climate change activist Greta Thunberg on Monday opened the United Nations Climate Action Summit with an angry condemnation of world leaders for failing to take strong measures to combat climate change.
Thunberg, visibly emotional, said in shaky but stern remarks at the opening of the summit that the generations that have polluted the most have burdened her and her generation with the extreme impacts of climate change.
"This is all wrong. I shouldn't be up here. I should be back in school on the other side of the ocean yet you all come to us young people for hope. How dare you," she said.
"You have stolen my dreams and my childhood with your empty words," Thunberg said.
Days after millions of young people took to the streets worldwide to demand emergency action on climate change, leaders gathered for the annual United Nations General Assembly were to try to inject fresh momentum into stalling efforts to curb carbon emissions.

That is not the whole story, palm oil has some of the greatest yields we know of. If you change to a different type of oil producing crop it will take up more land to produce the same amount as with palm oil. Further incentivizing deforestation by burning rainforests. The best thing to do is to buy sustainably produced palm oil where minimal land is used effectively and extra land is then returned to new rainforests through preservation work. I do agree with you that supply chains can be long and that not using products that are farmed in the tropics is a good way to avoid supporting deforestation.

Most of these comments are mocking her just for being young and saying that it’s not the business of a child like her to be out there talking about climate change. Yet when adult scientists do the same thing, we ignore them. We should be proud of this young woman for taking a stand and becoming a leader in such an important discussion, in spite of her age. Most of us aren’t even doing half as much as she is for our environment, and yet we act as if we have the right to criticize her? How blind and contemptuous do you have to be to hate on someone for doing what needs to be done when hardly anyone else will? I for one am proud of Greta Thunberg and her efforts. Not only for taking a stand on climate change, but for doing it in spite of her age. She’s doing more than many adults are. She’s a true role model for our youth.
