Dylan Martin Does anybody really care about the mainstream though? The genres still being made, who cares what other people are into. They can listen to whatever floats their boat. The music is still out there, if people want it they can go find it instead of going “hurr durr millennials”
@artvjon6 жыл бұрын
It matters because it’s not profitable to be in a band anymore. Labels rarely sign bands to good contracts, and rock in the mainstream means paychecks for artists to keep making music. It’s hard to compete with people who literally make shitty trap songs in their bedroom and become millionaires. Rock is most definitely on life support and the bands that are out there succeeding are only doing so because of supportive fans and touring.
@parkviewmo6 жыл бұрын
My view of many current rock bands is that sort of like a boys clubhouse that says, ""Keep out! Grown-ups, Girls, and All You Weak and Uncool Kids!" Rock is not mainstream because, to be popular, it has to welcome a diverse audience. If you want your rock dystopian and full of tough guys, that's okay. As you say, I just don't dig it.

The #1 complaint for GVF is that they sound too derivative of other bands or styles. But then I go and tune the radio to the modern rock channel and I literally can't tell all the bands apart. They all sound like each other and I'm just glad that Greta Van Fleet doesn't sound like them. To me they sound distinctive.
@godnotavailable20946 жыл бұрын
The modern rock stuff sucks. Breaking Benjamin, Three Days Grace, Seether, Shinedown, etc. All these awful bands that just sound like dumbed-down post-grunge. Greta Van Fleet certainly sounds better than those bands, but while they might be distinct among modern bands, their formula has been done a thousand times before by bands a few decades ago.

Alex Massey I respect other opinions, but I truly don’t get the whole zeppelin thing. Yes there are some songs highway tune and safari song that sound similar, but not so similar to where it’s like a tribute band. When I listen to their music, I hear classic rock, blues, and folk all put together.
@OkByeNw6 жыл бұрын
@@godnotavailable2094 yeah, most of those bands sound flat and indistinguishable to me. In a world where basically everything has been done before, at least Greta Van Fleet sounds layered and has recognizable riffs and lyrics.

To start: I'm not going to pretend my generation 'needs rock,' because some people don't connect to it the same way I don't connect to modern pop. I do connect to rock though, this band especially. I will say, however, they are doing a fantastic job reintroducing the classic rock sound. Secondly: I doubted they were going to advance rock forward like Sgt. Pepper did on their first true album. Not to make the comparison to who are essentially music gods, but the Beatles' first album was mainly composed of covers of other songs. It took three-four years (Revolver/Sgt. Pepper) for them to truly synthesize their influences and run forward in a major way. Who's to say this band couldn't do the same if we just wait? Anyways, philosophical ramblings adise, this album is pretty damn good and I connect to it in a way I don't for most music post-1980, and I can't wait to see where this band goes next!

What differentiates GVF from other Led Zeppelin ripoffs is timing. They are rising up when the music scene, especially the rock scene, is so damn dull. Rock is only getting by after deriving from Hip-hop to appeal to this generation. GVF is a revival in my mind. Rock n Roll isn't dead, but alot of people forget what it meant and what it was about. That's why GVF is so important. This new album reminds me so much of something from the 60s with its message whilst incorporating Zeppelin and some Heartland rock. Excuse my sentimentality, I'm just optimistic about the bands future. They are around my age, so I look forward to growing with them and hear them explore a sound of their own.

Burton You just need to scratch that itch with something new, not everything has to sound exactly as things did 40 years ago. I'd recommend checking out King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard for psychodelic stuff with a modern edge, try Idles for some punk rock, maybe even Ghost for some throwback metal sounds. They are not rising because the rock scene is dull, they're rising cause of people that don't want to leave their nostalgia bubble and are too scared to experiment with new stuff

I really don't know what to think of them...on one hand, it's really great that a hard rock band like them gets some publicity and that finally people seem to give "handmade" music a chance again. It's just a refresher for the music as a whole...but on the other hand, their song structure is pretty boring, most songs sound pretty similar and...am i the only one who thinks it's kinda weird that they just popped into existance and suddenly are praised as the saviors of rock as a whole with their DEBUT album? It's been a long time since I've seen marketing as aggresive as in that case

Thanks for the review Jon I can't wait to hear it today! If you like this 70's style rock music please check the new album "Wasteland" by this band called Uncle Acid And The Deadbeats.

Trevor Burns I like records that don’t sound like shit. Unfortunately, that uncle acid new album has the production value of 0.

The album was great, Age of man is a master piece. Your the one was a little simple and country but they were 17 years old when they wrote it. I do wish Thunderstomp was on the album as that is a killer tune. But other than that its great.

I personally don’t think any band can compare with rush. They’re on a whole other pedestal than every single other rock n roll band. Maybe I’m a bit bias lol

glad you reviewed this!!! I discovered GVF a week ago and they're already one of my favorite bands. The Cold Wind is my personal favorite track, but You're The One is my least favorite. really don't like that one

After hearing Anthem, I’m a little bit concerned on how I’m gonna enjoy the album. I think they’re a bit cringeworthy; their whole vibe and brand is just a little goofy but not in the fun way, more in an annoying way. Looking at their twitter and the diction they use that makes no sense, looking at their outfits, their live performances, their whole “we are a peaceful bunch” kind of deal, it’s just a bit ridiculous in my opinion. They have potential, but I’m not sure they’ll realize it based on their current trajectory...

That’s not to say I don’t like some of their songs, but the overall vibe of the band I don’t really like and there’s a few songs I don’t really dig very much.

Even though this is technically their “ first album “, it’s nowhere near as good as the first double ep. it’s ok, but there are no real standout songs. There’s no safari song or highway tune to get you moving, no variation. It sounds like an album of all filler tracks. I was kinda underwhelmed
