MG I can deal with the actual music, I just can't forgive what he's doing vocally as it's absolutely ripping off Plants style and vocal lines. Much akin to playing a riff that's note for note the same and calling it your own. They are very young... hopefully they find themselves but with the attention they get I can't see it happening. The whole, all press is good press applies... as I'm here commenting. :)

Kevin Shaffe When speaking about music or many forms of entertainment for that matter, original is not defined as note for note... Bands like Gun's 'n Roses, Metallica, Def Leppard, Faith No More, Poison, Pantera, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Nine Inch Nails, White Zombie, Marilyn Manson, Type O Negative, Green Day, Cypress Hill and Red Hot Chili Peppers were popular when I was a teen. @oneoveronethirtyseven91616 жыл бұрын
It's no secret that Zeppelin took material from other artists, but the result was something that sounded unique to them. That's not the case with GVF. To be honest I was really in to GVF for a little while after hearing Highway Tune on the radio and was pretty excited to hear their other stuff. So I put the few songs they had at the time in my playlist and enjoyed them for a few days, but before long I found myself skipping their songs every time they came on. I got bored with them after a dozen or so listens, and I realized that it was because it was just too much Led Zeppelin influence. I love Led Zeppelin but I've listened to them to death, so hearing a new band that sounded exactly like them was cool at first, but in the end I just started wishing GVF had some stuff that sounded more like "them" and less like Led Zeppelin. All that being said, I'm still going to check out their stuff as they release more. I think as time goes on they will blend their current style with more outside influences, and I think the result could be really cool.

Honestly I think the claims that they sound too much like Zeppelin are overplayed, the band does have their own unique sound and feel which on odd occasion may veer a little into Zeppelin territory, mostly on their more riff based songs. However I think this really comes down to the fact that they were influenced by the same kind of blues and folk acts that Zeppelin was being influenced by (and on occasion stealing from). So that occasional similarity is due to a common influence rather than imitation. Musically at least. In terms of Vocals, yeah Josh sounds quite a bit like Plant but I mean, that's just how his voice sounds, the kid can't help it, so, just leave him alone. Besides if it ain't broke don't fix it.

I avoided this reaction for awhile because I wasn't in the mood to listen to someone complain about comparisons and influences that are crisp and clear in the music.. but I was pleasantly surprises today when someone who calls himself a critic actually likes them for the reasons they are hated by many. My opinion? As long as they aren't copying lyrics or songs completely and aim to do their own thing with it, who the hell cares who they sound like. Robert Plants sound wasn't exclusive to him, people seem to forget that this is what a lot of rock sounded like back then, especially in the 70s. Robert took influences from other artists and bands just as they took influences from him. The fact that he can sing like that today is just pure talent. It's not as obvious in the recording, but when you see Josh Kiszka perform live you will instantly notice that singing in this way is not at all hard or a huge strain on his chords. He can naturally reach those notes and that pitch without damaging his vocal chords, because he was also trained by a really good voice coach that taught him how to properly care for his voice after these intense notes and belts. They also stated that they weren't even planning on the whole Led Zepplin sound alike type vibe, they had just wanted to be a rock band inspired by the music they grew up on not specifically Led Zepplin ( they also mentioned quite often being influenced by The doors and Aerosmith). Both Sam and Jake both said in an interview that although they knew Josh ( lead singer) could sing, they didn't know he could pull off that particular tone so easily. Their earlier stuff is very 70s rock, but generic to most rock back then-which I'm not saying is a bad thing or a criticism. They didn't have Plant in mind when releasing their first single, but, of course because of the coincidental vocal choices that's what many people think. Their later stuff though ( talking about their most recent album released in 2021), is where they REALLY started to find their sound and I believe now they've established something that is incredibly unique to them. Wonderfully, though, they still haven't lost that 70s vibe, still choosing to dress extravagantly for lives and videos and Josh never lost his Plant-esque tone. It's very obvious how much they've grown as a band there.

Personally I would like to see some more instrumental driven songs rather than their vocally driven ones. Like compare for example when the curtain falls and anthem. You will see what I mean. I just think that time is a major, considering their so young and just starting out.

You've got to hear them tell their story to fully appreciate that they basically mostly listened to this type of music due to their parents large vinyl collection of blues, 60's rock, motown, etc.

The way I see it is that they're clearly an amazing band, they all do their parts really well. However you can only do so much with the style they play so it gets old rather quick. It would be cool if they added something that was so distinctive that the second you hear a song, you know it's them.

Greta Van Fleet they are my favorite band when I first herd them in 2017, I stuck with them ever since then. Josh's vocals are so intriguing with a unique sound for this time. I heard a bit from their new album coming out already and they are already evolving past the Zeppelin comparisons. And although they have similarities still they hare becoming a hybrid of the 60-70s Rock N' Roll( GNR, Rush, Hendrix). What intrigues most about this band is this quote by Sam Kiska :"It's not like we set out to be a rock and roll band, it's just that sound that comes out [when] we get together and play."

I grew up a few miles away and have met them on many occasions. The youngest two graduated high school in 2017. They’re from a super touristy town called Frankenmuth. (It’s like German Epcot Center). The name came from a local who won an enormous quilt made by high school students where they played one of their first shows.

Age of Man is extremely underrated on their latest album. It’s long but very well put together.

I grew up on 60s rock and I can tell you right now this band has some serious skill. Just because the sound has been done before doesn’t change the fact that he pulls off those notes with ease. Music today doesn’t compare to what these guys are putting out. You’re entitled to your opinion but I didn’t feel as though you were that familiar with this genre of music.

I was born in their hometown and my sister went to high school with Danny and Sam. I’ve bumped into Danny a few times and seen them play at Fischer Hall at Auto Fest and Bavarian Fest.

The more you learn about Greta Van Fleet, the more you realize how genuine they are, and in a serious way are not copying... Although very inspired by the likes of Led Zeppelin, and Aerosmith and so in, but also more so by classic blues rock in general.

Gretna Van Fleet is an 80+ years old lady from their small hometown. The band invited her and a couple of her friends to a show, and thought they would get terrified. But they lovet it! ^_^

Omg let them send sound retro, we have enough "experimental" shit as it is. It's a great thing that good quality music is making a revival. Robert Plant loves em, so if he has no problem with them sounding like Led Zeppelin, you shouldn't either.

This band doesn't piss me off, they seem really talented and genuine, but they seem to get a lot of hype for "saving and "reviving" rock n roll, when... It doesn't really need saving? There have been good rock songs between the 70s and now.
@oneoveronethirtyseven91616 жыл бұрын
Yea I find it annoying when people say GVF are reviving rock. There's tons of excellent rock out there. GVF isn't reviving rock, they are just making people feel nostalgic by sounding exactly like a band that everyone loves from the 70s. That being said, I'm anticipating in what they put out in the future. I think eventually they will start to develop their own sound and I'm interested to hear that. They definitely are good at what they do.
@malone.j2936 жыл бұрын
They're retreading it, and they're doing an excellent job at that, but saying they're saving the genre implies that it was suffering to begin with, when really, classic rock and rock as a whole weren't in a bad place before they came along. I just find it disheartening that people are viewing them in this "Finally, some REAL music" light when they aren't really coming to save the day in terms of rock n' roll innovation.
@soullxsss6 жыл бұрын
its not really reviving because rock was at the top of the charts about a decade ago

If you've heard Led Zeppelin you've heard Greta Van Fleet. And that's coming from somebody who does like a few of their songs. I just feel like they really need to branch out.
@Ellthom6 жыл бұрын
Yea I just couldn't get into them, they sound like a tribute band rather than something original, and I have no problem with borrowing influences but there's borrowing influences and just plain copying it. As a huge Zepplin fan I could just listen to Zepplin I could listen to the Who, Queen, AC/DC, why do I need to listen to these, what do Greta van Fleet bring to the table thats different?
@TheGeorgeD136 жыл бұрын
They're all 21 and under. Very few bands in that age group are going to sound original. Give them time. Also, you can only listen to Zepplin's songs so many times. Sometimes you want to listen to new song with that sound and Greta Van Fleet provided that for me.
@Ellthom6 жыл бұрын
@@TheGeorgeD13 Oh I'll give them time of course, they have potential, I just don't think they got 'it' right now. But who knows, a few years down the line they might find their groove. I just don't think this band knows who or what it wants to be right now.

They are from a small town in east-central Michigan, Frankenmuth, a town of about 5,000. The last band to be this big out of that area was Grand Funk Railroad in the 70's, out of Flint. Gretna Van Fleet is a Town elder, the former drummer for the band, before Danny, had to go over and do some chores for her and suggested the name with only a little tweak, that being the first name from Gretna to Greta. My Girlfriend knows the drummers mom.

I first heard Safari song and that got me hooked. I loved the EPs they released and the covers they did. With the first LP, I didn't think I'd like most of the album songs. I liked all of them. Over the years, lots of the new bands always get compared to rock gods and people just rip on them because they finally have something they begged for and now it's not enough for them. I'd say congrats to them as they keep having sold out concerts and adding extra days due to high demand. They will keep growing, I'm sure of it
