I was expecting you to just meme on this album like everyone else, but this is actually one of your best reviews in quite a while. It was basically a video essay on the difference between artistic influence and artistic plagiarism and, ultimately, why artistic influence, even in great amounts, doesn’t negatively impact a record, so long as the artist puts their own spin on the style or branches off from it in some way, using GVF to exemplify your feelings on a broader point of discussion in music. I like that.

With art It’s really about the way a concept or (in music) a sound is presented which is most important. It’s what gives an artist their own style and makes them memorable. Stealing doesn’t allow you a lasting legacy.

Yeah, it was a good review, I think Anthony is just bothered by the idea of people enjoying stagnation. I'm a car guy, a good comparison of this would be people buying new recreations of old cars, some people just like that retro feel that you can't get anymore with modern twists and production applied. Of course if you're going to directly imitate Zeppelin, you'll be compared to their work directly, and is it any surprise that they don't stand up? Did The Melon really sit down and expect these guys to beat Zeppelin at their own game? Zeppelin's talent is what made them imitated in the first place.

@@aero0637 I definitely understand the 'retro feel' thing, I'm just as much of a junkie for it as the next person. Thing is, there are plenty of artists nailing the retro feel without totally ripping off specific artists. The Mystery Lights, King Gizzard, Tame Impala, War On Drugs, etc all sound like they could be recorded in a specific bygone era, but they all do something unique.

"..few artists stole, robbed and cheated their way to the top like Led Zeppelin did." I'm glad Fantano mentioned that, because the amount of people who deny this despite the mountain of proof readily available with the click of a finger is unfathomable. Zep was my fav band for many years and are still top 5, but you can't say they didn't rip off their favourite artists.

I don't think anyone at this point can argue against Led Zeppelin ripping off blues artists and Randy California, but not all of their songs were ripped off per se. I mean, you can't tell me that Achilles' Last Stand was a ripoff; hell as soon as you get past IV you'll be hard pressed to find unoriginal moments as the group got more experimental and progressive.

In my opinion it's been overdone since the 70s, and everybody into greta van fleet isn't really listening to the music that music critics do enjoy. I don't like Anthony Fantano at all for various reasons, but he and most music critics listen to more music than you or me put together because it's literally their job, and I can respect them being completely over the whole 70s loud guitar hard rock thing that has been going strong since the 60s. It's fine that you don't agree, it just means you're into the whole 70s rock revival and aren't interested in more modern stuff

To the boomers in the comments: Plenty of modern rock music has an old school feel to it without needing to essentially just be discount Led Zeppelin. The Oh Sees and King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard in particular lean hard on the '70s style acid/psych rock feel, but both have different approaches - The Oh Sees blend it with punk, KGLTW play into their weird songwriting. Then you've got bands like Samsara Blues Experiment, that lean further into the sort of prog-rock influences of bands like The Doors, King Crimson, and Moody Blues without copying those bands the same way GVF does with Zep.

Rival Sons being the most vintage I guess, Kaleo and Goodbye June have more modern touches, Vintage Trouble play some sofyer stuff, they are more soul and blues influenced rather than rock, but still, very good. Then if you seek "Hard Blues Rock" I don't actually know exactly what you mean by that but in my mind I would recommend these guys, Black Pistol Fire, Left Lane Cruiser, 20 Watt Tombstone, Black Keys earlier records, The Blackwater Fever, The Bonnevilles, Tyler Bryant & The Shakedowns, Black River Delta. Those bands are more focused on really dirty and muddy blues, lots of fuzz and distortion, many of them are just drums and guitar, (and vocals). So many other artists have been doing a better job at keeping rock alive/relevant AND managing to creatively push the genre’s boundaries in an innovative way, such as Jack White, St. Vincent, The National, Father John Misty, Ariel Pink, The War On Drugs, Kurt Vile, Courtney Barnett and Connan Mockasin. The vast majority of Greta Van Fleet fans seem to want to ignore all those talented people and instead want to idolize a mediocre classic rock revival band and act like they’re the second coming of Jesus Christ. I think you’ll find rock is not dying out, it’s just not popular because the majority of people are into 3 minute cheesy hip hop songs about drink, drugs, and sex. There are plenty of modern rock bands that have surfaced in recent years; Tyler Bryant & The Shakedown, Rival Sons, Snake Charmer, The Dust Coda, BlackBerry Smoke, The Cadillac Three, Greta Van Fleet... I could go on. Just because it’s not slapped in your face, doesn’t mean it’s still out there, you just have to look for it. For the record I’m 24 and can’t stand listening to the radio because it’s all the same trash. No vision, no direction, no imagery, no inspiration. Just samples and remixes left, right and centre. 🇬🇧

Extreme metal in all of its forms is currently, to some extent, what hard rock and prog rock were in terms of vitality and an exciting alternative to mainstream music. There are so many excellent extreme metal bands out there, and lots of creativity, innovation, hybrid styles/subgenres ... (despite of what some birds of bad omen constantly repeat about a supposed stagnation or death). For those who besides the rock of the 70's and the 80's "classic" heavy metal also like extreme metal, there's still a lot of excitement out there thanks to bands like Obscura, Beyond Creation, Barren Earth, Persefone, Ne Obliviscaris, Horrendous, Ruins of Beverast, Hooded Menace, Ulcerate, Voivod, Vektor, Power Trip, Yob, High on Fire, Tribulation, Moonsorrow, Deathspell Omega, etc etc ...

Khadijah Johnson exactly. I’ve said the same thing many times. Rock “died” because it stopped innovating. Arguably the last wave of rock bands that did something out of the ordinary were those Nu metal bands. Say what you want about them, but they were doing something different and they were hated for doing so. Since those bands fell out of favor with the mainstream, there has been no new innovative type of rock that has emerged. Therefore rock is “dead”.

You have good taste in music (minus GVF) but music can not REGRESS. Styles and new sounds music be created for music to progress forward. Same as Time is linear and in 1 direction, you cannot go backwards. GVF is an abomination to those whom have taken years to progress music rather than live in the past. And it’s the duty of artists to both: not plagiarize, & to create new art.

My biggest issue with GVF is that there are so many people who could have done what they do, copy the direct sound and style of a classic band, but didn't and don't. Throughout KZbin you can find so many talented vocalists who can perfectly emulate beloved acts, but they either directly cover them, make tribute bands, or try to make their own thing at most inspired by those musicians. Basically, numerous talented people before them had the opportunity to do this and decided not to take the easy route and pander to a specific tunnel visioned demographic

Big Bird but it’s not just the voice. Their riffs sound like a copy and paste of a zeppelin riff. I believe one comparison was Greta’s “highway tune” and zeppelins “the rover”. They don’t like them cause the music they make is uninspired and already been done many times and in every kind of way by loads of other bands.

I'm personally tired of these bands that come along every ten or so years where everyone goes "THEY SOUND LIKE LED ZEPPELIN! THEY'RE THE NEXT LED ZEPPELIN!" This shit has been repeated for the past 40 years now. We don't need "the next Led Zeppelin" or whatever people say. There'll never be another Led Zeppelin. Led Zeppelin was the 70s and strictly that. Bands that just tirelessly try to emulate that sound aren't exciting or even genre defining. The genre has been defined. By Led Zeppelin. People say rock and roll is dying or dead. Maybe it's because we're chasing something that happened more than 40 years ago. It doesn't need to be tried again every ten years. There's these guys. Wolfmother. Jack White (to a certain extent) you get the point. Hell, even when Rush made their debut on the radio, people mistakenly thought they sounded like new Led Zeppelin. Or at least Robert Plant. It didn't take Rush long to find their own sound though, however with these dick-riding bands every 10 years, they never innovate past that sound, they try to keep it going but the fact is we already have that music: listen to ACTUAL Led Zeppelin. Remember them? The original band that fit the era. Not some dick-riding band who's A&R guy is some greying baby boomer who got the nostalgia feels the first time he heard them covering a Led Zeppelin song. Enough of the "next Led Zeppelin" bullshit. It's tired, it's old, it's sort of insulting and that era is also gone. Create new rock gods, not try and rip off ones from 40 years ago.

Melon, you’re probably gonna take a lot of flack from Greta’s obnoxious fanbase for this review but personally I think it was totally spot on. Just my opinion but i think fans of GvF are largely in collective denial about the band’s generic & bland sound. I feel like close-minded hard rock elitists make up a fairly big portion of the fanbase and again imo, elitists are a huge reason why rock is in such a decline. Because they won’t give other subgenres of rock a chance and all they want is the same re-hashed sound over and over. Why would you not want to support your fellow rock acts? It’s all under the same umbrella after all. They seem to hate indie, alternative and other subgenres and instead just want to listen to watered-down nostalgia-pandering rock. In other words from my experience the fanbase seems very douchey. I do think GvF has potential and I understand they’re just getting their start but come on, people are grossly overrating this band. *Oops typed the same thing twice by accident

Have you considered that the problem is that those people just don't like that sound at all. I'm 23 and often have to turn myself to older music or heavy metal because most alternative rock has no edge or testosterone at all or it's overproduced/computer heavy for me or most of my friends to enjoy. Rock isn't fading because fans are being elitist it's fading because it's forgotten it's core demographic. That those mean that all those subgenres dont have a place it just means that if rock wants to survive it needs its balls back in some way.
