I saw them last night in Sydney, Australia. They are the real deal. Has this ‘Fanta Man’ clown been to a Greta Van Fleet show? If you want a live Zeppelin reference, try “tight but loose”. The main talking point among GVF fans that I’ve seen online is ‘it’s not mumble rap, I’ll take it any day over hip hop/pop shit any day lol’ - like come on people, there’s more music and creativity around these days than ever before, ya just gotta make the effort to find it - beyond a radio, that is. It’s really sad to see so many willing to accept such a blatant rehash and admit to not giving a fuck simply because it’s not mumble rap or pop. What low standards, smh. Like fine, don’t listen to pop that’s understandable, but how about at least making an effort to stay in touch with the very large amount of underground, original rock releases coming out. Have played in rock bands infinite times more than I’ve rapped, but I still absolutely love the genres of both hip hop and rock, and there’s amazing new stuff coming out all the time (mixed in with a sea of absolute shite, like any widely followed genre these days obvs) that actually pushes the boundaries instead of playing it as safe as GVF do And I’m not 100% that GVF are necessarily playing it safe, but they look super limited by the narrow genre of bands they are reinterpreting, so I really really hope they can evolve their sound beyond this, they have the talent to.

Agree with this assessment. I like this band and their dedication to the genre and was hoping for a salient performance on SNL, but: 1) Josh's vocals needed a boost and he really needed to put more into the frontman role. It seemed like he could care less and he's the centerpiece of the band. 2) The guitar player did his job but he drowned out the vocalist which sucked. Also, he could have cut back on all the physical prancing. A little is cool but he overshadowed the singer here, too. Dial it back a little and just focus on those great guitar riffs, friend. 3) The miking of the drumsets resulted in that sophomoric crappy drum sound you hear in nameless bands at a theme park. I hate that. The drummer played fine but the band really needed a full, premium drum sound to save that set and they didn't get it. 4) Kudos to the bass player. He did his job. Better sound engineering and a little choreographical redirection could have made a huge difference but it just wasn't there. I guess we'll have to see what's next for GVF. Perhaps a regular live concert environment with a full setlist is a better hand for them to play. They're young and talented, I expect them to be around for a long time.

@Ryan Swanzey Absolutely right! No one in the history of music has dared copy the music of other great artists. Zeppelin lived in a great bubble and never listened to anything before miraculously coming up with their completely original sound. The 33 plus cover songs they recorded were not really covers...they actually wrote them and recorded them before anyone else, but chose to release them belatedly. They were precient that way. Damn GVF...they have sinned like no group before them. They must be flogged, burnt at the stake and then vivisected. No record must be left of their unique and grievous posing.

Personally, I think that the band themselves did a good job for the most part, though the movement wasn't really timed well with the music. The thing that made the performance seem bad for me was the poor mixing of sound and awful stage lighting. If Sam's bass ends up louder than Josh's voice then the entire sound of the band is messed up, because the instrumentals are usually centered around Josh's thunderous voice. As for the stage, it is very difficult for a rock band to look cool on a stage lit like it's an 8th-grade talent show. That's just my two cents.

I also dislike the comparisons to Zeppelin I even coming from Plant himself. That album has great arrangements on it. Despite the controversy over where many of the songs originally came from, the writing and performances on that album are incredible for any band’s first album. The fact that GVF can’t even come close to an album made over 40 years shows their mediocrity. They don’t have anywhere near the range of songs present on Zeppelin I. I honestly think a better comparison for GVF’s sound is Zeppelin IV but without the talent or creativity.

And speaking of "dangerous" rock hasnt been edgy since the emergence of punk in the 70s Lol! I think a lot of its simply a generational thing. When Rockn Roll developed out of Blues the children of the baby boomers were trying to separate themselves from their parents generation and music was one of,.if not their most powerful tool. As those people grew up and took over society after their parents the music became mainstream and lost its edge. I would be curious as to what an average middle class, white 20 year old male in America or any developed nation would have to rebel against?

Not to beat a dead horse, but if you really listen to Zep's The Song Remains the Same, you will hear a lot of slop and misplayed notes. Personally, I think that actually makes it more dynamic. The fact that it is live and a little on the raw side. It's interesting that the reviewer calls Zepplin's rough performance "bravado" but GvF's performance sloppy. I am not sure what the distinction is outside of overall quality of the songs. As for SNL's history of performers you have to realize that the crowd is closer to a theatre crowd than a concert crowd. Younger bands will have a bigger problem with this kinda thing. Cold start, lukewarm crowd. No big deal. Since I have written this much, I will include one more point. I am in my mid 50's, and have kids older than this band, the reason I bring this up is because, all my kids like the Zepplin I forced on them(it's dad's stereo), but never identified with Zep like I did, to them it was never a "breath of fresh rock and roll air" to them. It was probably stuff that dad was playing too loud. So while the band should be flattered to be compared to Zepplin, I can understand if they dont hold them in as high esteem or are bored with the comparison as someone who listened to Zep when they were just a rock band, as opposed to classic rock icons. Different perspective. So to the reviewer, I will close with this, as a self proclaimed music nerd you should know that ANY live performance is going to be rawer and most times, faster than the studio record. The only band I have ever seen that played EXACTLY like the studio recordings was ZZTop. If anyone made it this far...thanks for reading...this is what happens when you cannot mentally edit.

@GermanProudly 5 жыл бұрын
Great points, Steve. Actually, the sloppy performance you hear on "The. Song Remains the Same" is some of Zeppelin's BEST playing live. They were often far worse than that. The SNL show is no big deal, because in the bigger picture, GVF has a video recorded record of doing one great live show after another. Their detractors should go see a full live show before commenting. These kids are really pretty fuc$ing amazing live - especially when compared to how poorly bands like Zeppelin used to play live. Don't even get me started on how badly Aerosmith used to play live - especially when they were young.

@@finismalorum9746 There is no question that this is one of the great live performances that Zeppelin gave. They were great up until around 1972 when Plant blew out his voice and Page descended into a stoned stupor. However, from 72 on, this band was very spotty live. BTW, GVF hasn't been in a position to be this creative live. No one had seen anything like this in nearly 50 years. It is a psychedelic head trip just watching this sober, let alone in the state of mind most people originally saw it live. Audiences today are not so open minded...or so stoned!

GermanProudly That is the problem, I don’t think Greta Van Fleet will be allowed to be creative. In my opinion; They are young. They were very clearly stressed on SNL. Most of their other performances that you can watch online sound much, much better. People keep referring to music they made years ago and crucify them for it. I think they're making progress, moving away from the Led Zep sound slowly but surely, judging by some of the songs on the new album. Maybe if people were critical without being hateful, we could have a young band of talented musicians do something great.
@amostlyreasonableguy
@amostlyreasonableguy 5 жыл бұрын
Adrien Goder but there's nothing hateful about stating the obvious that the singer is completely impersonating every nuance of Robert Plant's voice as much as humanly possible, even on their newest material like "When the curtain falls." There's a lack of integrity in it, and for the rest of the band to go on writing instrumentals that sound reminiscent of old Led Zeppelin songs while having a singer that's essentially impersonating Robert plant's every vocal nuance. It's not just wearing influences on your sleeve as a young band it's something a lot more shady and calculated than that. If you listen to the first minute and three seconds of "Highway tune" it hits you in the face like a hammer that this is not just influence but an outright impersonation. Other bands are influenced by classic rock but don't end up sounding like they're impersonating someone. We should be giving credit and attention to bands that are inspired by classic rock and sound awesome while actually doing their own thing in their own style. Check out the band Rival Sons. They've been on my radar since 2011 and they're freaking awesome. "Pressure and Time" and "Open My Eyes" are good tracks to check out, and they have a new album coming out soon too. They are the kind of band that should be getting this attention and going on things like Saturday night live. GVF has this kind of prominence precisely because they sound just like Led Zeppelin not just because they're a solid rock band influenced by the classics that people like. They have a specific gimmick and it's what's catapulted them to this level of exposure.

@@amostlyreasonableguy A Mostly Reasonable Guy I also enjoy Rival Sons. They've dropped a new album recently that I haven't checked out yet. The people who point out the gimmicky resemblance to Led Zep are not wrong. I agree with you. GvF themselves have recently admitted they were very influenced by Led Zep. I just think that while it is true, we shouldn't crucify them just yet. Give them some time to develop their sound. To mature a bit. I understand that not all criticism of the band is hateful. I was referring to some of the comments about the singer being an 'ugly hobbit' and the band being talentless. That's not criticism, it's being hateful towards something you don't like. For a bunch of 20 year olds, they're pretty good with their instruments. They've inspired me to pick up a guitar and learn, because I'm as old as them and they made me realize I wasn't too young to try. Yes, I know, there's a specific part in Rover that sounds nearly exactly like the riff to Highway tune. But I still really enjoy what they've done with this song; it wasn't a disgusting, blatant rip-off. Although that's my opinion obviously. I hope that with future music they'll experiment a lot more.

In my opinion, i feel like rock/metal today is dead and fucked cus we got bands who cant create original sounds. The last known original era of rock and metal was when nu metal came in. Bands experimented with different sounds pushing and evolving the sounds we still hear today. When have we ever said hey i like this one band cus they sound like that other band? Never. Cus no one likes unoriginal sounds where people blatantly regurgitate a sound from someone else. Its copying and it lessens the value of their craft by a shit tone. Copycat bands are too prevalent today. This is why we have had no big bands for the last decade.

Those same people who like stuff thats trying to be original are the same people who don't like Greta van fleet and point out how uninspired they are, the mainstream is continuing to eat them up more and more, so I can't say I've seen this way that the fans are killing its mainstream chance, the fans just don't want Led Zepplin 2 electric boogalo

All bands from that era had tons of performances where they don't sound like the album. Older Rock bands and these guys were never about sounding perfect live! On “their popularity will continue to baffle me,” I have some answers. 1. My 15 year old is a fan who likes the unique overall sound. Unique to a pre-teen pop fan who also loves Queen. 2. Male sopranos are rarer and rarer. So it’s interesting to hear one now days. I would argue System of a Down singer is THE reason they made it. 3. This resurrection of first gen metal is unexpected and interesting. 4. The novelty of such young players appeals to their young listeners. 5. Old Zep fans want there to be new Zep songs; and this is as close to Zep as we have gotten in recent years. HOWEVER, these kids better make up better riffs(Zep) and more interesting melodies(Dream Theater) faster than immediately. If their next album isn’t as powerful as Zep II, Killer Queen, or supertramp they need to make changes. Final note. If this sound can make a resurgence, then why not Joy Division-type of band reboot. Black Sabbath? Stray Cats?

Lionell Andrews in the meantime support bands that are influenced by the greats without copying every nuance of a lead singer like GVF does. Give the attention and support to bands that actually rock without impersonating someone else. Rival Sons are one of those bands. Look up "pressure and time" or "open my eyes" if you want good rock music that's inspired by what came before it while still being its own thing.
