Slander and libel require proof of falsehood and proof of malicious intent in the United States and the burden of proof is on the plaintiff. They're notoriously difficult to win in the US for that reason. I'm guessing such a case would probably be very difficult to make in this case unless someone finds some evidence that the author intended to defame him.
