@@lyndoncmp5751 negative. They did copy several blues artists. Some later attributions were made either voluntarily or by lawsuits. Lemon Song is nearly a direct copy of Killin' Floor by Howlin' Wolf and Zep lost a lawsuit in the early 70s. There are several other examples.
@lyndoncmp5751 Жыл бұрын
@@tylersmith9418 Incorrect. 1. Led Zeppelin have NEVER lost any lawsuit. They never even fought against or argued again the Dixon and Wolf claims. They owned up to those cases and paid up right away. The only case they actually fought was the Spirit one. They took that to court and rightly won it. Twice. 2. I repeat, they didn't 'copy' anyone. They put their own identity into literally everything they took. Zeppelin actually used to introduce The Lemon Song as Killing Floor when they were playing it live in 1969. However the Lemon Song recorded for Led Zeppelin II is very different to the Wolf song. It is most definitely not a 'copy'. Not if you listen to the Wolf version that came out in the 1960s. Wolf later re-recorded it in England in 1970. Ironically that version has the funk and groove similar to Zeppelin's The Lemon Song. At the time Wolf was re-recording Killing Floor in England, Led Zeppelin II was the number one selling album in both the UK and USA. 3. Nope. No other examples of Zeppelin copying. When they did an out and out cover, they credited the source. Such as the two Dixon covers on the first album. Zeppelin fully credited Dixon for those right from the beginning.

Covers or not, influenced by aside, Zep sounded like Zep from day one. GVF sounds like Zep from day one to this day and age. They're good musicians, they should come up with their own sound and leave the comfort zone/sound of being like the bands they're influenced by. But nope, this kids have talent, but aint got that pedigree. Zep had that pedigree, thats why their renditions and blatant covers are reveered. Almost every 70s act had it, and they ve all did covers, so what???!!!! But don't forget, the thing we're fed up about, the very thing that makes us, fans of rock and roll, knock GVF for is not having the balls to say something unique, musically, and sounding too Zep-ish for their own good. But again, in this market, this kind of outside debate seems benefficial since there aint bad publicity. So, why quit the formula that works? Then fine! Do it, but we all know this is a massive gimmick, so don't come defending something that doesnt have the courage to morph into something unique, while milking it ad nauseaum with a straight face.

That's an unfair comparison for sure because it's a bunch of teenagers compared to one of the greatest records of all time but it's a comparison they invite. @@ThatLonesomeLecherousLeech Hi Lech! I am part of the younger generation (i.e 18-24) that grew up in a house full of rock. I’m confused when you say that GVF’s music should be “rebellious” and “ground breaking”. Does everyone have the same definition of ‘rebellious’ and ‘groundbreaking’? I don’t think so. Based on their most recent album (the battle at gardens gate), I think the abstract, larger message of this album is addressing the human condition. That, to me, is groundbreaking. Times are changing and the human condition is decreasing, something my generation will have to face head on someday, now even. Of course not everyone may see their album this way, but I definitely wouldn’t say it’s anything passive. I think this album is tender yet powerful, something that my generation could use. Especially in a day where unnecessarily vulgar rap and pop is extremely dominant. I think GVF is refreshing and (yeah, I’ll say it lol) reinventing classic rock to bring it to the modern day for people in my generation. Love them.

GVF just don't seem to have their own identity, even with the change in direction. it's okay to draw inspiration, even heavy inspiration, from old music. hell, led zeppelin were drawing inspiration from music that was all 20+ years old at the time. but the way zeppelin did it was unique to them. GVF just copies certain aspects of the songwriting without actually capturing what made the originals magic. it's like... a few steps above watching train cover led zeppelin. i can enjoy watching a GVF show but it really pales compared to the material they are basing themselves on.

Years later I went and got my CDL and became a truck driver. Been in every continental U.S. state. Now I have combined the two and became a tour truck driver. Based out of Nashville. In a few days I start a 3 month tour with Greta Van Fleet. Looks like I'll be hauling their video. Even though I have heard of them, I really haven't heard any of their music. I fully understand the critisisms and the need for originality. On the other hand the main reason that I liked Greta Van Fleet AND the Darkness when I first heard them, was that they were bringing back the vibe of a particular kind of hard rock that was killed by grunge when I was just a teen. Record companies wanted the next Nirvana and suddenly high vocals, elaborate guitar solos and theatricality were out of the window. By the late 90's came a wave of brit pop where everybody sounded like a cat meowing under a constant ''nianianianiania'' guitar scratching. Then by early to mid 00's everybody sounded like rejects from a Korn/Limp Bizkit audience. The original hard rock sound was gone and surprisigly to the record company big cheeses, alot of people out there missed it. Not only ''old'' people, but also younger ones that never had the chance to experience it without feeling like necromancers or archaeologists.
@UnchainedEruption3 жыл бұрын
I gotta disagree. Sure you can’t see a lot of the greats live, but you can still get a feel for the live shows from recordings of them posted on KZbin. I got into rock just a few years ago in college, and I sure as hell didn’t feel like an archaeologist; quite the contrary. It’s all new to me, because for me it was happening for the first time. I had the same sense of discovery and wonder as a kid hearing a forbidden record play on the turntable in the 70s. It was actually harder coming to terms with the fact that those young heroes are actually senior citizens nowadays or just outright dead (I still try not to dwell on that). It’s one thing to be more 70s/80s-inspired. I’m totally down with that. It’s entirely another to be a soulless carbon copy of one very specific mega-star group of the era. Ask yourself this, would you be giving them a pass if they had actually come out in the 70s? It was a great time for rock/heavy metal, and you had TONS of diverse sounds. Even if you dig through the hundreds of now obscure/forgotten rock bands of the decade, I think you will be very hard pressed to find even a single recording that sounds as similar to the Zep as GVF do. (Not that plagiarism in company is plagiarism justified. It’d still be wrong, regardless.)

Some if these reactions seem to be reacting more to the fan base than the band. They def are evolving. Battle at Garden's Gate shows a lot of growth in finding their own sound. Sam, the bass player knows he's not as up to par with rhe rest, but he's closing in quickly as he experiments and learns. I'm over the narrative they are a tribute band. I see loads of potential from these kids and it's exciting to see Rock n Roll in the mainstream again. Keep your eyes on these guys. They come from a musical family, and may be harkening back to Led Zep's influences (blues) more so than LZ itself. Counter Tenors are rare and iften sound quite similar.

I had a feeling that they bit hard on to Zeppelin for familiarity sake that is leading them to sustainable popularity. The 2nd record shows their departure from the derivative and a style more authentic to themselves. When you’re as young as they are, they have not lived enough life yet.
@wintersherry98673 жыл бұрын
Yes, their former original manager, who found them in a neighbor's garage in 2012, announced their sound exactly like LZ, he encouraged them to sound that way and promoted them under that flag to attract attention to them. However, they wrote about 30-40 songs before signing to the label, and many of those songs still sounded in their own style. Point to another group of teens who created something similar in high school. Now relax

Love your program. This was especially good. I like Greta Van Fleet. I hope they continue to develop and listen to what you have said in this installment. With how much music has been written and recorded, it is nearly impossible to not repeat some of what others have done. We do need to pursue it with our passion, love and devotion. Wherever it lands from there...so be it. Stay awesome Justin.

One thing that drives me nuts is everyone does their critique based on Highway Tune. I can guarantee if anyone watched the full live performances, Red Rock Ampitheatre for example. you hear only one thing and that is a great band who are tight and are actually unique. They were drawn to music from a young age and had access to a huge array of styles. Clothes were at tbe suggestion of Elton John. And GVF have fun with it.

Don't get me wrong I understand your doing a critique and therfore have to mention these kind of things. But for me it's never been a problem they sound like Led Zep, I mean at what point do we just say, this is good music. I doubt they have a template or formulae they're following purposely, I imagine it's just comes out that way naturally. And it comes out how it comes out, otherwise then it really is contrived!?? In this current wave of music we have these days, anyone putting out rock n roll like this, I support!

I love the Darkness but my favourite all time band is Led Zep. I have seen Page and Plant and Robert Plant as a solo artist many times, lucky to have met him once. GVF are great, the comparisons are inevitable but hearing Josh’s voice soar is just phenomenal. Yes there’s Queen, Aerosmith and definitely Geddy Lee in there but ultimately there’s Josh and it’s exciting. If Robert Plant isOK with it, then who are we to disagree 😉

Based on how Battle at the Garden Gates went, I believe that GVF will go the way of Rush over time. We are starting to see longer epics, and Rush also started as a Led Zeppelin cover band.

@0909shaggy3 жыл бұрын
@@waltersobchak8080 well Rush's second album is far from derivative of Zeppelin, thanks mostly in part to Peart joining the band and taking over songwriting duty. My point with GVF, and if you like them fine I'm not here to change your taste, is they simply lack the chops to be compared to a band like Rush. Anyone with ears can hear the inklings of explosive musical technicality even on their debut, with GVF it's a whole lot of riffs, structures and lyrics we've been hearing for 50+ years (time also hasn't done then many favors). Time will tell, I just think it's a poor comparison.

I was introduced to GVF by Laurie in 2017, and you’re right - their immediate appeal was “Wow, this guy’s voice is insane - and hey! They sound like Led Zepp!” which meant their first album was in rotation for a bit, but then it lost its uniqueness a bit. Their more recent stuff has definitely progressed, which I think will do them good in the long run. For bands that you haven’t listened to much of, I’d actually be really interested in seeing you make your critique as you listen to their latest album or single and get a sort of ‘live reaction’ to the music.

Others have mentioned the obvious Rush influence, and this is something I've thought all along. There is a huge nod to Rush not just in their musical styles but their lyrical content as well, going all the way back to their first EP. They've always sung about things like politics or climate issues, and they wrap it in mystical, mythical lyric imagery. I would almost categorize GVF as something of a new era of progressive rock. These guys are what rock should be: loud, grandiose (in a good way), and fun as hell. I saw them in Chicago a few months ago for my 40th bday. They sound fantastic live and put on a phenomenal show. I'm going to see them on back-to-back shows in Madison & Green Bay in a couple months. Money well spent, if you ask me 😁😁😁
