This is a useful technique that is not often shown. One thing that disturbed me about this video is when Gretchen starts sewing, she doesn't hold the loose thread ends that are coming from the needle and bobbin. This stops the fabric being dragged into the needleplate hole.I believe it's an essential step that is usually taught to new sewers.

This is great, Gretchen, thank you. I have made lapped, french and rolled seams and practice really does help with this technique,, your tips made a lot of sense. Clipping while sewing is a great idea. I appreciate your taking the time to share, thanks for a great video.

To stop sheer fabrics being "sucked into the needle hole" at the start of a seam, it's very helpful to sew off a scrap of fabric butted up to the fashion fabric you're actually using. This keeps the threads taut and prevents some bunching headaches.

I also keep tissue paper-like what we use for inserting into little gift bags- handy for the same purpose. The tissue pulls out very easily.

Can also hold the thread tails and pull them slightly.

Thank you so much for this video. I am a complete newbie sewer and I successfully used this method to sew a nylon mesh shirt. Gorgeous seams, and I only needed two passes (three on my test piece was unnecessary) for a beautiful secure seam. My costume will look so much better than my actual skill level--thank you :-D

I heard what the principle was and thought "Like a modern variation on the mantua maker's seam!" Mantua maker's seam is a historical, handsewing take on the same principle, i.e. sewing a seam on sheers like a hem but in two layers of fabric (except that it's a handsewn rolled hem rather than hairline in that case - handsewing is labour intensive enough as it is!). Thank you very much for sharing this technique.

thank you for demonstrating. brilliant technique. i'm formerly experienced but out of practice and i need a chiffon blouse :-) it's all cut but i was afraid to start stitching because my french seam trials were a flop. this is so easy. helps to have a pfaff dual feed

A sewing video that is actually helpful! Excellent video, great explanation

The camera shots don't really show this off very well, but I understand this technique is basically like a rolled hem, except it is used as a seam instead of an edge finish for a single layer. (Also obviously not using a rolled hem foot, but doing it the traditional way.) I can see why this would produce a very slim and functional seam capable of holding a curve. Nice tip about the curved scissors and clipping into the seam allowance while creating the second line of stitching! I will use that.

I like this technique! Wish I had found you sooner, I coud not get use to the rolled hem attachment on my machine and hemmed my daughters dress with 2 passes not the three. Glad I found you, will continue to follow.

Brilliant! I would have used a French seam but this technique is far better. I don't sew that kind of fabric very often but when I do I will certainly use the hairline seam. Some have commented on not being able to see the seam properly but I think enough was shown to know what was going on though I would have liked to see the pressed seam afterwards.

I would recommend the Brother Project Runway model. The NS40. It is easy and fun to use with lots of features found on more expensive machines.

I am about to sew a sweetheart blouse for the first time with sheer fabric. I shall certainly try this method so fingers crossed I do a good job as my fabric is so pretty. I was hoping to use my serger but it seems not the best thing to use. Anyway thank you for a great vid.

Thank you for the video. I believe I will be trying this method. The one thing that worries me about this method is that you begin stitching not on the exact seam line and the subsequent stitching is not marked in any way to ensure that the final seam line is exactly where it should be. Would this not cause problems, especially it time had been taken to get a perfect fit?

OK this is the second video I've ever disliked. I am not blaming this on the person sewing but on the camera person. I'm not familiar with the technique she using and there was NO attempt on zooming in to show what this hairline seam is supposed to look like after the second row of stitching or after the last row of stitching. I'd love to try this, but I probably won't until I see what I'm actually trying to do.
