I just got Gertie sews Jiffy Dresses book for Christmas, and love the fact that the first few dresses are so simple to sew (no zips or buttons). My wife and daughter have already put their orders in for a couple of popover dresses that they will wear for our next big bash party (50's theme). i just need Gertie to do a man's pattern book for the 50's, and I'm all set. My goal is to do the boatneck dress as a sewing practice, as zippers are my nemesis. Happy sewing.

Just a tip for the flare of the dress. When I was a little girl in 1961, my mother had a several dresses made for me to go on a 6 week cruise with her. The dresses were all full at the waist like this cute little dress. The fullness of the skirt was sewn in (a gathered waist) as opposed to needing a belt. I had a 'rope' petticoat for all of my dresses. I think it was an elastic waist, but could have had a waistband with a hook and eye. It had a few rows of channels going around the petticoat skirt, and the rope was sewn into the skirt as the channels were made, similar to making piping only just sewn into the fabric of the skirt. It would be easiest to use the zipper foot on your sewing machine and sew the rope into the fabric before sewing the 2 sides together. It's easy to stitch the channels just by turning up enough of the petticoat fabric on the inside. It's just like sewing them as you would to make your own piping but you won't have any raw edges until the side seam but leave enough of the sides without rope to sew the side seam. You can either sew a French seam (which is a favourite way of mine for seams) at the side for neatness, or just sew the seam the same way as the side seams on the dress. At 68, I'm still smiling as though I'm seeing that petticoat hanging in my wardrobe 60 yeard ago! I adored wearing my beautiful dresses, but my rope petticoat is something that has remained so special in my heart. When I get to make this dress, I'll certainly be making myself a rope petticoat to wear with it! You can just make one with a soft cord to wear with any of your gathered skirts for that extra little bit of fullness. You can use whatever type of rope/cord you like depending upon how much you want your dress to flair out. There are plenty to choose from at your local fabric store. You get to choose however many rows of ropes you want in your petticoat, but I vaguely remember that mine had about 3 rows of rope and I was 8 at the time. The type of cord you'll want will depend on how full you want your dress/skirt to be. Remember to ensure that it won't take forever to dry. If you're uncertain, I'd suggest buying a few small pieces of rope of different thicknesses and stiffnesses and see how full you want your dress or skirt to be, and how long it will take for the cord to dry, because I promise you that you'll want to wear your petticoat often and with more than one dress or skirt. If you're not already loving wearing gathered waisted clothing, you will after the first time you wear your petticoat! I still remember the wonderful feeling I had every time I got to wear that petticoat and even 60 years later, that feeling still makes me smile whenever I even think of seeing it hanging in my wardrobe, let alone wearing it. I could hardly wait to go on that cruise just so that I could wear my petticoat! I'm now thinking about making one for my granddaughter. I should have made one for her when I made her tutu a couple of years ago instead of making 20 layers of tulle! lol My petticoat was made of a soft white cotton and it was also starched when ironed. If you sew it for a granddaughter, put a deep hem on it, and make buttons and buttonholes on the elastic for a little girl, so that it can then grow with her. :)

The bottom line is how well does the dress look, when worn. There's more than one way to sew a dress, just choose a method that works for you. For example, I have a serger, so tend to serge all my seams before I start to sew the garment, but sew it together with me sewing machine. My sewing buddy sews her garments together with the serger, cutting down the time it takes her to make a garment. We both end up with well finished garments, but sewn with a completely different technique. Happy sewing.

I bought the pdf version of the book and the patterns need to be downloaded from the publishers website There’s no size of paper anywhere on the pattern. I’ve tried comparing it to a previous pattern from the books, but not sure how accurate that is If I print it in Australia, should I print size A0 paper at ‘fit to size’ or ‘100%’ Love the colors and the way pattern and most importantly the videos!
@GertiesWorld5 жыл бұрын
I know, I’m sorry about that! I actually had no idea my publisher was releasing the patterns in a pdf format so I’ve been working with them to make it more user friendly. Here is what you need to do: 1. Open the link you receive. 2. Open the pattern page and save it to your computer as a pdf. (You will need the free software Acrobat Reader, which you need for any PDF patterns). 3. You can then print the file full size at a copy shop or online printing service like pdfplotting.com. Specifiy A0 sheets or 36" wide paper (the pattern pages are 27.2 x 38" for reference). It is 10 pages. Hope that helps!

@@Alcwathwen It worked out fine. There's plenty of easy in the pattern, and it caters for a larger bust as well. I ended up doing one mockup, which fitted fine. As there's no zipper or button holes to do, the dress itself is easy to sew. I did lengthen the pattern, as my wife wanted a 50's style dress that went mid calf. This did use a lot more fabric, but was worth it.

Hi. I made this dress and I like it but I have to much length in the back because I’m short waisted. Even though this dress is gathered with a belt you can tell there is too much length there. I don’t see a line in the pattern for shortening. Can I shorten the pattern by the waist? I would like to make the dress again in better fabric and do version with the elastic sheering at the waist but I’m worried it’ll be too long back there again. I haven’t been sewing for a long time, thanks in advance for any advice.😊
@GertiesWorld4 жыл бұрын
Yes you can shorten at the waist or right above the waist. If you only have too much length in the back of the dress you may want to do a "sway back adjustment." If you google that term you'll see a couple nice ways to do a sway back adjustment to your pattern.

Bethanie Blakeborough 4 months late, but here's what I do to alter a bodice. If it's a couple of inches too large, resew with 1" seams instead of 5/8". Darts are also good for removing material from slightly too big bodices. Shoulder straps can be shorted my French seaming the shoulder seam. If the bust area is too big, a princess seam will remove fabric, but maintain the fabric needed to accommodate the bust. FYI I hire out costumes, so am always having to alter existing garments to fit the wearer. Happy sewing.

I ironed it on to the neckline then realized it was not right. It has left a thick shiny film so I stopped right there, went to my craft store again but they they were out of stock of all interfacing. Im very new to this and am unsure if I can machine sew through it? or if when I do manage to get the correct stuff that it will iron on to the first product? I don't have enough fabric to cut a new piece. Any ideas or suggestions for this newbie sewer ?!!

Good tutorial But one thing on marking the fabric in visible ink for us to see on a video. I use childrens washable markers on all of my lighter coloured fabrics that I sew. Markings from childrens washable markers do not disappear and can be seen on video. The washable marker from Spotlight here in Australia - did not work at all when using it on fabric. Childrens washable markers are so cheap from Kmart and are available in fine tip or thicker tip. I use fine tip in my garment making.

First, don't forget that you have to wash/dry your fabric (most of which is hung dry) . You have to also factor in the time to trace the pattern onto your own desired tracing paper; then cut your fabric (both tracing and cutting can take up to 3 or 4 hours depending on your chosen fabric) ; Then serge or overlock the raw edges; cut out and iron on the interfacing; THEN you can sew the entire thing in a short time.. Oh wait. Did you want to do the shirring option? Then add more time. This is a weekend project, meaning you won't be doing anything else but this. But It is still fun! Just not done in 2 hours.

Glad you enjoyed it! Everyone sews at different paces and skill levels, but I think a whole weekend would be a lot for this project. And yes, the shirring would be more time but this video doesn’t refer to that version. :) In any case, I always say enjoying the process is more important than sewing as fast as possible. Happy dressmaking!

@@GertiesWorld Thank you for all of this. You have inspired me and so many others. Do you think that you could do a Part 3 for shirring this dress? I would love to see how you do it. - visual learner here.

I agree. The SECOND dress could be sewn in 2 hours as you already have the pattern traced and cut out, and experience of how the pieces go together. The first dress always takes longer. Happy sewing.

Mom and I really enjoy watching you eew, but I'm sitting here listening to my mom's commentary. She's wondering why you did the armholes After sewing the side seems. She says the armholes and even sleeves are much easier if you attach the sleeve and the sew up the sleeve and down the side. She always starts at the top of the shoulder when pinning.

Sewing sleeves in the round wear better over time. However you can always sew them in flat if you find this to be easier.

Did she just say her own pattern is a bit confusing?

Spending a lot of time listening to feedback on my work on social media gives me a sense of what people need help with! So I created this video to make things easier for people. And yes sometimes people find things confusing. That’s why we have videos! Did you have any other questions I can help you with? Have a nice day!

The patterns in her books, and this book and this pattern in particular, are geared toward absolute beginners. I am not a beginner and I didn't have trouble with the book pattern. I can imagine a beginner might be confused and might need more explanation. A video demonstration is incredibly useful in explaining new techniques. If you don't like it, or her, or whatever your issue is, turn the video off.

@@johnaschneider6614 Where did you read that I didn't like it? If SHE'S saying bits are confusing I know I'M going to find it confusing....please dont try starting trouble or being condescending. Her channel is not the place for your issues.

@@mobranch3678 I'm not trying to start anything. Your comment came off as very condescending. I apologise if you didn't mean it that way, but from the way that she responded and the way that others responded, I don't think I'm alone in thinking that. She said that they might be confusing for several reasons. Written sewing patterns are an attempt to describe a three dimensional process in words. It's not possible to do this in a way that everyone who reads it will understand right away. This is why she's making videos. Additionally, she's aiming this book and these patterns at complete beginners while still making them worthwhile for more experienced sewers to use. A complete beginner might very well be confused by the cut on facings and pocket construction on this dress, even after having read the book. Many beginners take classes to learn to sew. The videos are to help lessen beginner confusion. I'm sure you'll be just fine when trying the pattern. Learning to sew is about being confused and learning from it. It's not a bad thing.

Mo Branch hopefully you also heard the part where I say I’m going to show you a really simple way to do the potentially confusing part so it’s super easy even for beginners :)
