As women increasingly stepped into traditional male roles, this added a feminine twist. Figure-hugging tops as well as daytime fashions influenced by traditional menswear were in every girl’s wardrobe. Sewing expert Gretchen Hirsch will make a trendy blouse that buttons up the back on Its Sew Easy.

If you put the same extention on both sides, fold both side in the same amount and then overlap it, isn't the blouse then smaller as it should be? In my understanding you reducing the width of the back....

I have the same reservations. The waist buttons are the ones that are the most problematic for getting dressed. They cover the narrowest part of the body, you have to undo them ...
