For anyone interested and to clear up any confusion, here is the full rundown of the controls for the Gretsch Custom Shop Masterbuilt G6136-T: We have a pickup selector switch, tone switch, neck pickup control switch & bridge pickup control switch. For the neck & bridge control switch, the down position is a coil split, middle is normal humbucker mode and up is the dynamic pickup control option (outside Coil is on, inside coil is sent to their respective pickup control blend).

I think two of those switches related to Gretsch's system for "coil splitting." Instead of splitting a humbucker into a SC, their system split the pickup between high 3 strings and low 3 strings. Another variation was for stereo outputs so I wonder if that guitar may not be fully functional as originally intended. You can see Neil Young playing the old "4-top-switch" models in various pictures on the Web. That was, I think, the 1960 model.

If I’m not mistaken, the Cream Stephen Stern Gretsch has a three-position selector switch, three-position tone switch, master volume, neck volume, bridge volume, and mute switch. The front coil of each pickup can be selected via dependent selector switches under the pickup selector and tone switches.

I think the White Falcon is stereo, that'd explain the many knobs and switches. They typically have a switch for filtering all strings or the top or bottom three. The switch at the back is, I guess, stereo/mono/off. The walnut, center block, guitar - did Pete like it? It was not clear ;)

Be sure to play several first..I went guitar shopping last year's w gretsch firmly in my sights.. but after playing 3 gretsch semi hollows I compared the experience to an epiphone es 339 inspired by Gibson line 2020 and it blew them all away...I left w the epi for 550+tax and dropped 150 on epi hard case...bout 750invit and it's amazing quality for that $... Plays and resonates way above it's price point

Gretsch G6119 owner here! If you want that Gretsch sound and also go budget try to get one with the Black top Filtertrons. I know Bigby's are tempting but on that range are not worth it, so I would advice to pick a fixed bridge.
@max_archer
@max_archer 2 жыл бұрын
@@ElLudens Yeah I'm looking at the G5422, which has the blacktops as far as I know. I don't think I can avoid the Bigsby though, seems like they've all got them in that range unless you're left handed. I may just find a way to lock it out or replace it with a fixed bridge if it ends up being more trouble than it's worth.

With regards to comments about Stephen Stern relics… Last year I picked up a '62 Double-Cut Firebird Heavy Relic, Masterbuilt By Stephen Stern Firebird Red… In terms of relic jobs it is the best I’ve come across. It looks in pictures like any other kinda scuffed up affair. However in my hands it feels like I’ve taken an old guitar from a museum. Not just the paint job, the hardware, tuners… every element of the guitar. Not anywhere near as hit and miss as the average relic job. It stinks too like many things do when they are decades old. The mojo factor playing these is very high. Historically mine is a cheaper model and the USD MasterBuild price reflected at

If you spent 5 minutes with them before shooting you'd know I guess haha. It sounds very much like the top right is the pick up selector, top left is treble bleed for both, bottom switches are output selectors for each. Sadly the switch all the way at the bottom of the body wasn't even used at all. Would've loved to hear what it does :( Stunning guitars, even more stunning playing. Actually, this is the way old Falcon's age since the headstock was covered with a material called Nitron, which is a plastic they used on their drums. It doesn't really turn cream like the rest of the guitar does.
