Um not really lol. Drew Barrymore is cute and perky and good for comedic fluff but she’s not a very good actress. She’s too soft. This is like someone doing a poor impression of Little Edie. Little Edie had more of an edge and was more feisty. I think Allison Janney would have been perfect for the role.

@christoddur
@christoddur 3 жыл бұрын
at the time, this was a television movie and not eligible for the Oscar. Drew did win the Golden Globe for her performance, and Jessica won the Emmy. Had this been released 10 years later, the two actresses WOULD have been eligible for an Oscar IF the film would have had a limited release in theaters in Los Angeles. Rules have now allowed movies from streaming services like Netflix to be nominated for the Oscar instead of regulating them as a television movie only eligible for the Emmy. My guess is that both Lange and Barrymore would have been nominated.

The problem is, if they had made it for theaters, any producers, or studio executives, would have probably wanted there to be a huge fictional plot, and explanation of why the Beales lived so shabbily. It would have been more of a work of fiction, rather than some minor changes in facts like this film did.

Yes, Little Edie was a real fashion plate. She had a unique sense of what clothes to wear and how to wear them. Why she was always tugging at the top of her low cut blouse and fixing her scarf is strange. I wonder how they survived all those years just eating liver pate and ice cream? And the broach she always wears with the scarves. She is always touching it and making sure it's in place. She didn't wear another broach, just the same one always. These two women led a wonderful life in their own opinion. I'm quite sure they were very happy. They looked at life as just a passing thing with odd occurrences at times. One thing I always found strange is that Little Edie always used a magnifying glass rather than get regular glasses. I think this was because back in the day they used to say, "Women with glasses never get passes." So they didn't wear glasses.

*A great attempt, certainly, but no one can do these two justice.* (and I’m a big Barrymore fan). They were both such unique gems..Little Edie especially had such a charming way about her.. from her accent, her poetic and peculiar way of putting things, her cadence, the micro expressions, mannerisms and laughter, her fashion sense for sure, her dancing and singing even the way she walked.. she didn’t just command a room, it was like the room didn’t exist until she arrived. She was the heartbeat of that house. No wonder her mother unfortunately couldn’t fathom being alone in it without her. They were both so fascinating on their own ...and together they were a firestorm of banter and bickering, hung on the past and a mirror that likely most every mother and daughter can see a tiny bit of themselves in. It’s really very odd to me that they would try to “recreate” these two at all when they did such a stellar job of being themselves. This is the essence of trying to reinvent the wheel..

This vid is a REAL TRIP even just to listen to... Rapturously disorienting in its practially identical mirroring of one another! Yes, Lange and Barrymore were spot on in their literal recreations of the original dialogue, intonation and actions.... However, Little Edie was such an incredible powerhouse and bundle of inexhaustable energy when she did those dances, and her movements and pivots were just so very dynamic, spastically elegant and mathmatically specific, that it is not at all a failure on Barrymore's part that she was essentially unable to do any true justice to her recreating of Little Edie's dancing, failing in her obviously well-intended attempt at a kind of precise approximation of Edie's brilliant, virtually inimitable dancing... Her attempt at it merely looked like someone shadow-casting identically timed choreography in front of a projection of the original footage, but without any of the actual joy and exhilaration of Edie's energetic (to say the very least!) artistry of locomotion. I'm sure that it would have been impossible for ANYONE to have gotten a precise imitation or impression of her one-of-a-kind cross-section of the poise and gracefulness of her physical expressionism mixed with amusing precision and the individualized march of some sort of demented atomic-age preteen patriotism positively overflowing with personal flourishes amounting to a polished, well-rehearsed and accomplished quality of performance coupled with a generous helping of that invigorating zest of psychotic aplomb which WAS such an integral facet of her overall personality. Rest in peace, lovely Edie's of Grey Gardens!!

When I first saw the documentary, I just didn't really get into it; I felt that it was so disjointed, or inconsistent. I had heard of the tv movie, and I wanted to watch it afterwards. When I watched the tv movie, the documentary was not too fresh in my mind, but I still felt as if I was seeing the actual Beales from the documentary. The tv movie gave me such an appreciation for the documentary, and then I discovered the treasure of the second documentary. I had heard of the musical, but I didn't think I could see it, being a stage show. Fortunately, I could at least hear the songs, and I thought they were quite good, though two songs were pretty similar in melody and rhythm. Obviously, the second act is the best part of the musical. Then, I found a video recording of the musical on KZbin, and was so impressed by the reenactments during the second act. Yes, the 2009 film really gave me a lot of appreciation for the whole history of these two fascinating women, as well as an understanding of why the documentary is the way it is.

Also, there is a second full-length documentary that was edited from the original footage after the Broadway musical came out, in the mid-2000s, by one of the original directors. It's called the Beales of Grey Gardens. They used some quotes from that in the movie also.

The difference one can see is it’s old upper class family on it’s uppers , in a sad but charming decline, and many years later it’s become as it’s said now iconic , but still sadly charming , the original cast was So much better!
