Pranks aren’t usually traps in Hermitcraft. Impulse probably thought that the Matrix rooms + quiz were the entire prank, and the diamonds were just a reward for sticking through it like a good sport.

Haven’t seen anyone point this out, but if Impulse was paying attention to the doors he could have known the diamonds were trapped. When Grian explains his three tests, he says a door that faces left is correct while a door facing right is incorrect. The door that lead to the diamonds was facing right and is therefore wrong.
