In the DragonLance series there is a race of gnomes who are all mad scientist types. They live in a mountain and use a series of catapults to traverse the different floors. Catapult fails? They release enough water to flood the bottom. Bottom flooded? They release a pile of sponges to soak up the water. Water fails? The sponges are still released. That's honestly how I imagine the hermits

I just rewatched, that's hilarious. The best part is we natural look at people's faces when listening to them so on first watching most won't see the chicken get in the boat, but if you know what to look for its super obvious.
