Best tips summarized: × _Keep enough space between junctions_ so atleast one train can fit in between, to raise capacity you could lengthen it for a higher capacity. (so eg. make two trains fit, a total of 4 both ways) × _Manage your lines._ If there's a train connection rarely being used and it's getting in the way of other lines, try to remove it or lower the amount of trains running on it. You could still keep the area connected by a bus route for example. × _Outside connections (intercity trains)_ can be very difficult to handle as you can't check or change their frequency. Try to keep them off your own lines by either giving them seperate tracks next to your own lines or only accepting them on stations most to the border of the map and making your own line getting them into the city. x _Making a hub_ is an easy way of letting people use public transit for their whole journey while creating the least lines. If you have two lines terminate here and there's a lot of transfers, consider joining them up. Bonus: To make your trains even more efficient, try to avoid tight turns and big height differences. If the track transitions more fluently into each new segment, the train will be able to go faster.

If you use One-Way rails, trains no longer get stuck. - Main reason they get stuck is because a train needs to cross a double rail.
@ziiofswe5 жыл бұрын
@@essmene I just fixed my train traffic a couple of days ago, after being just as bad as in this video, perhaps worse... After testing back and forth, I came to the conclusion that you need the double tracks for capacity (at least in my case, it's a rather big city), and then you just use one way tracks in the crossings to prevent the trains from crossing each others' path. (Just like the three way crossing Biffa added.) After all, they stay on their side of the track just like a car on a road, unlike in real life where they might run in either direction regardless of what side they're on... And this means that you already know how they will behave in the crossings and can plan your tracks accordingly.

You shouldn't force them to go straight at cloverleaf interchanges on the inside, otherwise traffic wanting to turn left will be forced to essentially go back the way they came, not being able to change into the highway from the slip lane.

It's one of the few things Biffa does that annoys me. I've seen at least 2 videos where he not only stopped all lane changing in the middle of the cloverleaf but also forced the slip roads to use the outside lane only, which absolutely forces them to only use the cloverleaf for U-turns.

You pressed "shift-S" in a few spots you shouldn't! In the middle of the highway crossing you make poeple that come onto the highway there only be able to turn off again and people already being on the highway only be able to go straight. I think I've seen you do that in previous videos as well.

One thing which I didn't see you do, is use one-way train tracks and flyovers/tunnels. Train gridlocks occur when trains diverge across a flat junction and come to a stop, which then blocks the line going in the opposite direction. Build a flyover for diverging or merging tracks, this'll help to keep trains moving smoothly in the opposite direction.
@nealjroberts40505 жыл бұрын
One of these days you'll use more than a single track to a multiple platform station! But good none the less. Cargo lines aside most of the things to do with metro apply to overground trains too (just with more space!)

Traffic control-wise this is true, but economically the metro can be made profitable. Trains are more satisfying to watch, but way more expensive to operate.

Would it have been possible to have the Multi platform station accept intercity trains, and then divide 5 lines from there?
@PColumbus735 жыл бұрын
The airport was fine in it's current location, the issue is congestion on the tracks. There are six separate lines mixing with freight trains that have to share a single set of tracks. Identify the congested sections of track and widen them like you would widen a road. Also, on the congested sections, GRADE SEPARATE JUNCTIONS! In other words, build a flyover or tunnel (where you can) so a train does not have to cross an oncoming track. It would help a lot!
@john.m.shukites5 жыл бұрын
One thing I often do that greatly helps congestion is, with the traffic management mod, build separate tracks for passenger and freight. Also, I like to place the main six-track station in the heart of my city, especially near tourism districts. I want people to gravitate to the part of my city where they will spend money.

I'm glad you did one with train's. I'm a console player and have played this game since it's release on console. I now have constantly been able to keep my traffic in all my cities in the high 80s. My current one is at about 88%. It took me a long time and watching alot of KZbin videos to get to this point. Now I'm going to start focusing more on train's and doing a better job at laying them out. I do ok but were going to soon have industries DLC and I have a feeling that cargo train's in particular are going to be more important....am I right to assume that? Very interested on anyone take with cargo train's as far as the industries DLC. I also feel that I need to put more thought on the passenger train's as well. I constantly use them because they definitely help with traffic but I don't necessarily paid nearly as much attention to them as my roads. Anyone more than welcome...i would love to here some thoughts on what maybe best with passenger train layouts and what works best for you?

Ooof, running all those trains on a single line? I couldn't do it. I'll usually have a multiplatform station in the city centre with 4 individual looped lines going to smaller stations in different parts of the city. The 5th and 6th line I'll run a parallel double 'main line' round the bulk of the city, with one line being a closed intercity line, and the other connected to the outside line with no intercity trains running on it. Also, on some of those busier train intersections, i'll run a bypass (much like you use to bypass stations) so that trains have two options for going straight on

Very nice video explanation of how to get trains flowing. From my experience I have found it useful to keep cargo and passengers lines totally separate as cargo can get extremely busy doing its own thing... (as we have literally not control over it!). I’ve there always separated it off from the main lines and never had it sharing the lines with the passengers anywhere.... seems an advert kicked in and I thought I’d reached the end of the video, so I missed your comment about keeping it separate!
@NLvideomaster5 жыл бұрын
I remember ever since the first city I built ended up about the same way this guys city ended up with trains I started building a whole separate structure with trains, so it'd basically be a metro system. The Intercity network would be completely separate from the municipal lines and that really works like a charm I've figured. (P.S. That idea sprung from the early days of cities when you couldn't disallow intercity trains yet.)
@quoniam4265 жыл бұрын
T junctions for trains are very bad. You've got to use the one tracks for traintrack junctions. Each track goes in the right way so there is no crossing to block trains going the other way. It makes building junctions more difficult but also more realistic.

18:09 - Careful restricting lane changing on those cloverleaf junctions. At the timestamped point, Biffa just forced anyone merging onto the highway to immediately exit right back off again, and they'll be adding to a traffic nightmare as they have to drive all over the place on some crazy route to get back where they want to go. Make sure, before you block lane changes, that you're not causing an even bigger problem then the one you're trying to fix. If you are, you'll just have to come up with a different solution to your traffic problem.
@FieryKanata5 жыл бұрын
With train stations theres also this little trick for using both platforms. It all depends on which station you start the line at. It's very hard to explain with words instead of showing you but I'll try. Imagine two train stations. You start a line in one, which will use the one track, and you end in the station where the train will enter the track on the same side on which you started. If you want to double up your line, it's best to start the second line in the other station, it will use the other track, which means the train will therefore also go the track on the same side as this one, doubling your station capacity. (its easier to imagine what I mean if you think in a loop. one train runs clockwise, the other one counter clockwise. The way you manage that in game is the same for normal lines that don't go in a loop.) iirc, this also counts for metro, monorail and trams. It'd be nice if paradox implemented a platform select function instead of doing it in this roundabout way.

With trains, you really need to create seperate rail lines for each type of train. I usually go for 3 different linesat least, with external freight-rail going to a single (or multiple in the same complex) dedicated station for each, an internal passenger rail line, and an internal freight line. Most of the ridiculous train tailbacks are caused by external trains trying to service your 30-odd passenger stations. By splitting external off into 1 dedicated station, with connections to an internal rail network, you can serious cut down the congestion. However, this sort of design needs to be implemented early in the cities design

I gave it a like because i like watching these videos, as for the quality of the fix itself i still scratching my head, why having all the stations connected via a re-route outside trapsport hub. passengers would ave to travel far away for a transfer to get to the next station. and the classic lane connectors forching cars into taking the first offramp right away as they get on, hopefully there was no connector set at the onramp so cars can still dive into the second lane. If you're going to have trains... passenger train lines need to be separate from cargo train lines. They should have lines for both, several actually, not building off one. Metros/Subways are great for short runs around the city. Have separate loops as well to avoid backups everywhere. Need space to do this efficiently. Try not to build everything on top of each other when building any city. Edit: One more thing. The smoother the curve, the faster any transportation goes.

This didnt work on my savegame... i mean it did make things a little better.. but the trains were still getting slowed down at the entry/exit point. I came across another solution where they unlocked the border tiles by using that 81 unlock mod & then added more rail connections... but that still kept getting clogged up until I used one-way rails to designate some external connections as incoming & others dedicated to outgoing. This did resolve the problem... but i didnt like that i had to unlock all 81 tiles to do so... it broke the game progression for me. So rolling back a savegame, i noticed that the map actually already has 2 train connections.... so i used one-way rails to force one route to be incoming only and the other to be outgoing only & that resolved the problem without me having to unlock all the tiles.

I just saw that I have a huge train problem in my city. One intercity passenger station only, and the rest just cargo trains... I think the solution would be multi-platform cargo stations?

But somehow, it's not the first video I see this, you definitely don't know how to fix a cloverleaf, as you "shift + S" under it, making people entering the way leaving immidiately.

My only problem in this game about outsider trains is that the rails doesnt separate the cargo trains and transport trains, they should have not based the train system in American train system.
@BiffaPlaysCitiesSkylines5 жыл бұрын
Cargo and people trains can be separated if you only put cargo stations on a separate line of its own 😉
@strider0295 жыл бұрын
@@BiffaPlaysCitiesSkylines Yeah good idea, i think i should have used custom maps, default maps dont offer two rails, instead there is only one straight rail so both trains spawn at the same line.

I have separated cargo and passenger lines. Now cargo is completely Jamed up. Is because I had too many stations?

Do you know how to handle the number of trams? The depot is just pumping trams as hell, the "tram jams" are very long, and there are way too more than needed... Do you know what to do?
@BiffaPlaysCitiesSkylines2 жыл бұрын
Yes, lower the amount of vehicles on the line with the slider 👍
@berenscott89995 жыл бұрын
That first intersection from the airport is absolute junk. You've got the train line going over a bridge to T intersect the mainline. Well, why cross over, unless your going to have one way traffic connecting on both sides of the mainline. I mean, we cross over the mainline to avoid crossovers, but then cross over anyways? The logic here is use a bridge to avoid a track blocking another track in the reverse direction.

how do you manage to move on the map so smoothly? I imagine you have mouse in right hand and the left hand uses some sort of touchpad for rotating and zooming?

Hey Mayor Biffa! How would you like to come to the island of San Palma, to help build some parks and to help build a suburb for the low residental houses. Our current Mayor, has not done a good job on designing the suburban area that currently exists on the island, we would like a professional like you to fix that problem. Also Mr Biffa, the industry owners of San Palma, would like to see if you can solve there traffic problems, so our industries can be more profitable. On to the Parks, the city has set aside $25,000 for you to build some cool custom parks around the island to bring other Mayor culture to the island. The only thing we ask Mr. Mayor, is to please try to keep from breaking any of the transportation line, as we have quite a few bus lines. All mods are needed in the subscribe pack for the save, even though some are new crisper vehicles, our city wouldn't look the same without them as they bring a style to the great island of San Palma. P.S- You need to catch a ride on our old trolley running by townhall in Downtown San Palma. If you decide to come to our island, once you leave the airport you should pick up the Yellow bus line back to the city from the Airport, so you can come to townhall and get some keys for the city to work on it. Thanks, Kind People of the Island of San Palma! Steam Workshop Save: (steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?edit=true&id=1713772838)
