@JasperNLxD5 жыл бұрын
10:30 that's a basic "turbo roundabout" setup. You take the inner part when you want to go further than half the exits away. You take the outer when you want to go right the next or one exit later. These are quite common in Western Europe (NL, Germany, Denmark, Flanders) and are usually placed at busy national intercity roads or right after highway exits. They work better than multi-lane roundabouts, because they actually split the traffic. With multi-lane roundabouts it happens often that drives run in to one another.

12:20 in the second roundabout people coming off the highway can only turn right, because you used the lane selector. There is no node between the roundabout entrance and the first roundabout exit, so they can't switch lanes (switching only happens at nodes). Because the cars are forced to take the right lane they will all take the first exit. This is why they choose the first roundabout: the second roundabout does not allow them to do this.

Regarding lane switching: the biggest issue is when cars wants to change two lanes at the same time, they come to a full stop and basically turn in a 90 degree angle. Simply preventing that helps, and I do that through the lane connector by manually allowing each lane to shift to a lane next to it. Let's say you have a three lane road. The lane to the left can go forward or change to the middle lane, the middle lane can change to the left and right lane or continue forward, and the right lane can go forward or change to the middle lane. It's a bit of work but it really helps.

2:12 and 3:22 - In a normal roundabout, traffic "turning left" would ideally switch lanes to the innermost lane ("left-turners" are the ones spending the most time on the roundabout, so if _they_ don't use the innermost lane, your roundabout has too many lanes), then switch lanes back to the periphery to leave; so they have to cross the in-between lanes twice. The "funny internal roads" allow "left-turning" traffic [from the top or bottom] to exit directly from the innermost lane, without having to switch back to the periphery. They look like a continuations of the "on" lanes from the left and right, but they're not - they could (and in an ideal world would) leave the roundabout a little earlier; but this is a bit easier to build in Cities: Skylines, and individual lane management can make it work like the ideal thing. It does have its merits, and might actually be quite useful - except that _in this case_ it just happens that nobody from the top or bottom seems to want to "turn left".

The idea he used was to have everyone come in on the outside of the roundabout and then keep going to more internal lanes until they can get off at an internal lane, meaning less crossing between people going off and going on. It's not a bad idea, but teh setup was not as good as it could be. But removing them may not have been the best solution perhaps.

I think the biggest problem with a lot of mayors, myself included for the longest time, is that we try to cram in as much as possible in as little space as possible so the traffic is just on top of itself all over the place. Why build industrial around a cargo hub, as but one example, it's because the mayor obviously thinks it's a waste of space to do otherwise. I used to fall into that trap when I first started the game too, but really once you learn to relax and just spread things out MORE, you find the city functions better as a whole.

19:16 You could possibly reduce the awkwardness of the lane-switching here by just allowing them to switch from each lane to the neighbouring lane(s), instead of allowing all lane-switches. Do the same for the next node (which currently doesn't allow any). That way everyone from the incoming lane can go onwards and at least the one or two right lanes of the highway can go off. You could possibly also use move-it to space the nodes out a bit nicer?

2:23, 3:23, 3:53: those roads leaving from the roundabout on the inside direction actually do have a purpose - they allow traffic from the north to go onto the highway east without crossing the traffic coming from the south going east, or from west going anywere . Of course, the lane coming off the highway doesn't need to be able to go onto it again (and should be forbidden to do so using lane management, or by putting the off ramp slightly before the on-ramp). (For completeness, you could also have similar ones for going off the highway.) In this case it just doesn't work because the highway is already blocked due to other problems.

Found this "Fix it" series a week or two back. Made me like the game so much I actually bought it. Note: vanilla game without mods was not as enjoyable. The mods make this game so much better and easier to play. Also I think Biffa sounds like this math guy I follow on youtube. Also, also, extra points for Linus comment.

0:50 well, almost... i once met a truck (at 1am on unlighted road on the countryside) that had the brilliand idea of doing U turn behind a sharp turn on 2way 1 line road... and because it's illegal, he turned every single light on his truck off... i was driving that road when suddenly a truck lighed on (like xmas tree) 5 meters before me, while he was finishing the U turn... still gives me shivers when thinking about it, because it was 80km/h road and i think i'm still here only because i had weird feeling and dropped the speed a bit few seconds before...

Just the sort of video I need; every decision I've been making on my tiny 15,000 citizen city to get my traffic moving has been bad... lol. But following Biffa's Traffic Fixing 101 is going to set me on the right path. :thumbsup:
