The parents of a British teenager who took his own life after becoming a victim of sextortion have made a direct appeal to criminals in Nigeria to stop "terrorising" the vulnerable.
Murray Dowey, from Dunblane, was only 16 when he ended his life last year.
It is thought he had been tricked by criminals in West Africa into sending intimate pictures of himself and then blackmailed.
Sextortion often involves victims being sent a nude picture or video before being asked to send their own in return.
They then receive threats the material will be shared with family and friends unless they meet the blackmailer's demands - pressure it is believed led Murray to take his own life.

My respect for BBC for telling the world how boys are victimised as well these days for these sinister acts like this, no one should ever be forced to having to take their own lives because of this.

Elderly farmers are considering 'taking their own lives' so their children can inherit farm land before Labours new taxes kick in...."no one should ever be forced to having to take their own lives because of this" either.

The asmr community hacks listeners against their will for roleplay. Many dont stop and try to blackmail the listeners to prevent them from reporting it. Skittykat is one of them and i have proof that i gladly expose.

I told my children a long time ago do not send anyone or any girlfriend naked pictures because they are online forever. If you must do it don't include your face. Simple. You can't blame the criminals they have no care or obligation to you. They have nothing. You have to protect yourselves in every situation. My son is 15 and doesn't use any social media at all none of my children do. I warned them of the dangers of chat rooms, grooming etc. It's tragic but too many parents seem to not have any idea what their children are doing. Just tell your children to tell you anything no matter how embarrassing. You need that kind of relationship.

Look at the poverty there. You live in a civilized country and have more education, talk to your children, be close to them so when they have a problem they go to you for help instead of deciding to end their lives.

Teenagers are often loathe to be close with their parents, which is why they're among the most vulnerable people for this sort of crime. Also, poverty is no justification for this. There are loads of poor people in this world who don't force teens to suicide for a few quid. Lame excuse for disgusting people.

It's not social media to blame, it's the criminals. My condolences to the parents.

It is social media to blame, as the newest form of addiction. Nothing good came from the pre tech addictions, it’s highly unlikely that the new tech addictions are any different. Just another Trojan horse dressed up as a gift

Happened to me a few years ago on a dating site. They’re scarily efficient about it and definitely work off a script. The guy that was blackmailing me even said he was sorry and that he was being forced into the work. You have about 10 minutes to transfer the money so I can see how that pressure might lead to drastic action. So sad to hear this young man’s story. Shame can be such a dangerous weapon

@ They did not. Nobody at his work knew what was going on. The same as we did not know about our workshop Forman. We did not know he had been taken to court over something he had done to a customer during works time. Only found out when another customer mentioned it.

They can hack into that too. The asmr artist that hacked me knew how much money i have and how much my hydro bill was:) They were not interested in money gladly. Just harrassing me and using me for roleplay. They were even able to hack and track me into the restaurants and cafes i tried to go to without my phone. That means nothing unfortunately. There need to be stricter laws and stronger forms of investigation. Good day tho 👍

With all due respect and regard to all victims, and disdain for all culprits.. I must say however that I am upset by the use of Nigeria as the "example"... Online extortion of every kind happens all over the world.. and from every corner of the world. The news about the Nigerian brothers who pressured an American kid to his death has already been plastered everywhere.. justifiably.. Further sensitisation needn't cast a particular country or people as typical suspects.. or even any 1st world country as typical victims. Pls do better BBC.

These don't seem to be low budget poorly-organized bands of people from third world counties, they are using technology to recognize targets that no online company from any third world country would ever be able to afford, less even access to, that's reserved esoteric technology only available for huge international companies from first world countries that are being displayed here. It seems more reasonable to suspect that nowadays children are being targeted by huge international and well renowned companies, exercising the worst practices on publics of all ages, for profit of even just for research purposes, to see if they can have that much influence over people, that's the power companies have been granted nowadays
