"You're aiming for as many brainfarts as possible..." Awesome advice from Kevpert, back in the day. Someone on KZbin recently suggested going into rings, holding down directional AR and boost without ever releasing, and just try to hover in one spot. You spend days flailing around like a spastic salmon, but it's worth it eventually, after an eon of constant brainfarts and excruciating boredom (cannot stress how important boredom is as a mental state for learning. It's like the pain bit of 'no pain, no gain' when doing exercises) your brain starts to 'see' the functional moments. It's a blessed relief to actual go Freeplay and NOT have to keep DAR down all the time. i think your 'smash nose into ceiling' is kinda the same routine, you seem to have both inputs constantly down. But aye, learning not to press is as important as learning when to. Best advice i ever heard was years ago, Fluump mentioned in passing how "everyone's practising flip resets, but most of them don't even know how to dribble the ball to the wall consistently". It really struck home, i decided to start all over again, go back to basics and relearn from the most fundamental aspects upwards. Once you do, you find the more complex mechanics kinda evolve naturally, and are therefore more useful in a competitive environment. Great tutorial, tyvm... xD

You're most welcome and thank you for your response! You seem to be in a similar mindset I do of absorbing as much information as possible from as many sources as you can. I recently just heard a podcast that had me rethinking how I learned and sourced things. Essentially, taking in info from all sides, every possible place, then finding your convergence point between them all. From there, you can understand the whole layout of the land rather than a single path to a destination.

Been training / playing with the idea 'DAR is a recovery mechanic' for months now, and my whole movement on the car has been improving dramatically. Also, the 'break more' one is good., though personally, i also came to realize i was using boost far too much, cut that out, and i'm even faster. Go figure. Gunna add this to my training routine for sure. The way I’ve trained my air roll recoveries is going into whatever rings map and turning off the level reset button so that I can never feel like I’ve messed up too quickly and automatically just reset the shot out of frustration to get that perfect set up. Doing this forced me to always attempt, no matter how long it takes or how many camera changes I need to switch between to know where I’m supposed to be going, I always just put maximum effort into getting myself, in the air, back into position to finish the level. Once I started getting better at this I started deliberately tapping parts of my car off of the rings occasionally as I went through them. This helped with envisioning recoveries before I had to make them. I could see that the right side of the nose of my car is going to clip that ring, that’s going to send my car spiralling left and probably backwards, I know the next ring I need to get to is to the right. I knew then how to be ready to make that recovery and still get through the next ring. It feels similar to the ceiling drill to me. Hope this makes sense.

As a former SSL and coach, I don't tend to like tutorial content because they often are "hollow" when it comes to advice, but this has a LOT of substance to it. I don't normally send people to YT videos for learning material, but I would definitely do so for this video! It is a highly complex maneuver with basics and advanced applications with many different possible movements.

Great video! I started this game using free air roll, but at around plat, I watched some KZbin videos, and decided it was worth it to start learning ARL. I used that for a year or so, but was hardly getting anywhere and decided to rework all of my controls, removing free air roll completely, and having both directionals bound so I wouldn't resort to Free air roll in awkward situations. Of course this was really tough at first, but after a few months of casual play and a little rings and recovery training I got pretty consistent with ARL for aerial plays and adjustments, and only used ARR for jumping off walls and times when it was required, but I am now realizing the benefit of using ARR in the air for a better first touch in some cases, to get more power in others, or even swapping from ARR to ARL and visa-versa can really help regain control or put you in a position the opponent would never expect. Learning a 2nd air roll is really hard when I already have pretty ingrained muscle memory for the first one but I am hoping to keep making progress on my way to complete aerial control. One thing I really struggle with even with my dominant air roll though is when the nose of the car is facing the camera, it really throws me out of wack.

I have played Diamond the last year (being stuck) and when I look at my replays, mechanically I am quite a bit better than last year. I am more consistent D2-D3 and C1 at brief times but feel like overall there are more and better players in these divisions without a doubt. Air dribbling from the corner in the net is almost nothing special and even flip resets are not uncommon, although often ineffectively. I think the big thing is that I only play 5 to 8 hours in 2 weeks and so I don't play enough to outgrow my rank. I feel like Champ is possible but the hours that I put in, more hours should be spend on mechanics and watching replays.
@mistere585710 ай бұрын
@@punk4rockorz excluding last season air dribbling and flip resets are not common in Diamond. I would see it maybe 1 out of 4 games and it was almost always a C2-3 player who was carrying a friend. I've also noticed that it is easier to get out of Diamond 50-75% through the season as many of the smurfs have moved on by that point. The hallmark of diamond players is they try to make up in speed what they lack in mechanics so they will be stupid aggressive (emphasis on stupid). The way to beat them is to control the ball while you have possession. Draw them in to where they commit and then flip it past them. The other strategy is to use tactical demos. Because of how aggressive they are, they will frequently be out of position so a well timed demo will result in a 2v1 or an open goal situation.
@punk4rockorz10 ай бұрын
@@mistere5857 Air dribbles are definitely common. At least every other game I am teamed up or against a player that slots Air dribbles pretty consistently with quite a lot of control. The ground controle is all over the place, ranging from very neat and impressive plays to extremely sloppy and badly utilized. Flip resets are quite a bit more rare but it's not uncommon to see Champ ranked players (at least I think) because they got quite the tricks and sometimes attempt to score with flip resets. I agree with the speed and lack of mechanics. Diamonds are fast but also get sloppy fast and it's far from consistent. To utilize your first tactic you need a good first touch, good controle oversight and a few tricks. It's not something we Diamonds can pull out many times in a game. Especially when the opponent is pressing hard. Although I don't mind high pressure opponents in Diamond. One mistake from the opponent can also result in a counter goal, which is not uncommon. The demo tactic is one I use way too little. I start implementing more physical play but don't always recognize the best moments to do it, or usually too late or early. For me it's usually; when I have mechanically a better day, I score more and make spectaculair saves but take more risks in challenging as I am taking more confident decision-making (read; not better). When I don't feel as good mechanically I play more passively and controled making less brash decision making and getting scored on less. Result is very mixed. Usually I get worse progressively with better mechanics as my decision making gets worse, also not compensating for better mechanics. With worse mechanics I get better over time. My mechanics warm up, while I make better decisions. I should really make up my mind better and make better decisions when I feel like I play at my best mechanically.

PLEASE HELP ME For years and years I have been trying to learn how to air roll but the thing is I just don’t understand the explanations, they just don’t click. So I have a couple of questions I need to get answered. The first one is imagine I want to move to the right while air rolling, do I only hold my left stick to the right when the car is facing forward or do I also hold the stick to the opposite side (left) when the car is facing backwards??? Another question I have is how do you people move so quickly from like one side to the other when air rolling it’s like you see a ball is far to the left and you just air roll and you reach the ball as quickly as if you weren’t. I feel like when I air roll I take a long time to get to the ball if it is in the air and on the left or right. This might be because I only move my stick when the car is facing forward (to the opposite net) I don’t know if I should move the stick around at all times if I want to move left. If I do have to move the stick around at all times where should I move the stick to when the car is facing at the opposite net and when the car is facing If I want to move left??? Thank you for your time.

Well done Griff! Hard to break down such a - on sight simple - yet, to learn, so complex mechanic. Here is some input from my journey to learning and understanding it. (If i were a video guy, it's part of what I'd show. ^^) You mentioned in your first video the 1-direction technique, and it connects to it's idea. Now: Lets assume you only have 8 (main) directions on your stick (cardinal and ordinal, instead of literally 360°). Then your nose of the car can point in 8 different directions relative to the camera. And with pressing Air roll left/right, it also changes its roll position (1 hood facing -> 2 diagonal -> 3 sideways -> 4 diagonal -> 5 wheels facing -> 6 diagonal -> 7 other sideways -> 8 diagonal -> back to 1: hood facing) - and that about every seconds or so! (How long does one ARL spin take for the whole rotation?*) So the complexity of air roll left - flying is pretty much: All joystick inputs possible x nose orientation x roll orientation ---> so (simplified!) 8 x 8 x 8 = 512 possible actions / choices you could make ... PER EVERY SECOND (/full air roll)!!! So reducing one variable to 1 (joystick movement) reduces it's complexity by a lot! (down to "only" 64 possible choices per second ^^) -> easier to start learning. I have some more understandings that are probably too scince based to be fun or easily digestable - but if you'd like to hear them, let me know ^^' Keep up the good work!

I'm totally lost in RL and my very experienced friend has no clue how to help me. As of now, I'm using L1 on controller as to Air roll, but in the primitive way. Holding L1 makes my Stick inputs be the directional input to the air roll. I find myself struggling a lot in aerial control, as in I have barely any, and I'm quite often just missing a ball by inches due to having the bad habit of holding L1 and pretty much only flying in a straight line from where I started due to air rolling the entire time. I have a directional air roll bound to triangle to recover with a half flip, and I'm comfortable with that, but what I'm sort of gathering from this video is a LOT of players are just using a directional air roll all the time so that they can manage rotation and direction simultaneously while up? I have maybe about 300hrs stuck dia/plat, on the level of a gold player when it comes to aerial ball control / even following the ball from the wall up.

@Grifflicious9 ай бұрын
Yeah, as soon as you feel comfortable and are ready to step it up, by all means, start bringing in the other stuff! I recommend burst training. i.e., keep your current routine, sprinkle in something new for 10-15 minutes, then go back to your routine. When you keep them separate and deliberate, you have an opportunity for the skills to sort of adapt and gel in your mind and your current mechanics while also keeping the "old" mechanics fresh and improving.

@Grifflicious9 ай бұрын
@@adibislive No problem! I have a bit of a standard I keep which is training something for more than 30 minutes really starts to have diminishing returns and training something new should be done in 10-15 minute increments. That way you don't start to develop the wrong habits or bad movements along the way. Especially if you feel yourself hit that wall of, "nothing I do is working"...then step away and do something as a palette cleanser.

Can someone explain to me why spinning up for the ball instead of just going straight for it and rotating to the spot u want is better i dont get it
@djamiljo9310 ай бұрын
Did someone here changed his directional air roll bind after learning it? I kinda think i to flip air roll left and boost, put boost on R1 and ARL on circle. I can't touch the ball in musty speed flip test only because i don't boost for 150ms because i guess fat thumbing boost and jump doesn't work for me... I can't use right thumb to look around while boosting... I can't use air roll right on square while boosting for halflip and other... but I more than 3k hours near 4k not sure if it's worth it but I'll certainly will be better once i get used to it and left to air roll right too

Can someone explain the point of the "reference point" at 6:17? You correct with left stick only when the car is facing forwards or backwards, is that it? And max rotation speed is constant, so you just gotta get the rhythm?
@Grifflicious9 ай бұрын
The reference point is basically finding a point in the car's rotation that you choose when you adjust each time it comes around. In my example, I choose the front left fender so whenever the car would spin around, I kept my eye on that part of the car. When I saw it come around, that's when I would provide an input adjustment. I just did this for a while until I got the "rhythm" of the spin and when to adjust. And yes, the spin speed is constant at max rotation so it always takes the same amount of time for the car to roll 360 degrees. Those two things in tandem helped me to feel out the mechanic rather than fight it and myself trying to figure it out. Hope that helps.

Hey @@Grifflicious, thanks for the answer. Didn't understand how to get started at first, but after rewatching and playing around in a big ass map (Noob Dribble) I think I got the idea: feather boost to keep in the air, keep directional roll pressed as much as possible, then control direction with left stick only when the hood is facing me, since it's the normal position I'm used to. But quickly I realised freestyle was too much work for something that would reduce consistency in actual matches, as you say, so instead I turned wholeheartedly towards your air roll training, which is already helping to make useful corrections in game. Will give freestyle another "whirl" after practicing backwards flying so I can correct with the hood away too (when is that cheat sheet coming? It would actually come handy for us unwitting Will Smith fans! xD)

When do you use directional air roll vs free air roll? That for me is the hardest part.
@Grifflicious9 ай бұрын
Free air roll is reserved best for air roll shots and minor adjustments. i.e., needing to slightly adjust the wheels to land on a surface. Directional air roll is best when needing to make larger, in-air adjustments that require you to be fluid and efficient.
@hivenoun74019 ай бұрын
@@Grifflicious Thanks for the answer, truly appreciated. Community is kinda split on this one, hence why I asked. I've played with keyboard for approx 3000 hours. Just now decided to try to learn the DAR and actually unbinded my free air-roll, but realized after 3 weeks of practicing that I feel kinda handicapped without it even when I've dar right and dar left binded. It just makes those slight adjusments and smooth recoveries hard (at least for me).

I only use free air roll in the last portion of a speedflip, air roll shots and recoveries are directional for me aswell 2 axis movement is just better so just spam it

i would suggest to start training "shots" in the pro aerial training of rocket league while using your air roll. Also learn something like flip resets, not because u will be able to use it immediately but bcse it will force u to use air roll in a way that u will be able to use ingame. Hope this is usefull.

Directional air roll. Specifically air roll left. That's how the car is able to spin from a single button press.

@@SirYami-qz5go slow down and focus on keeping the nose in the air at the same point in your rotation as the car spins around. Pick a point at which you’re going to adjust and ONLY adjust at that point. Don’t worry about turning. Just keep the nose straight up and down.

@@SirYami-qz5go then I’m going to guess you’re over adjusting. Speeding too long holding the stick in any one direction and on top of that, boosting constantly which throws the car even further out of wack if you’re already struggling to keep it airborne. Best advice is to only boost when your nose is pointing up.

Can u do an followup video to aerial overcontrol? I spun all the time as i started learning Directional Airroll (DONT DO THIS IT WILL HINDER URSELF LATER ON) now i have the problem that i feel like i "overcontrol" my Directional Airrol (KBM) iam constantly putting inputs into my Airroll, even when i dont have to, which makes the whole Airroll in the air, look very controlled from outside, but tbf for me, it stops my progress in having a way smoother feelin airroll, which hinders me ultimateively going way futher up the skillcelin and tryin out new mechs! This is extremely obvious while defending & attacking, iam sometimes in a position where i though, yea just a few more addtional inputs, couldnt hurt... and then i put the ball not where i wanted or i even miss it, or the worst part, i touch the ball with a bodypart with which i dont wanted to... I really didnt realized that till i stopped playing RL for around 2-3 months and were coming back! Keep it up!

Basically, the idea is that you can adjust the car with up, down, left, or right, but you should only be using them briefly in order to set the car on the correct/intended course. You don't want to HOLD any of these directions.
