Grilled Cheese VS Cheese Toastie | British VS American

I don't know what that 'British' toastie is, but I've never done anything like that... We either do a toastie in a toastie maker, or cheese on toast is literally toast with cheese added on top, which is cooked under a grill, not on the hob!

A cheese toasty is 2 slices of bread, buttered on the outside, filled with cheese, and put into a breville sandwich toaster! Cheese on toast is bread, with cheese on top, put under the grill. I have no idea what this British thing is meant to be. The Worcestershire sauce is good, as is hp brown sauce.

I'm an American, and I still can't understand why people call a "grilled cheese" a "grilled cheese" if it's griddled. I usually go with something more like your method. But it isn't served "open face" (as they say) and I cook it in the toaster oven already sandwiched together. . I slice my own bread, and grate (often slice) my own cheese (with the exception of crumbly cheeses like goat and bleu). A lot of Colby Jack (often with avocados and portabellas on sprouted grain), or a Monte Cristo with veggie bacon and German mustard. Last spring, I made a really good one with Dubliner, some butter, and big plump Thompson raisins. Or in the fall, heirloom apples and gouda. But Worscestershire and mozzarella.... I'm going to have to try that.

Then put the cheese on the toasted side of one and press the toasted side of the other down on top of it (add any extra sauces or whatever you want before this) so you then get to toast the untoasted side of each while the cheese melts in between.

I’m American and I didn’t know people put ketchup on grilled cheese, I’ve never done that before. I normally put butter on the outside of the pieces of bread to keep it from sticking to the pan and put a slice of each type of cheese I have on it. I also use Italian bread for it because the bread slices aren’t too big. I also cut mine diagonally in both directions to make it four pieces.

The acid of the ketchup helps cut through the richness of the butter. It's good. If you order at a restaurant with fries, the ketchup will already be there so give it a try! Also saying it's for ketchup dousers on everythingers. I am not one. Fries and grilled cheese is about the only thing i put them on and i really use as an accent.

In Cuba we have Pan con Queso which is a side cut cuban or french bread with Muenster cheese sandwhiched in the middle and toasted. No butter, just bread and cheese. You can also do the more Cuban/American spin and instead use white or whole pre sliced bread, toast two slices LIGHTLY, add the cheese and microwave it for 15-40 seconds depending on how much cheese you have on or how gooey you like it, then finish toasting the sandwhich as a whole to get it crisped again. And it must ALWAYS be served with a can of Jumex mango nectar OR a bottle of Malta Goya OR a Tamarind Jarritos. Unless you happen to be eating it as breakfast in which a cafecito is just fine.

In Ireland a cheese toastie is always (for me and my family and friends anyway) made in a toasted sandwich maker. The design is similar to a George Foreman grill, but with individual compartments for the 2 sandwiches.

I used to make a cheese toastie under the grill, grill one side of the bread, flip, add cheese, slap in another slice of bread and grill that. I have a toastie maker but it makes 2 and I can usually only eat one.....so I tried the grilled cheese method of butter and a frying pan and was converted. I would NEVER use American sliced cheese though. Usually cheddar, sometimes Red Leicester. I don’t bother grating it. I always put Worcester sauce on cheese on toast. Yum.

I thought cheese on toast would have been done but didn't see a grill get used. Use a grill (heat from above) toast one side flip can butter and add the cheese or just the cheese then grill until the cheese is bubbleing sprinkle with salt to taste and sauce if wanted.

as a Dutchie, I always put pork on my toastie, we also call it a tosti. So the usual is young(ish) cheese and pork, often dipped in ketchup, and a lot of people use a special machine thingy. Most people don't even put butter on it if they use the machine.

As an American, it is my understanding that Worcestershire sauce is comprised of either fermented sardines or anchovies. I don't remember which, but along with that are a variety of spices and salts (onion for example is used) to make for a more appealing taste. If you actually want to know if this is true, just read the nutrition label on the bottle.

I make neither grilled cheese or toasties like this. I was under an impression that "toastie" was made in a press that seals the edges - known as a jaffle in Australia - and my way of making grilled cheese involves actually putting it under the grill. That also uses far less butter.

in australia we put it under a grill... or when i was a kid we used a jaffle maker but these days they're really hard to find and people use sandwich presses.
