I remember playing this game with my sister when it first came out. This is THE game that taught me how effective sound in video games could be. Early on, there's a phonograph, and the only thing it plays is a baby crying with its parents laughing in the background. 26 years later and that moment still sticks in my mind.

THREE MAJOR TIPS: 1. *The US patch lets you to remap controls to wasd + mouse,* or whatever you want, in the menu. There's also fan-made downloadable config files in the Steam and GoG forums for modern controls, high resolution and improved texture filtering via DOSBox. 2. You jump twice as far when you're running. It makes the platforming stupidly easy; and looking down can help you see the exact edge of the platforms too if running isn't easy enough. 3. Press Ctrl (default) to fire your weapon at any time, even when there's no enemy/object detected with the cursor. You can use this to manually reload the pistol (at the expense of wasting whatever rounds are left in the mag at the time).

I got this game like 10 or 11 years ago on gog and absolutely loved it. It took me almost a whole day to customize the controls (with external tools) to make them bearable, but it was worth it. I love such ambitious efforts from the 90's. That era of CDs, FMVs, early 3d and experimentation will always have a special place in my heart.
@J.DeLaPoer Жыл бұрын
This was the golden age of gaming, and ROTH was one of the last, greatest and most ambitious examples of the early FPS and FMV/Adventure genre. Also one of the very, very few to combine the genres. Now it seems all we get from the big studios these days are the latest Halo or COD clones, pay-to-win lootboxes, season passes, DLC and other cancerous trash (most of which also suffers from terminal consolitis). I miss the good old days of the late '80s to mid 2000s; before gaming became mainstream and thus dominated by corporate greed and the philosophy of graphics over substance.

The US patch allows rebinding of controls for WASD and (pseudo) mouselook. There's also guides on the GOG and Steam forums to improve the resolution, texture filtering, etc. I still haven't been able to figure out how to get 16:9 widescreen and I'm not sure that's even possible... but bottom line is that patching it removes the biggest negative/obstacle of weird controls.

@J.DeLaPoer Жыл бұрын
I found it enjoyable, certainly epic in scope and certainly underrated. Don't get me wrong, I love it and replay it every few years around Halloween. Definitely a classic. With that gushing out of the way however, the best parts were the first 2/3rds where you're basically playing "occult detective" exploring the creepy old house, church, cottage, etc; and gameplay is finding clues, reading documents and solving puzzles with some combat in between. The atmosphere and art direct are excellent and the amount of pure detail crammed into everything is great. It goes downhill in the last 1/3rd or so when it transitions from eerie haunted mansion and other real-world locations and occult horror themes to these bright, sunny, abstract fantasy worlds full of bland mazes and ridiculous "1990s adventure game logic". The infamous brain hunt in Sheol, hedge maze in Raquia, and the sword puzzle for some particularly godawful examples. Or in a nutshell, Grim's review makes exactly the same points and criticisms, and he's right. Still it's a damn shame we never got a sequel. ROTH got very high ratings and sold well, but the studio got screwed/dissolved in a bunch of mergers and corporate fuckery which killed off the in-production sequel they were working on. I'd settle for a remaster. Paging @Nightdive!

I agree. I mean it goes downhill in the last third or so with the bland, abstract fantasy worlds as Grim talks about here. But it's still a masterpiece and I can forgive the fantasy worlds and few bits of "90s adventure game logic" garbage for all the hours I had exploring the eerie old mansion playing occult detective. Unfortunately we'll likely never see a sequel; but I'd settle for a remake or even a good remaster at this point (paging Nightdive!)

I think the reason stuff like Realms, Tex Murphy and Wing Commander 3 work so much better than most FMV games is because they use FMV cutscenes in basically the same way that modern games use Cutscenes today. I also think the combat is noteworthy for a horror game. The rechargeable weapons relied on timing not normally seen at the time in FPSs. The US patch adds normal control binding options in the game menu. The GoG and Steam forums also have fan-made control config files for wasd + mouse that work on all versions; plus DOSBox configs for high resolution and improved texture filtering too. I never realized that was the Normality engine, Normality is one of the best games I've ever played. For some reason they only sell the version with UK Voices in it these days and they suck, you have to replace the voices with the US version, totally mandatory. It changes the atmosphere of the whole game.

I've started watching your channel with that video "game about cars with guns", and it's been a year already! And it was great. The channel I mean, not the year :D The music is rad too, I've listened the microtransgressions a hundred or more times probably

I do quite enjoy Ross's video on this game, and I think it hits a fair perspective for how I think most people will run into and bounce off this game. I think Grim puts in a bit more to keep track of everything going on with the story, since this video makes the entire story and progression of the game make a lot more sense with a lot more context and detail. I think a lot of people will have trouble getting into this game, keeping track of all the story stuff, and so on. Modern games give a lot of hand holding, and this game was doing a lot of weirdness combining point and click and shooters and opting to not copy System Shock's setup. Amazing video as always! Very happy to have another long Grimbeard video to rewatch constantly
