I think many of us knew this story, but you managed to pull it all together in one excellent video. The visuals, especially at the end, are stunning. Lately, you've been doing some heavy stuff, but, as you say, it's history. History needs to be documented, and remembered. Keep up the excellent storytelling.

@SpaceCattttt 2 жыл бұрын
Nice! Some have said that his scene at the end of the film is superfluous and only exists because the studio forced Hitchcock to make extra sure that audiences understood the story. And in a way, I agree with that. But I also happen to enjoy that scene because of your great uncle's performance. Not only did he have a pleasant voice to listen to, but the way he delivered his speech of exposition made him sound fairly modern for the time. The film was shot at a time when depression was still being treated with electric shocks, so to have someone actually consider the psychological problems of the antagonist was very mature, I think. I haven't read the book or the script, so I'm not sure who wrote your great uncle's lines, but he delivered them convincingly nevertheless.

I was born in WI, and now, 57 yrs later, have come back here. We're outside of Madison. My husband and I went through Plainfield, and decided to stop at the cemetery where Gein's family is buried. It was no big deal lol. Stuff like this happens sometimes in this messed up world. Also, my husband's father was a Postman in Madison after Gein was put into Mendota State Hospital there. He delivered there and to the ward where Gein was held, and often saw him when he delivered. True Story!

I found an aerial photo of the Gein property from April 29, 1957. Southwest corner of the intersection of Archer Ave & 2nd Ave just like you said. In the aerial you can see the house near the intersection and the barn about 50 yards south of the house, and they both faced 2nd Ave. The house sat exactly where Baby Ghoul walked onto the property to the right side of the gate, and sat maybe 15 yards off the road. She first stopped and stood looking south about where the porch on the south (or left) side of the house was. So yes, you both stood on the ground where the house was. That driveway circled past the left side of the house and went south, down to the barn.

All over the world, people know of this real life story. I was one of those, for pure, historical purpose, a person that bought so many true crime magazines, books and the like and studied so much of this history. Then one morning, and this is the honest truth of it... I woke up one morning and literally said "I can't do this anymore". I boxed every single magazine, book, video and dvd; then sold them. Whether it was Ed Gein, Dahmer, Henry Lee Lucas or others; I had had enough. But I love the way you present (as mentioned in your video about The Wonderland Murders), could listen to you every time. Ever consider teaching History? Also, and bare in mind that I've only just discovered you, any chance of Lizzie Borden? Her history is one of many theories that she did not commit those murders with an axe; but that it was her housekeeper I believe; and a relationship she had with her? I look forward to more of your great videos. Cheers mate!

try looking at things from other ppl's perspective. he was a person, who from what the movies i've seen (i know hollywood exaggerates but, there is truth to it even if it is a shred) he was mistreated mentally probably emotionally/physically because he seemed a little different or "slow" mentally & you add in the delusions that religion can install into ppl + the time period (even though there r still plenty of situations that happen like his but don't always end up the same), situations like these r ticking time bombs. he seemed nice & helpful because i'm sure besides these acts he was a nice & helpful person, but you don't know what he was going through internally, alone. he had a curiosity about women & wasn't properly taught how to interact & told "lies" (which thb were they really lies? she probably wasn't a very nice person herself & we don't know how his family actually treated him, but sometimes it takes a not so nice person to get actual truth out as damaging as it might b) when the right combinations collect in an environment it can really damage some ppl. there r a lot of cases where families turn on certain members in families & torment in some way/s to achieve something, whatever that something might b i'm guessing reasoning varies. i don't necessarily condone or defend the things he did but i feel bad for him with the way that ppl treated him, he's not the only reason why he was the way he was. every1 is always telling every1 else to take accountability while not accepting that his actions could have been caused BECAUSE of his environment which would b partially other ppl's responsibility unless they left him to b truly alone, but in cases like this it's always ppl who want control over something or some1's life/perspective etc. some ppl aren't as able to control themselves, you never know who or when that's why you aren't supposed to provoke. you never know who exactly is doing the provoking tho, unless you r.

Hard living in past generations leads to rough aging. We can complain about our problems today, but honestly we've had it easy. We didn't grow up during the great depression, suffering the effects of malnourishment in our formative years. We didn't have friends who took up smoking at ten years old. We didn't do hard manual labor seven days a week on the family farm from the time we were big enough to carry a shovel. It all adds up.

I don't find it weird that Gein and his victims are in the same cemetery. Families(especially at that time) would *buy* family lots. They own those lots. Of course they would bury you in the ground you bought for that purpose.

I was born in Omaha Nebraska but my family moved to a small town of like 400 where I mostly grew up. Living in the middle of nowhere just has a macabre weird feeling. The amount of loneliness and stillness can be too much at times. This video really reminded me of the types of areas I grew up in and it doesnt surprise me that Gein got away with grave robbing for so long. Feel really bad for Plainfield though. Everyone there has to live with the putrid past and I'm sure they get sick of people who come to, "sightsee". Kudos for keeping the video professional and not showing any of the gory details ❤

Thank you for saying this. Mr. Gein didn't have much of a chance in this world. Raging alcoholic father, overly-zealous and overbearing mother, near-complete isolation both physically and socially. He endured endless teasing as a child due to a benign growth over his eye and his small stature, only to go home to even worse treatment of himself and others. An irony is that he "lost it" after his mother died, after how she raised and belittled him. But she was his world. She was all he had and, at his age, all he wanted for the rest of his life. He was teased and ostracised and taken advantage of by people in town (they never returned borrowed tools, did not pay him enough for work he did for them, if they paid him at all, and lots of people looked down their nose at him.) He was a good deal of a pariah, an afterthought, and a joke, and this was all before he committed any crime. In a suburb or a city, these things are bad enough, but in a microcosm of a tiny town (and an isolated farmhouse near that tiny town) the effects are magnified and amplified. It's so much worse. It's ironic that he inspired the character of Buffalo Bill because Hannibal Lecter, in describing Buffalo Bill, said, "(He) wasn't born a criminal...He was made one through years of systematic abuse." The same can be said of Ed Gein. And I'm not making any excuses for what Mr. Gein did. At all. There are none. But there are many reasons, one of which was his perpetual loneliness. I guess maybe one thing we can take from Mr. Gein's example is to never let anyone get so far away from the light, from compassion, from company, from love. The results of allowing this to happen to someone bears horrific results like the ones we learned about today. We must do better. And we can. We have to. If for no other reason than hearing these two souls have to re-tell the details so that we never forget. They've paid a price for both learning about these crimes and telling us. A price in their souls. A price that doesn't come cheap or without nightmarish consequences. It takes hearts and souls of giants to do what they have done for us and for posterity. They have my love and respect for always for what they do.

@@fairmaidenwhite wow put far better than I ever could....that's the first feeling I had when I first came upon Ed Gein's story. And Michael and Jessica are wonderful.....they bring so much contemplation to the stories they tell. Thank you fairmaiden 👍
@fairmaidenwhite

@@acerimmer1023 Well, it meant a lot to me that someone noticed that Mr. Gein had a lot of help getting to where he got. I've always felt that nothing like this story should have ever happened and that, as a society, we do bear some responsibility for it. Not a lot and definitely not the lion's share, but a little, and that's unacceptable to me. We need to focus on being someone's lighthouse, not their rocks of destruction. I don't know that in Mr. Gein's case a whole lot could have been done, but it was worth trying. Every soul is worth trying to save, at least until it's obvious that they've chosen to abide in the darkness, and then...I dont know. What I do know is that we can do better by each other, and it's a wonderful and amazing thing to behold when we see it. We have so much power to do so much good for others and because we are either lazy or we accept the lies we've been fed that we are either unable or unworthy to do anything about a bad situation, nothing gets done. It's b.s. We're all in this life together. What happens to one of us, happens to all of us, in a way. We have to stop embracing futility and accepting the crumbs from the master's table. We deserve better. We deserve more. Even Mr. Gein deserved better and more before he did what he did. The only way to stop another Ed Gein, or worse, is to get up and do something, and do it out of love. Not for clicks or likes or credit, just because it's the right thing to do. Hold a door open for someone. Help your disabled neighbour take her trash out. Visit a nursing home and adopt a Grama. Work a soup kitchen shift (or 10). Something. Anything. It all starts with us reaching out to each other and shining the light, even if you think your light is too small. A million candles makes for a blinding light that evil can not abide or flourish in. We need to be the lighthouses to both guide and save each other. We are the real superheroes. Like Michael and Jessica - I bet they never saw themselves as superheroes, but they are. They're lighthouses, too, even if they don't realise it. They've shone their bright light on some of our darkest history in order to help us not to repeat it. It's not for clicks and likes. There is purpose and a mission for what they do. Watching Michael read the list of ghastly deeds and seeing his very visceral reaction to them tells me that. It takes bravery and b a lls to do it and their work commands respect for that alone. When Jessica was describing what happened to these women, my heart almost broke that she had to even say those words. Yet she did so. Why? For shock value? No. To yank the situation back from the sensationalism and give the victims back their humanity. Their humanity being ravaged is what enrages us, what makes us act in their honour and in their defense. Jessica is wise beyond her years and being brave enough to talk about those crimes against fellow women is an act of savage bravery. I didn't think I could respect her more, but I'll be darned if I don't now. And I didn't mean to ramble here or take up so much of your time, but I wanted to thank you again for showing an uncommon level of insight. It can make some people uncomfortable, but not me. I appreciate it more than you know. Keep being a lighthouse, friend. Those rocks aren't going anywhere and there are lives to save and bless, but I'm sure I don't need to remind you of that. You seem to be a natural at seeing things like that. Shine on, Friend. Shine on.

@@fairmaidenwhite thank you for your truly wise and kind words....I read your message twice as I couldn't believe, but at the same was relieved, that other people feel that way.... We are absolutely all one people, we all share this world, and we must look after each other. I'm in no way excusing Ed's crimes, but I don't believe anyone is born that way....and anybody who does have fragilities should, in a perfect world, be loved and supported.. Thank you fairmaiden...you are wise, maybe more than you know. And Michael and Jessica?.... I came to them via their movie location videos, but followed them through their interest in street art, fascinating odd buildings....but it's something more with them .... Ed's mother was a religious fanatic, from the books I've read on the subject. She was constantly telling her boys that women were all harlots and self gratification was better than to fornicate. Ed finally snapped and decided he wanted to be a woman. He used to dress up in the vest, put on a skin mask among other parts, and wander around the house imagining he was a woman.

Something peculiar I noticed: On the Bernice Worden headstone, the star symbol with O E S engraved on it. That symbol is tied to the Order of the Eastern Star, and adopted into the Masonic Fraternity and Freemasons in 1873. 1873 is also on George Gein’s headstone as his year of birth. So Ed Gein's Father was born the same year the Order of the Eastern Star was brought into the Freemason's, and the same symbol is engraved on the first victim's headstone... weird.

Just out of curiosity - how many locals approached you while filming this? As a Wisconsinite from just north of the area, I can say the people of Plainfield obviously don't enjoy being associated with the Gein story and can be rightfully upset when people come asking about it - like, as soon as you pull a camera out in town, they know what you're about. That said, I enjoyed your telling of the story - it's a very heavy one to mentally digest.

A man with nothing but his insane drive that he did not fully understand. A man who probably knew nothing about love but knew he was empty inside. The town is quiet and peaceful.
