If I was the Brigadier running this attack this is what i will do: first the group of camberras splitted in two. One north and one south same alttitude like the video. 2nd A-4 and Dagger First low level flying to dificult the detection. They will bomb the early warning radars. 2nd wave Mirage III air to air. Low alttitude the first part and then climb to gain aerial superiority. In the war we recibed mirage 5 from Perú but I think this was after the invasion. A-4Q from ara 25 de mayo can help with A/A too. Shafkirs 2 were recibed with daggers. Use it.

The Argentines wouldn't have had radar-guided missiles. Only heat-seekers since their IAI Daggers didn't have radars being a Mirage V derivative. The British had an advantage in radar for their aircraft and their ships while the Argentines were operating far from their bases and largely without radar direction.

Read once that if UK was attacked during the cold war & there were large first strike losses RAF tornado fighters would use their radars to lead Hawk advanced trainers armed with with sidewinders onto strikes by enemy bombers & escorts. I realise these aircraft are not available in DCs but I'm sure you could rustle up a schenario. Tornado must survive as it's needed , pilots are needed and should survive if they can.

The Phantom has twice the speed and more than twice the thrust of an A4, ( 17,844lbf for the Phantom vs 8000lbf for the A4), combined with the all aspect ratio of the sidewinders, the result was pretty much accurate. The prefixes in the name of the aircraft, F and A also give it away, the modern equivalent would be the F15 vs the A10 where nobody would think such a one sided result would be weird. The Mirages I did expect to do better, but there the missile let them down and probably the jamming from the Canberra's effected the radars of the Mirages and the A4's as well leaving only the F4's all aspect Sidewinders the only effective missile in that combat.

Back in 1975 the Commander of the R.A.F. (whose name I can't remember right now and I don't feel like looking it up) pushed really hard for the RAF to buy the F-14 to replace their aging Phantoms. Of course it didn't happen because of cost but just imagine for a second if instead of Phantoms the RAF had a squadron of Tomcats available with a full compliment of Phoenix missiles. Even with just four Phoenix and two Sidewinders could the Argentines have stood much of a chance?

I have a scenario I would love to see on the channel! Here’s the situation: Seeking to start a proxy war China has "gifted" 48 Chengdu J10s carrying the PL-15 to Argentina to launch an attack. This supplements 12 A4s that will be used to bomb the radar stations and runway at Mount Pleasant. The Argentines will attack with the goal of air superiority and destroying key infrastructure. The Brits have 2 days notice and have scrambled a squadron of 12 Typhoons to supplement the 4 already at Mount Pleasant. A type 26 frigate on patrol is also able to make it in time and places itself between the islands to provide air defence for the radar stations etc. As it happens the UK carrier group is also on deployment in the US carrying 18-24 F35s, these are to join later from the North and will be at the edge of their operational range to make it in time. Something different I suppose, you could tweak the numbers to make it more fair for either side but I’m not sure how it would play out.

I don't think the Argentine fighters should not have done so badly. My impression is the AIM-7 was doing better than it should. Historically the AIM-7 was very frustrating system to use. Also I don't think the AI flys that well. Just look at how well Simba did in the A-4 vs the AI. I think If you had more real humans flying it would be much different. The Argentine pilots in reality were well trained and had high moral. They did not make many mistakes. The British pilots as well were top pilots too. I don't think AI can represent a fight between two seriously competent and motivated advisories.

The AI was literally set at ace on both sides, as you suggested in your comment. As for AIM-7 performance, there were a lot of misses in the scenario. The Aim-7 itself wasn't terrible per se (for the time) Just had to know how to use it and the maintenance was a nightmare (landings ratttled them and they'd be "off" if not maintained long term) That's not in the scenario so... they work "as advertised." The F-4's just had a lot more and better missiles. An F-4's had 8 BETTER missiles compared to 4 (mostly magics) on the Mirages and compared to the A-4's it's 8 modern missiles vs 2 Aim-9Bs. Yes the Argentinians started off with a 3.5:1 advantage on paper, but the bombers and A-4s (and daggers) weren't a factor at first so the first wave it was 18 v 15 and the missiles made that a bloodbath. The daggers and bombers had no defense... so don't count. The A-4s had just two old sidewinders. So really it was 15 real fighters (Mirages) and 31 ad-hoc "fighters" (A-4s) at best vs 18 of the top of the line fighters at the time. It's not REALLY that shocking once you realize that the Argentinians didn't have the numbers to overcome the inferior equipment. It was also the way the RAF phantoms were able to take them on piecemeal. Once the Mirages were overwhelmed....nothing really had a chance to shoot back effectively. It was a turkey shoot. The only chance the Argentinians had was for the first 15 Mirages to close quickly and get a few kills in the first wave.

AIM7F was not a Skyflash equivalent, AIM7M was. The monopulse seeker on the Skyflash combined with the AWG-10 radar used by all British Phantoms give the RAF a lookdown shootdown capability in 1978. With just the AIM7F, fox 1 shots would have been much less effective against very low flying targets (as the ARG air force historically did) owing to clutter and target glint being fairly big problems for the conical scan seeker on the AIM7F.

OK... I know this is just a video... But: 1) Mirage III were capable of using 550s and 530s, but not at the same time if they wanted to come back to Argentina. 2) A huge factor here was HUMANS being on only one side. 3) the lógic way to attack Malvinas would have been a couple Daggers doing what they did in this video, so they rest could attack the next day in a surprise attack (like we did, fly low and fast to get closer) 4) IF you want to stage a massive attack (like you did) for entertainement reasosn: A-4s should have been there first, so they could let mirage attack british aircraft while they manouver against A-4s. In this video there was TO MUCH TIME between Mirage and A-4s. PS: correct me if i'm wrong... but it looks really UNREALISTIC to have all 18 F-4s loaded and ready to scrumble 100% of the time... That goes for every video you make... Add more time between the first and the last aircrafts to scrumble.

I don't know much about the Argentine planes but the Phantom's kinematic superiority would make it very difficult to get aspect within range. It's hard to get within two miles, rear aspect, on someone who's much faster than you, so as long as the Phantoms fly smart and keep their energy they're almost untouchable. By contrast, 10 mile all-aspect AIM-9L can kill almost anything. Having said all that, AI is dumb and won't fly tactically. Does DCS AI even take rear-aspect limitations into account? You could try some human-only fights with let's say 2 Phantoms vs 4 Mirage or A-4, see what happens.

The problem I see is the configuration of the strike packages. The first wave should have been the daggers to take the radars so that the defenders cant track the rest. These should be followed by all mirage III in CAP mode, followed by the skyhawks escorting the bombers.
@adrianpaz472
@adrianpaz472 10 ай бұрын
The skyhawks in air to air mode made no sense in having them at the back. If they are not good in air to air, they at least would have been useful in distracting the F4s from engaging the bombers.
@adrianpaz472
@adrianpaz472 10 ай бұрын
Also, the bombers and their skyhawk escorts should not be going as a single group or that would allow the F4 to gang up on them.

I think the Argies would have been more successful with A4s coming in low time on target with the Mirages coming in high, and the Canberra sneaking around the end while everyone was busy. The only way this was going to work was if the Brits had too many targets to shoot at.

Why did you make the A4 as fighters and the Mirages as bombers? Shouldnt it be around the other way? #itsrainingArgiemen

A carrier group with Phantoms & Buccaneers would have probably won the war a fair bit faster than the Harriers did. However, the decision to retire & transfer them to the RAF is probably one of the deciding factors for the Argentines to invade

Cap, I humbly propose an alternate defensive strategy. Diesel fighters continuously orbit the islands, laying down protective smoke screen. Argentine forces cannot find the islands, invasion thwarted???

A4s are totally out powered by the F4, just can't get into position to use their weapons. F4 acm tactics were honed in Vietnam where US pilots well and truly had to figure out how to deal with smaller more agile though less powerful foes.

I doubt it could have, the British wouldn't have been able to attack until it was to late to stop it. When the British submarine attacked the Argentinean battleship the Authority had to go all the way to British government to approve

A potential real life scenario. Russia retaliates against US for Ukraine support by launching attack against ALASKA pipeline. US has 2 f22s on patrol, and 12 more F22s tht scramble from Elmendorf AFB, supported by pair of Canadian F18s. Russia has 12 bear bombers, 12 backfires, 24 F31. Russian targets are Elmendorf AFB, and 3 points on pipline, they must destroy 2. US does not know which are targets.

Now that we had a USAF F4 squadron defend Falklands for the British... (We have to adapt the roleplay to what we got) The next question is, what would a similar Soviet detachment do defending the Falklands for the brits?

I would not want to be ANY Attacking Force against 18 RAF F4s. UK pilots probably outclassed Argies in Training, Time, Experience. F4, Skyflash, and AIML superior. And the edge to UK for defending territory. Argies would be scared/concerned about going up against UK too.
