Finnish person here 👋. It's so nice to see you trying out our home corners. First, about the history... of course we had war with Soviet Union and a lot of air combats, recon and bombing missions during that time but not any major battles that you might think of. Unless you want to reenact the sinking of the Tirpitz which happened in Tromssa Norway. But today the focus of war games is just in this area. We know that Murmansk is an important naval base for both Russian northern fleet and their submarines. They are very close to Finnish and Norwegian borders and some missions in possible scenario would happen in this area. There is also Russian army base of Alakurtti few hundred kilometers south from Murmansk, I didn't see it in the map. Also Plesetsk space center and their ICBM silos are a bit east from Arkangel, but I don't think that the map extends that far. Experts also speculate that Russia may test the 5th amendment of Nato agreement in this northern area by invading Finland in Lapland (feel free to try 👊) where Swedish and Norwegian armed forced would be first involved with their Gripens and F-35's (Norway). There are few ideas what you may want to test. Whatever is your health issue, Cap, I wish you all the best and quick recovery.

Bodø Main Airforce Base is historicaly Northern NATO’s largest airbase, at the most durring the cold war, Norway had 2 fighter Squadrons, 1 SAR squadron and 1 transport squadron stationed there, also it used to contain Norway’s main QRF for scrambling fighters. Lots of cold-war history in the area. Also the airbase where Francis Gary Powers was supposed to land his U2 at when he got shot down over the Sovietunion in 1960. Later the base was used by SR-71s.

The road bases in Sweden are everywhere. During the cold war the swedes converted a few roads to runways to use viggens if a surprise attack were to happen and airbases were destroyed. They could take off and land from roads, that's why the viggen has canards and reverse thrust, to be able to make those short take offs and landing.

Finland is known as the Country of a thousand lakes. Finland does not really have any tall mountains. In fact, a funny fact is that: in 2017 when Finland celebrated 100 years of independence, the government of Norway wanted to gift Finland a mountain. There was however some legal issues, so the the present was determined to not be a possibility. edit: The tallest peak in the Scandinavian Mountains, is located in Norway. It's 2,469 metres (8,100 ft) high. The tallest peak in Sweden is 2,104 m (6,903 ft). The tallest peak in Finland is 1,324 m (4,344 ft).

Of these 309 are bigger than 10 square km and eight bigger than 500 square km. The biggest, the Suur-Saima lake system, is about 4400 square km and the fourth-largest natural freshwater lake in Europe. The survey was completed in the 1990’s by paying a group of students to count all lakes from general survey maps by hand. The same survey showed that Finland also has got 178,947 island bigger than 100 square meters and 75,818 bigger than 0,5 square km.

The swedish city just north west of your take off, is Kiruna. It was for some time the largest city in the world, area wise... and due to the massive iron ore mine located there causing cracks and movements in the bedrock, they decided to move the entire town "a bit over to the right". A move which is now starting to be completed. This was also source of iron, which the military lead by the man with a funny mustage, was so keen on. Not the most glorious of moments in swedish history, but I think it turned out as it should have. All things considered.

Many of the 🇸🇪 mines ship to 🇳🇴 ports, which are much closer than their own. This led to otherwise small town's in WWII becoming strategic assets, hence targets.

@@corvanphoenix The Swedish ports are downhill all the way from the mines and the trains don't have to cross the highest parts of the mountains. On the third hand the Swedish ports are about as far up the Baltic Sea as you can get, while the Norwegian ports are straight on the Atlantic. Summa summarum: you're right. Bodø Airbase used to house two squadrons of F-16s until a few years ago. Norway got its first F-35As in 2017 based at Ørland and the Bodø Airbase more or less ceased operations when RNoAF retired its fleet of F-16s in january 2022. Our F-16s are being transferred to Romania and Ukraine while F-35 operate from Ørland main air base west of Trondheim and a forward QRA base up north, at Evenes. Bodø always was a combined civilian and military airport and was of huge importance during the cold war. When Francis Gary Powers in his U2 was shot down over Russia his destination was Bodø. The airport will actually be demolished in a few years as there will be constructed a new civilian airport a mile to the southwest. Sadly, the proud Airbase in Bodø will be buried under an expanding city and most of the shelters and military fascilities as well. Bodø has huge underground caves as hangars used to house cold war jets back in the days. DCS will have to map a new airport in a few years.

No big, long/linear, ingress-path-allowing terrain.... tough to dodge the S400s the Motherland? b) Finland - Where are the large outdoor Metal Concert Arenas? Have they modeled Tampere? And is the statue to Sibelius modeled? Even at 30,000 ft you should hear a brain-rattling chug. c) Sabaton ... INSTEAD of a Swedish Statue of some cringey 8th century king, PERHAPS DCS could model a Sabaton concert venue....complete with a knee-slapping Joachim. .. maybe the tank on their stage can go active and launch Stingers when least expected? There are pre-rendered Sabaton animations they could plug in, straight from the Sabaton History YT channel. Speaking of Sabaton, perhaps GR2 could do some WWI-fun recreating some of the Night Witch missions... show off yer mid-flight engine restart skills in the pitch black moonless night? Witchy Cackling during the bomb drops gets additional Intimidation Points. No? d) You want Green ? You need a map of the maritime PNW.... or maybe B.C. to avoid images of bombing the US. No huge statues here, but we do have 3 meter Sasquatches and proper mountain ranges and ravines and gorges and volcanoes to circle about. And the challenges of hugging the nap-of-the-earth with alternating clear cuts and 200 foot tall Douglas Firs and hemlocks and Port Orford cedars. (on the coast). You could even do a bunch of post Apocalyptic battle sims using defunct-and-overgrown bases like Camp Adair and Klamath Falls. We can also cause massive air-safety issues by having St Helens of Mt Baker belch a few cubic miles of ash into the air...nothing abraids compressor turbines like a bath in volcanic ash. Ooooo, you could set up one of those SundayFunday constrained airspaces shoot'em-outs entirely within the rim of Crater Lake. (Diameter = 6 miles, Circumference =20 miles, altitude about 7k ft at the top of the rim with the lake about 1000 feet below.) And then, at the end of scheduled time, we can have Mazama blow it's top, again... the next best thing to Yellowstone, so they say. /Oregon Tourist Bureau.
