Great video! But, I need to make one huge correction: DCS World is certainly NOT an “empty shell”. It includes a large and recently updated Caucasus map, an Su-25T Russian attack jet and a TF-51D Mustang. All for free. These allow new players to first try DCS World without paying a cent and see how their hardware handles it. Also, the MIN SPEC is based on the default LOW preset and plays quite well.

Cap, you stated there is little use for “Replay” mode. I find it valuable in training. I fast forward to a point where something, like a landing approach for example, went bad. From that point, I retake control, make my corrections and try it again from there.

I started playing DCS because I… was an empty shell. Every time I played a game I always felt bad for the time lost in game and not outside the house. But with DCS it’s like the essentials of being a man. You cannot feel empty after becoming better day after day playing. I never was ending a session in DCS and felt bad about it. Even the fact that you have to learn a LOT to fly your first plane (or helicopter) makes it even more rewarding. The fact that you know that what is there in front of you it’s a real fidelity model of an military airplane makes it even more rewarding if you think that not so much time ago, everything about those models was classified. And the last surprise that this game gave me was the ability to use my joysticks. I don’t know why, must be my fortune or lack of, but everything that I want to achieve is more difficult to me. My first hotas was a thrustmaster warthog, then I bought a vkb ultimate. And those didn’t work in other games and I spent literally days reading the forums and watching videos. I had more luck with a thrustmaster x, the cheesier of them all. But DCS is so damn perfect that everything worked from the start, no hassle at all. Sometimes I felt bad for not having a wife, a family, but now all changed. After 140 games bought on Steam, I abandoned them all….DCS is all I need

Literally just bought a 1200 dollar PC just for DCS. My first computer at 19 years old. I couldn’t give less of a crap ab video games but DCS just seems like a game I can kill time and enjoy some kills. I’m also an F-16 crew chief so I’m sure it wouldn’t hurt familiarizing with the job

Theres also a DCS World Steam Edition - obviously on steam. Can you tell me if it's the "same" as the DCS World 2.5 from the Website or if i will have any disadvantage if i use the Steam Edition?

Advantages of using steam is that you get automatic updates, but if you don't use steam version and use the standalone version (version that he is presenting in the video from THEIR site, not steam), you will most likely get more sales on modules (modules are the addon aircraft such as extra maps, extra missions/campaigns, and extra aircraft such as F/A-18, F-14B, A-10, etc. Modules bought from the standalone version are NOT compatible with the steam version, and if you buy from steam you only get sales on modules when steam has their big sales such as the steam summer sale, etc. But the base price (non sale) for modules is the same for both versions, for example the F/A-18C (as of June 2021) is $80 USD. TL;DR: If you buy from steam you get the same game, but with automatic updates, but you won't get as many sales on different aircraft/maps/campaigns/etc, if you buy standalone you get more sales, same game as steam, but no automatic updates.

Thank you for putting this video together sir. My 8yr old son and I struggle with moderation when it comes to watching the Reapers. I am not a "computer guy" at all and it is a bit intimidating in terms of where to start. I determined it would be wise to dedicate a machine specifically to run DCS and with this video as a guide Ive been researching materials to put together a machine. Paul Hughes yes, but that means you got to make the 3 point tracker thing and get a webcam, but for £40 you can get a webcam with a mount and a high quality 3D printed thing that goes on your headset and it uses a customized version of open track which makes it easier for trackhat

*** I always suggest to backup your DCS on another external drive because downloading XX Gigs after a loss of data isn't fun. Also handy if you move your data to another computer. :)

I will have to wait until I upgrade my computer though - a six-year-old laptop just won't cut it with those heavy system requirements. Also, at 12:14 the word Mjolnir (pronounced "me-YOL-near") is the hammer of Thor in Norse mythology.

Hey Cap, as usual a good and very informative video, which should come in especially helpful for those new to these sim / simming niche. I was kind of hoping for a Chuck's Guides reference in the section about aircraft setup though, as these guides and the videos that you guys (GrimReapers) put out so diligently are IMHO the best ways to get familiar with (new) aircraft. However, they are naturally not exclusive to one another and I think having the information available on seperate media (eg a nice GR video as well as a crisp guide by Chuck) does wonders for the DCS module learning process, especially if you can cross-reference the 2. Any thoughs?

good video cap, I would love a vid on proper radio communication, IE how to request landing, bogey dope, general communication, that type of stuff. I have around 100 hours in the game and still don't know how to communicate well, which has been sorta keeping me from multiplayer, and there arent a lot of resources on comms so it's hard to learn. thanks!

I'm awaiting Christmas for joystick etc. I probably won't get Trackir until my birthday in February. Regardless I'm immersing myself in as much DCS stuff as I can in the meantime . The tough part is tearing myself away from your fun videos for the serious stuff. The one positive is I built the PC myself and he's more than adequate. Still, I'm slowly learning stuff. Yup. start with the Flaming Cliffs plane(s): F-15, su-27, A-10A from the main menu you can access the training missions for them which will teach you most things. Good luck.

I have a problem with DCS, it doesn't work. when it says press page up and page down to take off or use the joystick (I have a joystick) it doesn't work. I press it but nothing happens. I have the DCS world Steam edition and my joystick is extreme 3d pro. I don't think that the joystick is the problem because I already tried DCS before with keyboard and it didn't work. Hello Cap question if im hosting a server for friends on the Open Beta or 2.5 can they join direct on either version or what. Iv been looking online I cant seem to find an answear. We have connection issues were it keeps saying server offline. No idea why I have it allowed on my firewall the correct port is open and its in the allowed list on my anti virus yet still we get issues.

Cant get this starter thing in the first tutorial to move lol i pressed the combo it told me to to start the engine and its acting like i started the engine and moved on but i go to external view and they sure dont look like theyre running. Theres a comment below saying gotta wait till you see your fuel gauge turning up... Where precisely is the fuel gauge? What does it look like? The game says theres two pins with two lights, i aint got a clue where im supposed to be looking. Was gonna buy a couple modules for this game in summer steam sale today but thought id atleast try the free part first. Cant get past first part of first tutorial. Is there a screen shot of the hud somewhere that will tell me what everything im looking at is actually for?

In your DCS install folder you can navigate to \Mods\Aircraft. Then choose the folder of the aircraft you want to learn and open \Doc. In there you'll find a user manual for the plane. Alternatively you can download the manuals from their website.

VSYNC is going to depend on if your monitor. If your graphics card out preforms your monitor leave it off, but if you have a fast monitor you should turn it on to keep your graphics card and monitor equal. You will lose frames so I would recommend a graphics card update.

V SYNC CAUSES A LARGE DROP IN PERFORMANCE. While it might eliminate some screen tearing, it will cause you to run at a lower frame rate. Do not use it if you have a monitor with g sync or free sync, and it should be the first thing that you turn off if you are looking for a higher frame rate

have you updated your DCS lately? I can tell you that a new update for the Harrier comes out tomorrow. Should be corrected then.

Thanks for the reply! Every time i run DCS it looks for an update and also says its up to date, I've also just gone into the windows menu and run the update. It says up to date. I noticed the 2.5.1 is the beta version so im now guessing if i want it updated i need to download the beta version rather than the standard 2.5 or i can wait until tomorrow if theres another update.
