The F-35 and F-22 were designed for different mission sets. The 35 has less internal stores, built in TGP, and it’s very good at CCC. But it’s designed to take out enemy air defenses in stealth and then place external pylons with A2G stores and take out other ground targets. Because of its integrated sensors it’ll make any friendly forces far more lethal so it’ll linger in the air space and start CCC for the area.

Yeah, regarding the balloon, F-22 along with F-15 are the only current US fighters that can reach 60,000 feet. Also I imagine with it's thrust vectoring the Raptor especially comes in handy given how wide the turning radius would be at that altitude, due to the air being so thin at 60k feet, I imagine even normally quite maneuverable aircraft would start to feel like bricks
@istvanbarta
@istvanbarta Жыл бұрын
also, they didn't know the real purpose of the balloon, it could be a harmless loose meteorology balloon or a tricky attack with unknown devices onboard and stealth became handy against it

Worked on the F-22 for 7 years. This was the Second balloon kill, First A/A Kill, and i was sitting under the wing for the first one. I was working at Hot Pits (refueling on the ground while the aircraft is running) at Langley AFB in 2009, and a Mylar balloon from the BX, started to float over the west ramp. I was under the left wing when I heard my A man call out “uhhh.. we have a balloon coming.” I peeked under the flaps, and sure enough it was about 20-30 feet in the air, floating toward one of the other jets. Pilot calls “surfaces clear” and I tucked in deep under the wing, you didn’t want your head anywhere near a moving flap and/or horizontal stab. “Clear.” I called while I’m kneeling and keeping myself grounded on refueling attachment. He tilted the stick back and pointed the thrust up at the balloon, which went immediately from a limp, crumply thing to a taut ball, apparently the jet exhaust made it expand fully and leak more air, because this time it floated a good 150 feet into the air, and landed in the grass next to the runway, where our Hot Pit Super picked it up. We all joked and called it a ground to air kill on a balloon, but when it comes down to it, we saved aircraft from a lot of time consuming and expensive maintenance.

@@flare242 the engines would have to be removed and subjected to an inspection after any object of significance is injested on the ramp. . While balloons, and other small objects like string might seem like it would be harmless for a jet engine to intake, damaging the compressor blades can cause major damage that can manifest itself during flight. Another little story, Back in the early EARLY days of youtube, in 2006, I was out in Korea and two... enterprising crew chiefs... thought it would be funny to make a video for youtube of them trying to throw a frog into the intake of an F-16. The video was quickly removed, and the entire Wolf Pack was on a War day the next morning. As for what happened to the crew chiefs, more than likely they were courts marshalled

There's another DCS youtuber I watch from time to time called GrowlingSidewinder (sorry Drewski), and he would turn off the radar in the F-22 and would sneak up on people. They never saw him coming until he was in formation with them. There was one kill he got from sheer panic. The player was so terrified when he finally saw him, that he went into aerobatics and smashed into the ground. It was hilarious. 😂

I've always loved the F-22, I've gotten to see them flying in real life a few times at airshows and it's amazing how loud and fast they are. I even knew a guy who's twin was a pilot in the Air Force and flew them and he said it was the best experience of his life. My boss is a former air force pilot, he confirmed the reason they used the F-22 is because it is the only fighter in the US inventory capable of flying combat maneuvers at the altitude that balloon was at. Cool fact, they couldn't use radar or infrared seekers to track the balloon since it gave off no heat and was invisible to radar, so the pilot had to manually aim his sidewinder via the bore sight with the seeker head turned off to hit the balloon, basically like an unguided rocket. That fighter squadron already has patches made up with a popped balloon and Winnie the Pooh on it with the words Float Around and Find Out around the perimeter.

For reference, the Su-57 has an RCS of 1m². The J-20 is 0.1m². The F-117 is 0.001m². The F-22 has a smaller RCS than the F-117, reported by LockMart as being 0.0001m² from certain angles. Likely the reason you were able to see the F-22 for a little bit with the MiG-21's radar is low frequency radars are able to see stealth aircraft still, but they're susceptible to clutter and aren't very precise.

your DCS F/A-18C is a Lot 20, which means it's the latest and greatest of all the Charlies, it's from the early 2000s, last batch before the US Navy switched to Rhinos.. At least that was the initial reasoning from ED when ppl asked for ILS rather than ICLS etc.. "We are modelling a specific model, US Navy Lot 20, and as such it does not have ILS".. i mean later on they changed their narrative a bit when they released the LITENING Pod rather than ATFLIR first (specifically a Spanish Charlie Hornet LITENING, coincidentally after announcing the Viper, which also can carry a LITENING pod?).. So yea, while we have a Spanish LITENING, we still don't have ILS.. I'm not sure if it's still supposed to be a Lot 20 Charlie tbh, but at least that's what it initially supposed to be (and majority of systems probably still reflect that).

Honestly, F15's were on station as well, so there was no reason to not just use an F-15. I 100% believe the F-22's looming retirement was on their minds when they chose to use it for the balloon.

By watching Growling Sidewinder's F-22 voyages I think you should be quite easily able to smoke those Sukhois without much of a struggle in BVR :D You have stealth, you have range, you have TWS. They should be sitting ducks.

When I was a kid, in like 2004ish an F-22 would do transonic flights over my house every once in a while. I think they were coming from Arnold Air Force Base. At the time I thought the sonic booms were pretty annoying, but as I've gotten more into aviation I look back at it pretty fondly.
@SymeonPhronema
@SymeonPhronema Жыл бұрын
Highly unlikely it was breaking the sound barrier over your house. USAF jets aren't allowed to do that as it can cause damage to windows, etc. Chances are it was just loud as the F-22 and F-35 are extremely loud. Edit: The only times they are allowed to break the sound barrier over land would be in an emergency situation, and when they have very specific authorization from a higher ranking officer to do so. Also, when training over water they're allowed to do it, and no authorization is required over water.
@digigeek19

@@SymeonPhronema I agree they weren't likely intending to hit mach, but it was 2000 and some hotshot pilots were probably willing to get closer to that line than they ought to. I'm pretty sure they were real sonic booms though. Usually when the jets went over head it would be like very nearby rolling thunder, slowly fading away into the distance, occasionally though there would also be a massive boom that was just over in an instant, like a shot from a rifle.

We do use the f22 for homeland patrol. That's their primary function. So it makes sense to use them. They also have super cruise so they can cover more ground quickly without using as much fuel.

So, here's an obscurity that most people don't realize about the MiG-21. It's radar isn't a "true" radar in the sense that other planes in DCS have. It's essentially a modified laser tracking system from another module re-coded to function like a radar. I can almost guarantee that's why you were able to get a lock so easily on the F-22. You can test this for yourself, as one of the side effects of having a radar like that is that it will trip laser warning receivers like on the Ka-50 if you lock them up.

Supposedly f22 RCS is equivalent to a metal marble, f35 RCS metal golf ball. Who knows if that’s true, but either way they should both be very hard to detect. f35 should have a massive advantage in situational awareness though.
