Next time you do this, you should impose a rule that every round you MUST choose a plane that you haven't used yet in the competition. So save your good planes for later.

I like the idea but as other said not everyone has the same module. I say make a separate event where those with the modules are able to do this. Or possibly do one where it’s only FC3 aircraft, as that’s the most commonly owned pack of aircraft.

In real life the highest wind speed I have ever seen a landing at was in the North Sea, just north of Germany. The carrier was doing 30 knots into a 40 knot wind. That's 70 knots of free airspeed. I saw an S-3 Viking damn near float in for the deck. Same with the E-3 Hawkeyes. The heavier aircraft even did well. The issue was with the rescue chopper. He wasn't having it at all. They cancelled flight ops early because if you don't have a rescue bird aloft, you don't fly.

In my experience on USS Kitty Hawk (1969-1972), anything more than 15-20 degrees off the runway, the ship would change course. I spent a lot of time on the bridge during flight ops as electronics repairman, and never saw a crosswind of more than 15 degrees.

I've never played this simulator, but the one I did play. It took me awhile before I started landing every single time. Carrier landing is not easy. My biological father got to meet his son after 30+ years. He worked for the Navy. While there my biological father was able to fly an F-18. The pilot allowed him to land on the carrier. He was waved off and then the pilot took over. Imagine what it would feel like if anyone here had the chance to actually have a go at landing on a carrier.

Many, many years ago I flew sailplanes for several years. Where I'd fly would get pretty strong crosswinds on days there was mountain wave - great soaring...sucky takeoff and landing. Anyways, cross controlling like crazy to not weathervane until takeoff, then crabbing 30 degrees to hold proper runway centerline position until the tow plane can take off was always fun, then once Tow 1 was up, drifting over to be in proper high-tow on their CL and watching us be pointing about 30 degrees off runway CL while climbing out holding the CL. Then, once up in the wave at 10 to 12k ASL, slowing down to 50-60 knots indicated and watching yourself crawl backwards was super fun. For landing, they'd keep part of the ramp clear as a "crosswind" landing strip. You'd turn from the downwind about 120 degrees right onto the designated area, in lieu of a 90 to base and 90 more for final. The ground effect on a glider is pretty impressive and with a 25 knot wind I think the landing roll was about.....10 feet. Anyways...some of the fun I had over a couple years, 80 ish hours and about 120 logged takeoffs and landings. Fun times in a glider....and fun times watching the landings here, especially those crosswind ones. And Cap....your commentary is freaking hilarious.

Could you try to do a series on the Tom Clancy books? There are a few battle sequences that I would consider very accurate, but that have never really been tested. The carrier strike in “Red Storm Rising”, and the A-10’s buzzing the Kirov in “Hunt For Red October”, might be an interesting place to start!

Anyone know the real world explanation of why landing short manages to miss the wires further down the deck? Is it too hard to make the hook not bounce and it just goes over them? Or does the wire hitting too high on the hook throw things out of wack? Something else?
@dvdraymond
@dvdraymond 2 жыл бұрын
I believe you're right that it's too hard to get it to not bounce. I vaguely recall hearing though that the aircraft designers tune the design of the hook so that the frequency of the bouncing isn't the same as the frequency you go past the wires. So that if it does bounce over one wire it's more likely to come down in the right place to catch the next one and not just neatly bounce over all 4 in turn. Though it's still possible to miss them all if you land early.
