Grimsmo Norseman Pt 1: A new era in knifemaking?

Comparing a Norseman directly to any other custom or midtech knife is unfair, and damn near impossible... as I have now learned. I ended up taking an unexpected journey here, which is why we ended up with a two-part review instead of only one. I didn't see that coming either....

Thanks for the great, honest review Jim! I'll get to part 2 tomorrow night but wanted to comment on the finish of the lockside and the clip. Green is the biggest pain in the ass to anodize. At least for me. Still is, I have 2 sitting around waiting for a blasting because the high voltage burned the shit out of them. On yours I dipped the handles and clip in muli-etch for a bit hoping the green would really pop, but it ended up being uneven and the clip got pitted. We reluctantly deemed it was good to ship because trying again may have turned out the same or worse. I'm glad you're enjoying it though!

Thanks for the feedback Erik. It would have been easy to say "Yep, it was done for artistic purposes" but you didn't BS about it... and I'm impressed with your explanation! Thanks for watching, I think you'll like part 2 more lol.

How can you even bring yourself to sell something that you yourself thinks isn't up to scratch? You should of either re-done it or scrapped it. What a disgusting attitude for someone running a business selling products. If I received a knife and something was wrong with it i would get a refund right away.

+SE FullmetalJake you clearly don't buy many custom knives (or other custom products).
@SEFullmetalJake

+Jim Skelton yup clearly not. He admitted himself that the coating wasn't done well but still has the cheek to sell it. I've seen on another video there being a chip of brass out of a handle of one of his knives" there's a little bit missing, I may be able to do something with it but it could be okay anyway" who the hells wants a knife sub standard at that price? If you're buying something it should be perfect. You're saying I don't buy anything custom? I'm having a custom Banjo being made from Griffin Banjos, the guy rang me up and said that there is a little sap inlay on the back of the neck. " you can decline it if you like but if not, you will be getting a discount". This is even from my own wood that I supplied him. A complete difference in craftsmenship and greed here.

My friend has a Norseman and he asked if I could help him clean it because he didn't have a torx set. I like how easily they come apart and are put back together with no problems at all. Great build quality as well. I do find his blade shapes weird but that's definitely not a knock on the maker.

I'm in love with that thing and cannot get enough of the reviews... screw a sebenza I want a norseman hands down. I will own one before I die and I will become an heirloom for my son.

Part one was good Jim, and congrats too! No Jake Hoback comparisons or Dave Curtiss? PS. They had a little grinder they used for deburring...go to the 2min mark of the video. Knifemaking Tuesdays Week 77 - Grinder Part 4 DONE! If you look inside your Norseman you will see a very large Norseman head inside as well as the date it was made. Did you try the windex trick to get the color on the clip to match up better? I'm not a big fan of electro ano. Also they are planning to make an integral but it will be small, I want the XL Norseman integral with a real finger toil and a oversized pocket clip skeletonized Norseman head, helmet and beard.

Looks to me like the blade is centered, but the sharpening on the tip is slightly asymmetrical, which puts the tip a bit off center. The full CNC thing has never bothered me. I think there's skill and art in both grinding and programming. They're just different skill sets. What's really impressive is when someone can do both masterfully (Tighe). The draw of a custom knife, for me, is (to a great degree) the custom part, the attention to detail, and (to a lesser degree) the method of construction.

Actually the cryo-heat treat to the blades warps the last 1/3 of the blades so they straighten them. I think that is what it is, and because the frame is so tight you can see .002" is what they shoot for. Same on my blade #086.
@VeritasNous
@VeritasNous 10 жыл бұрын
Yeah. I've seen the video of them straightening the blades, and warping during heat treat is common enough, but it does appear that the tip is off center because of sharpening asymmetry. At any rate, I could be seeing it wrong.

I wasnt a big fan of the dodo beek blade shape but after watching the grimsmo vids and loving what they were doing I had to have one. Being the proud new owner of #019 I can say this, the blade shape works. One of the things I love to do when I pull a knife off the wicked edge is to open envelopes. There is something satisfying about slicing an envelope open when the knife is that sharp but the norseman shape kinda sucks at it. I actually prefer his old logo and the exposed clip screws on his first run knives. They are getting better at straightening their blades but mine is pretty warped. This green one would look awesome with polished flats, edges and clip btw. You should have a pimper or maybe if John would be willing to do it. Great vid Jim! Thanks.

"I don't think they can be directly compared" is a really nice way to say what is obvious when you put the two knives together. The totally machined method certainly has some pros, like mass production and thus lower cost, and he is fairly creative within the limits of a machined knife... But pretty much every knife you pulled out to compare blew the basic machine stamp out of the water. At least from my perspective as a "non knife guy".

Revisiting this classic... such a revolutionary blade shape and style, the tapered middle with a bellied almost chisel tanto. So revolutionary, however, that I think the handle really takes away from it in my eyes. It almost feels like they just thought of this blade, knew it was absolute gold, and threw a handle on and got to production. I may be wrong, but it feels like the handle profile just doesn't compliment or go with the blade very well... That's the only thing about this knife that I wish was better (other than RWL-34!) Would love to get my hands on a norseman one of these days, I've got enough of marfione!

I would be more interesting to hear a fellow CNC operator give his opinion on the tolerances of the knife. Otherwise, I feel it's just another way over priced production knife being pushed off as a custom. The honey comb, blade shape,no steel insert lock bar, and off centered blade is a deal breaker for me. If I were to buy a production, I would opted for a Chris Reeves which I still do not own.

Programming is skilled. Setting things up and proving those programs, fine tuning them, is skilled. Pushing a button and popping out parts, is not. (Though, there are some parts to make where it does take someone skilled just to push the button and make sure it comes out right) If you can make a program and set it up such t hat an idiot off the street can come and make good parts, that means you are excellent at your trade
@unitedgray
@unitedgray 9 жыл бұрын
sam n He definitely makes a nice product, but his CNC skills aren't very impressive. Those little CNC's are really easy to program, and the profiles he does are just repetitive patterns. There's still a lot that he needs to learn about properly finishing his parts in the CNC and not relying so much on sanding belts and grinders. If done properly, his parts could come off the CNC and only require polishing with a light abrasive and a polishing wheel.
@jayjo448
@jayjo448 9 жыл бұрын
unitedgray Little CNC is no different than a big CNC to program. He makes them nicely, fairly quickly, where's the program? He doesn't have to be able to program a 3D part on an 8 axis machine for what he does. I imagine they do most of the finishing while the machines are running. That way you're busy and so are the machines. Having the machines run longer to also do finishing on what needs it, while you sit on your ass, means less parts. And you'll still have to do a bit of finishing by hand anyway

Beautiful knife but way overpriced for a completely machine made knife. Only time hands touch during manufacture is to move it from machine to machine. Then hand assembled, sharpened by a random employee not John, and hand packaged. Knife still looks exactly the same 5 years later. Still honeycomb only. You don't even get to pick the color.

Thats pretty funny and it shows your lack of understanding what "real" machining is. Grismo, being an excellent CNC knifemaker that he is, couldn't make a single day working for Northrop Grumman, Glock, Rolex, Porsche, Nikon, Apple, or any other major corporation pumping out refined design products or mission critical gear that are made using CNC and advanced manufacturing. "wizard" is reserved for those who work with real world engineering, not man toys. I like Grismo and his work but he's no CNC wizard. Grismo is an artist with a knack for programming, technology, mechanical engineering, and design. I respect his craft but dislike his design tastes for the most part. I do wish I had his technical skills but then I have never seen him forge damascus by hand or stand behind a grinder for hours just to make one hand made knife. Remember, CNC made knives are just a program that can make 1 or 1000. Hand made is one of a kind.

When all is said and done this is a factory knife pure and simple, because it is completely CNC machined. Every factory knife should be this good but none that I know of are. Why? Because the makers care! Because they want it to be perfect and they know what a knife should be. They made the bearing design their way as they wanted less gap between the blade and frame. Well, every factory knife should be like that. This is the result of a two man operation in their garage. They don't have to answer to anybody except themselves. They have freedom to do it right. Yes the Blade is butt ugly and pivot needs to be bigger. That's why I watch Jim. Yes, he is always right. PRICE? This is a two hundred dollar knife with less than $50 in material cost. Somebody please correct me if you think I'm wrong on that point. With all that said, if the blade was more tastefully designed, I would buy the knife for $400. Why?... Because it gives me what I want! I won't pay $500 but the factories better listen up! Give us what we want! In the future, everyone will have their own CNC in their garage and their will be no factories.

This knife has around $100 of material cost in it. On top of that, there is machine time and the time it takes for them to fit and finish the knives. Yes most of the material reduction is done by machine, but that is why it isn't $800. I love what these guys do and I think that they should get a ton of credit for doing it as well as they do. Design is entirely subjective though, so I can't fault you for disliking it.

Glad you commented. I dispute your $100 claim for the cost of material to build this knife. It must be less by half if one can purchase knives with much thicker titanium and pretty good thicker D2 steel blades for $73.00 USD. These $73 knifes are CNC'd. And their are several styles of knives available to buy at that typical price. I'll gladly pay $400 if the knife gives us what we want as Jim said. We all need to remember that any CNC machine in the world will duplicate that knife parts if we put in the identical program to cut out the parts. The rest is in how it is assembled. I want to buy their knife. I only dislike the butt ugly blade!

Yeah. Those $73 knives are made in China where there is no labor cost. They also buy the materials straight from their manufacturer instead of through a middle man. They are doing heat treat and waterjetting on those in bulk too which also lowers the cost. In addition the hardware that the Grimsmo bros use is really nice. But the cost of materials isn't that important. I just wish they could make way more of them.

Yes, there is far less than $100 in materials in this knife.. and most any ti framelock with non-exotic blade steel. And yes, it is all CNC made, but.... material cost is almost never what makes a knife a certain price. It's all about time. Designing the knife. Many makers sketch, then make cutouts of the sketch (paper, plastic, etc). Those that work with the technology will render it in CAD which is very time consuming. Then they have to prototype, and for most all makers, regardless of how automated their system is... do it fully handmade. Then a tremendous amount of time writing the program for the CNC, which John does himself, he doesn't have someone else do that. Making custom plates and whatnot is also a factor. Hand fitting all the parts, deburring, fitting, and finishing. Setting the lock, carbidizing, straightening blades after HT/Cryo, And so much more. It's all about time, and as we know... time is money. As far as everyone having a CNC in their garage in the future, maybe, but there's a tremendous cost to buying a CNC that most makers simply cannot afford. Then the cost of operating one and maintaining one... again, very costly. Some of those damn end mills are as expensive as the custom knives they are helping to create.

Kudos to the guy for doing his own thing and figuring out how to machine a knife...but they're still ugly and those tooling marks on the blade? No thanks!

+Keith Krueger Good for you. Do you feel better now that you've torn someone else down so that you could make some sort of useless point on the internet? And guess what... I bet there's a lot of people who do far better than you at your job, but they don't need to run up to you and shout it in your face.

+Jim Skelton Actually wasn't knocking him (john Gimsmo) at all since he has an unmatched tenacious attitude toward quality and is such an artist at making his knives. I also won't take away from his Hard work he did researching and designing his product. My comment was directed at you and your thought that he was so brilliant in cnc.. By the way he only makes the plastic chases for his bearings Which i also think is a good idea so now he can custom make the ones he needs. His skill was makingknives on a machine that was more of a hobby machine. His cnc skills are no better than anyone coming out of a 2 year tech program couldn't match. The machines and software now make it so this so easily attainable. Yes many people can match my skills and have more than myself. Just saying watch some more videos you will see the amazing things being done. I work on tooling that needs to function like this 70 cycles a minute for months some for years and they are 3700 lbs. CNC machining is a fascinating trade i love watching videos like Grismo's and cringe many times at the things he did either from safety stand point or that he did things so backwards he wasted alot of time. he soon will realize that some things he doesn't do because he couldn't afford to he will soon realize he couldn't afford not to. (like us anti foaming agent in his new mori CNC) the fact that if he had gone to take a formal training course or a mentor who was in the trade helping him he would have been to this point long ago. I hope to see more people like him going out there and making a product and learn the skills. But other than that good review. Good Day

+Jim Skelton Your comments were perceived as depicting Grimsmo as legendary for essentially being a CNC manufacturer, which is as common as flies in today's world. Just as Keith said, his work is purely machining and its not revolutionary. No, I am not knocking Grimsmo. He produces brilliant pieces and is certainly great. In fact, I watch his videos frequently due to admiration. It amazes me how I often see the knife community overestimating modern manufacturing. Keith was addressing what any machinist (like myself) would. Again, not knocking grimsmo at all, but people should note that machining a simple knife is not even the tip of the iceberg of the capabilities of machining.

This is the ugliest, cheesiest looking custom knife I've ever seen, that blade looks like an elongated duck bill, that honeycomb pattern is so corny and that green colour just looks horrible. Love the videos though, great series!
