Dale, I was the one that you gave the grinder spindle at the Bash. I found out that spindle was for a Covell tool grinder. I started building an arbor for it, but it got put on the back burner for now, I had to get some work out for customers. I need to tear that spindle down and clean up the bearings. Also even though the spindle has a taper there is no draw bar so I need to figure out a way to lock the arbor in place. I didn’t think about relieving the center portion of the taper, I guess I probably should do that.

Great video! Greetings and salutations, from Western Kentucky. Princeton to be exact. Doing machine work and tool and die has long been a passion of mine. I should have never retired,... I DO miss my Bridgeport EVERY DAY!

I left tool & die making after my apprenticeship and have enjoyed my time but I do still wish for a Bridgeport and a Colchester Master every Christmas. I suspect they're too heavy for Santa, he is an old man after all.

Jonathan Tatler ... I have been wishing for a Bridgeport for many years myself. Taking up woodworking is just not the same. I keep telling myself... if I use a high helix end mill, or maybe some shaper tooling, I can do wonders with wood on a mill!! (all the while thinking of what I can make metalworking).

Hi there. I have been following you for a bit now. Not a mechanist so a lot of what you do and say is beyond me but interesting never the less. I am a bit mechanical and I guess that is where my interest comes from. I think at this point I am a bit old at 69 and not that interested to be starting out in metalwork. I do have a woodshop and am happy enough doing that. Formally of Newport Beach, CA and now in Longmont, CO.

I am a new hobby machinist, but O1 steel is a PITA till you find the sweet spot machining it. I found that deeper more aggressive feed cuts improves the surface and gets the swarf to chip instead of dangerous strands. This is with carbide inserts though.

I know that O-1 is less likely to warp than other steels, but considering that it is being used as a high-speed arbor I would think that you would want to leave it slightly oversized, harden, then take it to final dimensions. Let us know how it turned out after hardening!

OK Dale ,so you want to know where I live. I'm English and live in an engineering desert called France. How on earth can you find tool steel at that price when over here mild steel is more expensive. I have met at least 1 good turner but they are very few and far between. All in all STAY away from here!!!. There's a lot familiar in this video (To me). I use O1 a bit, because it's a good alloy steel, and often less expensive than 4140. It's also easily hardenable. Love to hear what you think of using it and leaving it in an annealed state. Still has better specs than Mild Steel. A lot different to work with though. I also made a set of brass jaw protectors, that I can't ever get the piece straight or square with XD Great in theory, I can't get it to work well in practice. Thanks for the vids. Great Job!
