This is actually super useful since we're hardly ever taught stand-up gripping per se in BJJ. Though obviously in BJJ you can and should grip break the hell out of your opponent while in judo the vast majority of those are banned.

I did judo for so many years and i remember after a couple years how fustrating it was getting cause of grips and no one really trained it so i went to other dojos and spoke to many top guys who showed me good stuff so its great for people getting into judo to see this information much easier than my way lol

Thank you for your comment Jon. You are correct. Grip fighting is an integral-and difficult-aspect of Judo.

Coach Steve: This video has the single best O Soto Gari explanation that I have ever seen. The traditional doesn’t work against a resisting skilled opponent. Your 6 step process of 1. Anchor grip on sleeve. 2. Side step (one only) 3. Grip with power hand behind shoulder 4. Clamp down elbows. 5. Left leg across body 6. Reap. Is so easy to follow and will lead to muscle memory adaptation and execution! Thank you!

My coach is great, and I love where I train. But I always find that these videos are so insightful. Just love watching people who think differently, and explain their process so well

Great video, thanks! I haven't had much opportunity to learn grip fighting since I started apart from bits and pieces of advice from the blackbelts as I've been going along , it's really helpful to have this video running through the fundementals! This is a kids class but it's great that your coaching style is such that I can benefit from it as a 20 year old haha

Well this is what I am looking for, we had done alot of grip fighting but it was basic training. Need to learn this and pass it down to my son as a legacy. Thank you Sensei, you deserve more subscribers. I think you need to join with BJJ Fanatics to video something like this or Free Style Judo.

Thank you Neji. I've heard of BJJ Fanatics but have not looked into it yet. Is it a KZbin channel?

Sensei Scott, I am very grateful to you for sharing your mulitple years of expirience knowledge! I am 2 dan judo player, 2.02 m and 137 kg. Which techs of kogyo is most efficient for tall guys as us against to short stiff guys?
@welcomematstevescott6 жыл бұрын
I am tall as well so I understand your situation. I recommend a Leg Style or Spinning Uchi Mata (we have several videos on that on our channel) as a strong forward attack. Often, the short-or even bent over-opponents do not expect this type of Uchi Mata. Check on our channel for Uchi Mata against a Stiff Arm or Bent Over opponent. I also recommend a Cross-Body O Soto Gari (we also have videos on this on our channel). The short stiff opponents are often vulnerable to their side so this type of O Soto Gari is really effective. Best wishes, thank you for your question and I hope this helps.

Sensei this is probably my favourite video in your channel. Would you do a more extensive tutorial on footwork to set up the opponent, like how you did @ 14:40?
@welcomematstevescott7 жыл бұрын
We can do that. That footwork pattern is Taisabaki is one of the primary movement patterns used in Judo and is quite useful for many throwing attacks. Keep watching. We have some videos on Taisabaki and will post one on our channel pretty quick.
