Prague, CZECH REPUBLIC - 1993 World Figure Skating Championships, Ice Dancing, Free Dance - This was the competition where 6 of the 9 judges on the panel were suspended by the ISU when it was found that those judges had scored the couples based on their reputation rather than from their actual skating. That said, Oksana Grishuk and Evgeny Platov of Russia narrowly missed beating their compatriots to win the Free Dance. They had to settle for 2nd Place and the Silver Medal here. Interview with Susanna Rahkamo and Petri Kokko of Finland on their 4th Place finish follows.

I really loved that... I only really loved their 1996/7 OD Libertango but this really captured an atmosphere. I think there were technical issues with the separation and the hand to hand but the concept and execution was sublime. Thanks for the information about the choreographer, it explains a lot

While it didn't have quite as much polish as U+Z, this program was by far more technically difficult and skated with MUCH more speed and a better presentation. This should have been the gold medal winner and U+Z should have received silver. They got their revenge in Lillehammer, though, and they were completely unstoppable for the following 4 years after that. (No hard feelings for U+Z -- I love them as skaters -- but their program lacked the difficulty to be world champion this year.)

Funny. They dominated ice dance for the years after this but I didn't see them do a free dance I liked as much as this until 1997. Evgeni was really sensational in this dance. So vigorous with the way he moved his entire body, especially as the music reached such a frenetic peak. Wonderful

That's likely because this free dance was choreographed by the great Shanti Rushpaul. Their free dances were largely forgettable in 94, 95, and 96 (although to be fair, they never performed their free dance in 95 at full strength due to his injury). Then in 1997, they choreographed most of their free dance themselves due to their fall out with Linichuk. While Tarasova looked after the free dance in 1998 whereas Natalia Dubova and Ludmilla Vlasova did their programs from 90 to 92. Notice how their best free dances were not ones arranged by Linichuk and Karponosov. Also notice how most couples who skate under L&K typically skate very fast and aggressive programs but they are typically very open in the handholds, are almost aggressively banal in terms of the expression, and lack any sort of subtlety or subtext.

@@gk891 I do think their 95 free dance could have been really good had they not been injured most of the season and only performed for the first time at worlds. They are lucky Rakhommo & Kokko had their easiest and most forgettable ever FD this season, as I think there was big sentiment for them to pull an upset there, and G&P were vurnerable, but their basic FD this year was not good enough to allow that, even against a rusty G&P. If G&P had been able to perform healthy all year and build that FD though I think it could have been really good. I liked many aspects of it.

I would disagree with Krylova being anywhere near Grishuk's level. I didn't care for Krylova's stiff back posture, insane facial expressions, and almost gangly-looking body movements. And even if Oksana Grishuk was/is a hussy or slut, what does that matter? Her skating abilities and her personal life are two different things. Some skating fans have a somewhat similar issue with Chris Dean in that they can't stand that his ego is so monstrously huge (allegedly anyways). But that shouldn't detract from his skating abilities or his creativity as a choreographer.

I think they should have won the FD here even though there were a lot of separations and hand to hand holds. At least they tended to do footwork and moved fast during the separations compared to Usova/Zhulin's program that was full of suspended poses. I thought it was a much better program conceptually and in terms of content compared to Usova/Zhulin's. I will say that Zhulin shone in that FD though.

@@azbycx56 I actually like this piece of music. And it's done in the blues style which is characterized by asymmetry, improvisation, rhythm, polyrhythm, and solo movements. And I thought the choreographer (the great Shanti Rushpaul) captured these characters in a very atmospheric way. That being said, I'm aware there are issues with this program as there were a lot of separations and at least one illegal lift. Unfortunately, this is often the case with many programs choreographed by Rushpaul as many of her signature pieces (this program, Klimova & Ponomarenko's Lawrence of Arabia and Bach programs) all had illegalities. That being said, this is one of the few programs from Grishuk & Platov where there was any sort of sexual chemistry between them. And it still had more challenging content than Usova & Zhulin's free dance which was void of any sort of content.

+Tal Mamatov It's interesting how the judges, including the Russian judge, seemed against G&P that season (it might've been from the fallout from the affair Zhulin had with Grishuk) yet they much more in their corner the following season with much weaker material. Apparently there's a rumour that the Russian skating federation became angry with Usova & Zhulin in late 1993 because they didn't present their material to them before the competitive season began so they could give some feedback. And so they switched their support to Grishuk & Platov instead in spite of trying to almost drop G&P the previous season. I have no idea if any of that is true but it would explain a few things.

@@tylerbam7183 Dubova was pretty stupid when looking back at what happened. Not only for doing that (getting into a fight with the Russian fed) but also for being at the helm of that whole ugly situation with not only Klimova & Ponomarenko but also Grishuk, Zhulin, Usova, Platov, and Navka. @gk891 6 жыл бұрын
Maya Usova was one of the most overrated ice dancers I've ever seen. While she was an exquisite performer and had the grace of a ballerina, her choctaws in all of the compulsory dances were truly some of the worst I've seen whether it be the double choctaw in the rhumba CD, closed choctaw in the blues CD, or the crossed open choctaw in the kilian CD. They were not only flat to the point where they were practically straight lines but she often performed the second step on the wrong edge. And in both the OD and FD, she very rarely could ever handle good content. The one time she and Zhulin performed good content was in 1994 but they clearly could not handle it as they looked like they were crawling over the ice that year.

@@MsRumex Yes, Grishuk is very much a Linichuk-type skater in that way. Linichuk's skaters are often very very aggressive and physical skaters who skate with a ton of speed and power. Luckily for her, her stint with Dubova smoothed out a lot of her basics which is (IMO) one of the reasons why she and Platov were so good together. They combined the best of both worlds (Dubova and Linichuk).
