Glad I watch this I was going to order this but now nope. Wish I could get the one I had back in the 80s. Thanks for sharing this.

Funny you are using it exactly the opposite of the other guy I watched. He ran the stone into the blade.

Thank you for posting this video. How do you accurately set the angle for sharpening?
@DougLearn Жыл бұрын
I used the guide that came with it. If you watch the video at about 12:30 in you can see it
@theeddorian Жыл бұрын
You can make a guide if you think out the geometry. The actual angles are less critical than many manuals and videos will seem to be saying. You can teach yourself to estimate a good bevel by eye.

It looks like you did not tighten the nut holding the grinding wheel enough. You can see this when you first spin the wheel by hand while filling the resevoir with water and the wheel is spinning freely on the shaft because the nut should be spinning with the wheel. Thats probably causing the sideways wobble. You also never show how to adjust the chisel to get the desired angle.
@DougLearn Жыл бұрын
The wheel was not corrrect and I got in touch with Grizzly and they sent the proper washer that was supposed to go with it. This tightenened the wheel up as it should have been. Thanks for the comments

Did this come with a different clamp for your rounded gouge for the lathe vs the straight chisels?
@DougLearn2 жыл бұрын
It just comes with the one for chisels. I will have to buy the additional supports for knives
@nickshelton843111 ай бұрын
If you haven't already found out. Grizzly sells a specific lathe gouge kit for this grinder for about $20

Disappointing that it has plastic housing and not metal. Also i wouldn’t go over the edge of the wheel as you go back and forth whilst sharpening i don’t know maybe I’m wrong it’s just something I wouldn’t do as to keep it level all the way across Keep the vids coming mate

It was a bit of a disappointment for me also.

Do they call it 10” because of wheel size or is that based on maximum blade length? How long of a blade do you think this can handle?
@DougLearn2 жыл бұрын
It is the size of the wheel.

Did you end up keeping this? That wobble is concerning to me but i'm no expert.
@DougLearn4 ай бұрын
I called Grizzley and talked to them about the problem and they sent out some parts for the wheel that were not the correct ones and runs much better now. They seem to have very good service for their stuff
@loubonaparte50632 жыл бұрын
Are you still using it?? Any updates??
@DougLearn2 жыл бұрын
Yes I am still using it and have sharpened many chisels and hand planer blades. I am still happy with it mostly. I am not sure that I like the wheel being able to be stopped very easily but the only time that has been an issue is when I tried to sharpen a hatchet with it.

I thought "why buy an $850 dollar Tormek T-8 when this is just $150 bucks?" But I don't like that wobble in the stone and the fact that you can stop it with your hand.
@DougLearn2 жыл бұрын
I agree with wondering about being able to stop the wheel with my hand. I dont know if that is by design but after sharpening all my chisels and plane blades I have not had it slip or cause a problem. I have good sharp blades now and the wooble really has not seemed to effect ithe performance. If I had the Tormek to compare performance I might be able to see what I am missing out on other than the additional $600 in my pocket. Thanks for all your comments and input.
@bigd3105 Жыл бұрын
The regular tormek stones have some wobble too. You just use the stone trueing tool to square it up. Which this gentleman here could purchase as well to square this wheel up as well. But i own a tormek and the machine quality is impeccable.
@ureasmith3049 Жыл бұрын
It would have been even sharper if you stropped the back edge and not just the bevel. But you probably figured that out by now.

Yes I am learning better ways to get a good edge on my stuff. I always like advice from those that know more than I.Thanks for your commment.
@smokeserpent93756 ай бұрын
just some things to take into account if you're still using this and haven't caught on, the wheel is super out of round plus not true to the bar. I hope you invested in a Tormek truing jig for the stone. if I was you I would have sent this back and either got a replacement or a refund. your bar doesn't even look straight. was considering buying one of these instead of a jet or Tormek, but I think I might just say screw it and get the Tormek and not have to deal with all these issues seen in this video. there is no way your blades are even remotely square.
@DougLearn6 ай бұрын
I did contact Grizzly and they were very happy to help me out with proper parts to fix the wheel and help me get a good smooth stone rotation. The company does a good job of helping with issues like this I have found out. It is not a Tormek but It was was more affordable for me and is doing a good job on what I need now that it is tuned up

Watch the wheel at 16:30. It wobbling. I wouldn’t recommend this based on what I saw I the unboxing. Thank you for showing this.
@DougLearn2 жыл бұрын
It does show a good bit of wobble but the face does not do as bad. I do think there are better ones out there for sure. For a relativly inexpensive sharpener it did put a pretty good edge on my chissels when I was done.Thanks for watching and comments
@donmiller29082 жыл бұрын
@@DougLearn You use the side of the stone, not the top, for keeping the back of the chisel flat Also, if you tape magnets to the bottom of the water tray, it will keep the filings settled at the bottom.
