My first encounter with 399 was taking a pizza box back to a garbage box drop and ran into a ranger who told me to leave that momma bear and cubs already left, I said “so the bear and 2 cubs behind you are not the bears”… she turned around and darted to her co-ranger who was rummaging through the rear of the ranger truck… both didn’t see her walking right behind them. 399 and her cubs just walked by like they were not even phased..kinda looked like 399 had a smirk on her face. I will never forget that day. She was an icon. RiP 399 and praying her yearling makes it through winter 🙏

I'm so glad he had compassion for our wild friends. She was just being a good Mama protecting her cubs. I'm glad she didn't hurt him worse and that he healed up. But I do hope he now carries something to defend himself. Still it's good she was able to finish raising her cubs and went on to have more, and wasn't involved in any fatal encounters. Incidentally, Wyoming Whiskey Company made a limited batch of Whiskey in her honor, you can find it on their website. Part of the proceed goes back into Teton wilderness conservation. The bottles have her picture on it. May she RIP and I hope her cub Spirit does ok on it's own.

Wow, I can’t believe this happened 17 years back in 2007, and the bear lived until one month ago in 2024 before being killed by a car accident. The bear grew up in human territory hoping it would ensure the safety of her cubs and their survival, which worked, but had run ins with humans. After all these long years, she met her end, thanks to the same humans. This is like some destiny movie stuff in real life. We could make a documentary on bear 399 and her life all these years. This story gave me a real goosebumps moment! 👍👍👍❤️❤️

I don't know why the bear attack narrator usually adds how painful the bite was when adrenaline covers the pain. In this story they say the bite is painful then that it wasn't painful. Which is exactly my point and the only thing wrong with the bear attacks being narrated incorrectly. Pain is always added when it really doesn't happen until after the attack is over n adrenaline worn off. Even in shark bites they feel pressure rather than pain. Thanks for another great vid 🐻

One of the reasons that 399 was important is that she pioneered in the Tetons. She was also long-lived, fecund, and tolerant of people. The attack on Van Denbos was defensive and sows with cubs should not be punished for protecting their offspring. Here 399 also had the additional motive of guarding the elk calf. It seems obvious to us that most people aren't a threat to cubs, but unfortunately boars routinely predate on cubs, so sows have evolved the response that "the best defense is an offense." Also, obviously the cub did not learn to "predate" on people.

The thought of bear spray and if the hotel had a can to borrow versus having to buy a likely very expensive can at a hotel gift shop is interesting. Buying one when you have them at home was a thought anyone might have but that decision could have been fatal. His thought to ask for spray was correct. Entering the woods anywhere without being prepared is foolish and the concern for price was flawed in placing price over what he already knew was important. I have been vocal that entering the woods without an ABCD plan of protection is a fools errand. Weapon, spray, airhorn, decent sized knife. Despite a weapon not being possible, the other 3 options were. He was fortunate that the bear attack concluded positively. Bear spray would likely have worked given the fact 399 hesitated after her slide past him initially. She wasn't 100% committed until his own slide down the hill reduced his size presence. Better to be lucky than good certainly applied here.

@CecilSavage-iq9zq Forgive me. I did not realize that firearms were allowed in National Parks now. Actually, for a while. I grew up with firearms being illegal in national parks, and at 54, I hadn't thought to think that changed. With that in mind, all of my ABCD, were able to be applied. Thank you for asking the question as I learned of a change in law that is important.

I don't think people realize how far bears or any wold life can travel. Even though she was on the southside doesn't mean she couldn't travel to the northside. Thdy know no boundaries. I remember taking my boss' rotties out for awalk on the frozen lake one day. My colleague told me he saw two wolves playing on the lake in the morning. Antways. Not even giving it s second thought i took the dogs for a walk assuming the wolves were long gone. Anyways about half a km from work on the lake i heard two wolves howling as close to maybe a km away. I got the dogs home asap knowing how fast they travel. If someone tells you there is an apex predator in the area give them some leeway. Stay away or be prepared to fight for your life and always be bear aware.

Good for Dennis. He did the right thing by giving the bear family a break. Mama bears gotta do what they gotta do. Yeah, bear spray would probably have helped here, but instead of making Dennis go and buy some, the Lodge could provide spray for their guests as a helpful gesture…good policy and fewer problems.
@BernieKnapp-h3n5 күн бұрын
That is good idea, if they don't use it they can return it for other guests to use.

Perhaps it is a mistake to allow attack victims to influence the disposition of the attacking bear(s). A victim who is traumatized may not make the proper choice. Fortunately, in this case the right action was agreed upon, but that won't always be true. A victim in a stressed mental and emotional state might have other ideas and might not have the knowledge base of wildlife professionals.

Guns fail more often than spray. It is amazing to me this simple fact is ignored by gun worshippers. A gun is a tool, it doesn't make you a superhero. The man killed on October had a gun, but it did not save him.
@robertdysonn5 күн бұрын
I know you’ve gun nuts always think that’s the answer but his chances would’ve been any better with a gun compared to bear spray. First of all, he would’ve never had time to get his gun out and you and I both know that there’s no guarantee at all that a gun is gonna put a big grizzly down, especially if you don’t have time to get that first shot off or even if you do get a single shot. You really almost had the same chances at that close range with bear spray as you do a gun.
@BernieKnapp-h3n5 күн бұрын
Ask anyone whose been attacked by a bear how fast they are and how fast they can knock you out. You literally have no time to grab your gun. None. It takes 3 seconds foe a grizzly to run 10 yards. You don't stand a chance with anything.
@LuvBorderCollies4 күн бұрын
@@BernieKnapp-h3n You're quite the fatalist. Yes, if your brain and senses are in neutral you won't have time to even think..."Oh sh!t"...and that's based off every bear attack story & analysis I can find.
