Glad to hear that 399 and her cubs are safe.I had read on another site that 399 was a subject of hazing because of her continual closeness to roads and people. I guess the person who posted about hazing was misinformed. Will the den be big enough for five? Sorry to hear about Blondie's cub.

Could you explain to me what is hazing ?? Tysm

@@Fadedecho1 My understanding of "hazing," when used on bears, is the use of noise, extremely loud noise, which is used to frighten the bears and encourage them to leave an area. As far as I know, bears are not considered noisy animals, which is why people are so surprised when they encounter them and they are surprised to see you too, thus the fright of the human and the defensiveness or aggressiveness of the bear. Hope someone else can add to this or correct me if I am wrong.

I’m surprised at the 50% mortality rate. The only predator for a cub I can think of is wolves. What else could cause such a high, IMO, high rate?

There are a number of different causes for cub mortality. Boar, or male, grizzly bears will try to kill cubs in order to be able to mate with their mother. There is also human-caused mortality from causes such as vehicle collisions, self defence, or having to euthanize bears for offences such as gaining food rewards from human sources.
