it has been a huge adjustment as we are a 1 income household. i finally had to make a meal plan, food prep, and stick to a shopping list. make concessions on organic/brand food and i switched mostly to costco and sams club instead of trader joes and natural grocers. i made a spreadsheet to keep track of what i buy and make sure its all bulk to last and give more time between shopping. thankfully i have a local produce market that is a hole in the wall but amazing prices from mostly local farmers and that gets us super far. we love fresh food.

Lettuce, baby spinach and rocket can be easily grown from seed in planter boxes, just get the continual leaf kind not the heading kind. And you can use free styrofoam boxes from your produce supplier and just a bag of potting mix. I have grown my own all summer here in Australia and have saved hundreds on store bought lettuce which is getting increasingly expensive and sometimes not available at all. Great project for the kids too.

FYI, my local Walmart is trying to get rid of their big packs of Corned Beef and has it marked for $1 a pound (w/brine, uncooked). I know corned beef isn't everyone's preference, but that's $1lb for beef brisket. $24 price just became $4 and there's so many recipes for how to use it (baked for pastrami sandwiches, make hash with sweet potatoes, casseroles, etc). Food prices are going crazy here in New Zealand too. Despite our country producing enough food to feed something like 40 million people, there are only 5 million of us. So most of it is exported, which means as domestic consumers we get the low grade produce (the best goes to export), but we pay international market prices. All that to say, fresh food is expensive! Eating well cheaply can still be done, but it involves buying in bulk (e.g. a whole half of a cow in the freezer) or the cheaper options. Powdered milk, only seasonal fruit, frozen veges, I make my own bread, and I got a year's worth of potatoes out of my garden. We are a family of four, and I budget $200 a week for all groceries (including toiletries, cleaning etc, and the bulk meat).

JORDAN, I am also quite picky about my produce (and some meats), so my trick to overcoming the grocery pick-up/quality debacle is to ONLY order all the other items that I am not particular about (pantry items, dairy, frozen, packaged produce, chicken, cleaning and paper goods, etc). THEN I go to the store just before my order is ready and quickly shop for any items that I would prefer to select myself; after I checkout, I just drive over to the pick-up parking for the rest of the groceries. I have been doing this for years, and while it adds a little extra time to the trip, I leave with better quality perishables and don't struggle with additional unnecessary food waste from poorly chosen items.

I spent $97 on groceries this month for my family of two by utilizing what was in my fridge, freezer, and pantry... I plan to spend under $100 in April as well. Food prices have gone up, but if you buy mainly whole foods, pastas, beans, rice... You can make things happen. We only eat chicken and turkey, but I already had quite a bit in the freezer so I've only had to grab breakfast meat this month. I baked hamburger buns for the first time last week and my kid loved them. I plan to use my bread machine more often and we are doing more casseroles and rice dishes served with meat, veggie, and sauce combos... Like Jordan has said many times, you have to get creative. We have been enjoying each meal and make sure we get in fruit and veggies throughout the day. If grapes are too expensive, we buy mandarin oranges... If I want chips, I buy a green plantain for .35 and use my mandolin so I can fry them, or I do the same with a russet potato... The kid likes Lay's sour cream and onion... He still gets what he wants because he never asks for much, but mom can always make adjustments. Where there's a will, there's a way!

You are so right about how expensive meats are these days. However, protein is so important for every bodily function, especially the immune system. So if one has to choose between protein and produce, which is actually more expensive than meat right now, we're better off buying more chicken and going light on the veggies.
@gillianmuspic23372 жыл бұрын
Don't fall into the trap of thinking that vegetables have no protein. Also dried beans , legumes and pulses have as much protein as meat
@summershymanski69012 жыл бұрын
It's actually recommended to eat more plant based protein sources because of how bad meat is for your health. Not even to mention how bad it is for your wallet. Plus, most people eat way more protein than recommended. Cutting out meat is not only healthier, but is way cheaper too. Beans all the way.

Thank you for the tip with the 7% ... I just did the math and we will have a few bucks more a week that could help us get trough it even with the now higher food prices. I'm really impressed that you stick to your budget without increasing and will try to come back to it with time... but for now I do need to take the step and increase it. Even our wage didn't increase ... but we have to make it work, right? :)

I'm right there with you on trying to do more homemade snacks instead of buying premade ones. Would love a video with some ideas for that! Now to go watch a bunch of your other videos!😄

My guess is $250. We have a freeze dryer and are loving it. I always love new ideas to help with meal planning/food prep/ and food storage. Thank you for helping me stay motivated to keep doing better.

Hi! Where did you find your freeze dryer? Do you love it?
@jonimurray11842 жыл бұрын
@@toridismuke5791 Yes, we love it. We only wish we had gotten the large instead of the medium. The only one that sells for home use is Harvest Right that I know of.We have had it for about a year now.

@@jonimurray1184 Thank you for getting back to me. What’s your favorite thing to freeze dry? Have you used a food dehydrator in the past? I’m trying to decide if I need to up my game a bit more. I use my dehydrator a lot, especially these days.

We did upgrade our pump to the premium pump which we also love.

I randomly came across your channel and so far loving the videos I’ve watched. Would love to see you freeze dry eggs. We have chickens so we get 22fresh eggs daily and sale the extra. But am considering looking at ways to store eggs for winter when the chickens don’t lay.

I agree with you about stretching the groceries, but protein and carbs are two different things. You can't replace a protein with a carb source. Our body still needs enough protein to function. So maybe buy more protein when they are on sale and freeze them
@maceynichole55222 жыл бұрын
I know! Proteins have been a struggle, but now I eat a lot of canned beans. Cheap source of protein! So is tofu.

She's talking about when you're going for food and there's no other options lol I just try to use veg sources for that
@summershymanski69012 жыл бұрын
You need way more carbs than you do protein, and most whole grains are packed with protein so you can get both easily. You can easily hit your daily protein intake without having a dedicated "protein" at each meal. Most people eat way too much protein these days and just waste their money.

I'm going to guess right on the money at $250. And yes, please share the freeze-drying video. And I loved that blooper at the end of the video btw. Have you thought of building your own vegetable garden to save some $$ on vegetables?

Would definitely like for you to talk more about budgeting and inflation and keeping the pricing down! Right now we’re doing a great job as well due to the fact that I have a prep pantry and that has saved us a lot but if I had not had that weed being some serious trouble right now, and I’ve got three teenagers!

I don’t understand what I’m doing wrong!! I pay between $250-$350 on groceries a week for two of us!! I wonder if things cost more here in Philly. Super jealous of your grocery bill lol
@sarahbast20752 жыл бұрын
I think it depends on what you buy. I'm near harrisburg. I get all my produce from a Farmer's market near me and try to buy in season. And meat I get from a local butcher (we invested in a freezer a few years ago and split a cow) so I don't buy meat at the grocery store. And I only grab shelf stable stuff from the grocery store. Not sure if that would be helpful for you or not
@MrsBaba2 жыл бұрын
I’m the same way - we are In Texas and super expensive. To be fair - Jordan spends on items we cannot eat and rather have better products. So if I could eat those items and don’t mind getting from Walmart I can see why she has a good budget- but alot of us including myself would never buy at Walmart.
@Lovey101Dovey2 жыл бұрын
I think it depends on where and what you're buying. We have some serious food allergies in our household and have to look at warning for everything we buy. Most generic/store brands contain(or may contain) their allergen, which means we have to buy name brand for more items than I'd like.

Yes please budgeting with inflation! I’m using the budget planner (and love it by the way!) but it’s all becoming overwhelming and I feel in the weeds
@mage76032 жыл бұрын
I’m trying to do better to eat recommended serving sizes, but I often feel hungry or weak from it. I can’t put my food budget up, because working hours have gone down. Been working to try and move to a cheaper city. Regardless of these issues, I know God is looking out for each of us and wants to help us in this life. Thank you for the content. Could you possibly do an updated video on free entertainment in the community?

When we make breakfast burritos we add spinach to our scrambled eggs while they cook. It's really good! You can throw in alot of spinach because it wilts way down.
