Hi everyone! Today I’m going to talk all about grocery shopping, my favourite activity :)
A lot of KZbin videos only talk about Albert Heijn, but actually there are LOTS of other supermarkets in Amsterdam too.
In this video, I provide an overview of the biggest supermarkets in Amsterdam and share my tips on how you can save money when grocery shopping here. Use the timestamps below to go to the parts you’re most interested in.
If you have any other tips, I would love to hear them in the comments down below!
PS: Apologies for the late video! I was feeling really unwell last week but all OK now :)
PPS: Please excuse my poor Dutch pronunciation with ‘Dirk’ and the phrases. I just started Dutch classes on Monday so hope to improve haha.

I've been binging on your videos since yesterday and reignited my dream to move to the NL (delayed because of the pandemic) your videos are super informative, very detailed, and high quality. Definitely, the best channel that I've found about moving to the NL. Please keep making videos. Have you thought about making a video about "moving costs" like companies to ship your things from a country to NL? Ones that you've used or you've heard of from other expats?

The "cheapest" supermarkets/grocery stores in the Netherlands are: Dirk, Aldi and Lidl. Always look for bottom shelf or top shelf products. Those are cheaper. And keep your eye open for housebrands/private label products. It saves you money 💰💸💰

@@LeesaYu that's right. Dirk is slightly cheaper than Aldi and Lidl. I'm Dutch myself and I always go to Dirk. And sometimes to Aldi and Lidl. The Aldi and Lidl are also very popular.

You became a real dutchie in a short period ;) back in the days we said "geen cent te veel hoor!" (not a penny too much) . were you also so thrifty in australia? I binged your video's looking out for a new one. Greets from the Hague.

Love that saying, thanks for teaching me this! Yes we have both always quite thrifty (my husband more than me) but here I feel I can be loud and proud about living a budget lifestyle, whereas in Sydney I feel people value brands/expensive options much more. Thanks for watching and hope you find my future videos interesting too ☺️☺️

The plastic packaging is intended to reduce food waste actually. In transit the food sometimes gets damaged and they’re forced to throw it out, which wastes more on their end than plastic. It’s our responsibility to recycle it, so we can’t insinuate that the producers are fully to blame.
@LeesaYu
@LeesaYu 2 жыл бұрын
I understand that but I really wish that we could use alternative materials for packaging instead of plastic! Maybe at least something that is compostable? A lot of this plastic they use cannot be recycled properly, and now in the Netherlands it is thrown away together with normal rubbish. And then is it really necessary to wrap every single capsicum and eggplant to avoid damage during transportation? I’m sure there has to be a better way than this!
@LiyahLova
@LiyahLova 2 жыл бұрын
@@LeesaYu My point is that we all have a responsibility, and blaming manufacturers for not using compostable or biodegradable packaging doesn’t relieve us from doing our part. I definitely appreciate your concern for more sustainable production though ☺️ I just don’t agree with people “pointing fingers” and not sharing the responsibility.

Hi Nuno, it’s hard to say and depends on your industry. I think it’s hard to get your foot in the door no matter where you are, not just in the Netherlands. But if you don’t speak Dutch then your chances will become even slimmer.
