Since the coronavirus began, grocery stores have become battlegrounds for sought-after items like toilet paper, bottled water, sourdough starters, and frozen foods. The pandemic also changed the way we shop at grocery stores.
Trips to the grocery store became fewer, lists got better, online grocery shopping became even more popular than before, and you would think that most grocery stores made a killing, but think again.
Sure, there are grocery stores that are making a killing, but some are also struggling to keep up with the changing trends and behaviors of consumers. Here are grocery stores that sadly might not survive 2021.

Well, it's always located in wealthy neighborhoods, but I guess either the number of wealthy people is declining or that they lost their jobs or their high income declined drastically. Yes, in NYC we called it Whole Paycheck. Prices are just outrageous. I used to buy things that were on special, but over time there were fewer and fewer things until there weren't any. I never go there any more. Trader Joe's is not quite so exorbitant and quality is consistently high even with store brands.

Used to love shopping at Winn-Dixie when I lived in Florida. Kroger's King Soopers has the most stores locally where I live now. Even before COVID, they started carrying less and less variety. I work as an Amazon shopper there and I must tell you they've been on the decline since the early days under Amazon's control. Quality and employee morale have been going downhill thanks to Amazon's obsession with sales and profits above all else, and the aftermath of COVID has further amplified conflicts of interest between the two companies. Telling you this from experience. Been working for Amazon for almost three years and I have to say this to all customers who order groceries through us via Prime Now: the risks we've been taking during the height of COVID is the price we paid out of our own blood and sweat to satiate your addictions to convenience.

In North Carolina, there's Harris Teeter which is in middle class neighborhoods. Quality is only slightly below Whole Foods but prices (although high) are manageable. They also have lost of sales, things like 2 for the price of 1. Their meats are just terrific, even when they've been marked down. Steaks are to die for. Produce is just too expensive, I can't afford it. Excellent selection of coffee! Food Lion is about the worst. Computer rarely have the sales, you have to check your receipt and argue with them every single trip. Many items are old -- selling Christmas season foods in July, or with comeons for promotions that expired six months ago. Produce is just awful. And the cooked chickens are hands-down the worst of any supermarket. They do have pretty good specials on soda. Family Dollar masquerades as a discount store, but the only items it sells cheaply are awful store brands or items that break the first time you use them. I know someone who also buys his venetian blinds there because he's cheap, and they start breaking from the day you buy them and need to be replaced within a few months. In the little town to which I recently moved, we had a Dollar Tree which was great (had everything and prices were super) which they just converted to a Family Dollar. Prices tripled overnight. I could basically buy anything for the same price at the gas station convenience stores. I never go there any more. Same thing when I was living in Charlotte: convenience store (or Walgrens) prices. Just say no! You can't beat Aldi's and Lidl's. Between them you can pretty much cover everything but coffee, prices are great and quality is good. Aldi's sirloin steaks are terrific and priced low. Breads a third of what regular supermarkets charge. Packs of tasty breakfast sausages for 75 cents. Clancy's potato chips are great and cost next to nothing. Good hot dogs and lunchmeat at Aldi's, and produce tends to be good. Lidl's has amazing prices on eggs, milk, chocolate milk, orange juice, and has delicious home-cooked pastries Their specials on sausages give away Premio for next to nothing. Main problem with Lidl's is that the items on weekly special either don't arrive or they're sold out the same day, so get there the day the special starts and insist on a rain check. Neither of them has decent coffee.

They lose track of what it is people want to buy and experience at the store. Many around here have quit having things I want to buy. My only option for the things that aren't fresh is Amazon unless I want to drive for more than an hour to get groceries. I'm not close enough to a source to get fresh veggies, etc. even from Amazon unless you are thinking only about the most common as onions, garlic, potatoes, cabbage. Also if they've cut staff to the point the customer doesn't get good service, yep bye. Those two things are key and the reasons those places got big in the first place. But now, they're throwing that out the window. So close, goodbye and good riddance. Our Dollar store remodeled with the bigger coolers, etc. and then stopped having things like tomato sauce. They're going all out now for snack foods and heat and serve stuff, candy, and so on. I don't buy those things. I buy staples like tomato sauce, cat food, dog treats, and other things they've either quit having or cut the number of brands down to the bone, and substituted the space in the store to junk. I make my own food and have since long before this pandemic. Hello Amazon and buying in larger quantities, goodbye Dollar Store staples. I hate it as the Dollar store is right around the corner yet a proper grocery store is 15 miles away.

Here in Canada in the western Canada it’s all Sobeys safe ways on by Sobeys should never of happened save on foods and stupid store or as we call it superstore. Really not a lot of choice if you ask me. Basically we got monopolies running every grocery store. Or worse yet Soon to be oligopolies. I guess i owe my soul to the company store!

Don't follow that debt to profit ratio is what's important and cost of goods and overhead so it might have made m9 at doesn't mean it's still viable. They cant come out and say we are not doing well or investors will flee

Wait for this Amazon trend to cut deep into your local access. You won't be able to purchase live, anonymous, and direct. You will buy virtually, identifiable, and subject to purchasing limits or even banned from buying certain things. See where this is headed?

Whole foods has fallen into a trap. There corporate buyers dont care what the price is. When salmon there sells for 30 dollars a pound and every other store salmon sell for $14.00 a pound. Smells like KICK BACKS to buyers. When you look around, you can tell, the over priceing. That's what Amazon has done too whole foods. 10% off when they Jack the price 40% is not a saving.
