GROM AUDIO Bluetooth Install: 2003 BMW E39 M5

In this video I finally get bluetooth installed in my 2003 M5. The process was literally plug and play replacing the OEM CD changer. The older models may need an additional adapter.
The sound quality doesn't appear to be the best, so I will explore a solution to remedy that. An easy option would be a USB connection.

ive been streaming music and making calls on it, but when i tried to receive calls, you need to press answer on the iphone, but it goes to speaker phone. You have to select again Grom audio. What button do you use in the car to receive phone call so that you wont press the iphone?

Be careful!! My 04 X5 had one of these installed and it caused a huge battery draw, killing the car overnight. Took me 2 months to figure out what was wrong. I highly suggest finding a reputable OEM looking replacement from Eonon or something. Hopefully you don't have the same issue!

Interesting. The unit operates on the same power as the CD changer so I am not sure how it would draw any current. It powers off once the CD changer would be off.

I think you wired it to a fuse that is always on. If the fuse is only active when the car is turned on, then it shouldnt be an issue.

Wiring was supposedly done by an interior guy. I checked it myself, and when I installed an OEM CD changer the issue went away. I blame on a mix of the unit itself and the fact the CD changer is always powered. It's the same in both the X5 and E39. It's low voltage but enough so it's technically "on". In the morning check if the park light on the shifter is lit. If it is, your battery will be dead soon. If it's not, it's a good install and you're fine. Didn't want to scare, just wanted to let you know so nobody else has the same problem. As always thanks for the fantastic videos!! I look forward to seeing what you do with the car!

Quick question - if you are listening to the regular radio (AM/FM) and your phone rings, do you just switch over to CD and answer? Does that work?

When you hook it up in the trunk you don’t have to take the radio out right?I’ve been talking to support and they say you still have to plug into the back of the radio. But if my car is pre-wired for the CD I just plug into the trunk and run the microphone wire like you have. That’s the whole point of mounting in the trunk, no need to take the radio out

Does your M5's stereo have DSP? I'm curious because GROM sells an adapter (it's their C-DSP conversion kit) that they say is "required" to be used with the bluetooth adapter if your car has DSP. I've got a 2002 M5 that definitely has DSP, but if I can avoid spending an additional ~$70 on a part that isn't necessary that would be nice! Thanks!

I'm wondering the same. I think his DSP is analog where some BMW like my 98 e39 540i is digital and has the coaxial cable running from the CD changer to the amp or vice versa. I have one coming this week so ill try it without the coaxial and see what happens.
