My mother had a toy poodle that reached 18 yrs old. Mom used to just have the dog sit on her lap in the sun and would carefully snip at her hair a little at a time and the dog enjoyed it. I don't think my mother ever took her to a groomer but she always had a nice short cut on the body and a little poof on her head. I helped to clip her nails and clean her ears. She went to the vet once a year for her teeth to be cleaned. The dog really loved my mom and trusted her completely.

You are so right about older dogs. We put our 17 year old poodle mix down a month ago, she stayed as long as she could but with Cushings, bladder stones and a mammary tumor we knew we couldn't ask any more of her. She was perfectly groomed too. Her sister is 16 years old and is in perfect health other than some mobility issues caused by being mauled by larger dogs. She is such a happy girl who goes to the groomer every 8 weeks to keep her curls under control. Thank ;you for all the information you give us.

My dog is over 17 years old - Cocker Spaniel/Bichon mix and I understand that grooming can be challenging with older dogs. My dog has arthritis and therefore can’t stand for too long on his feet. I stopped taking him to the groomer to avoid stressing him out, so I do it myself. It takes hours to finish. Thank you for showing us how to do it ♥️

Have you considered looking for a mobile groomer who can come to your house to eliminate car trips and long grooming times? If your dog doesn't absolutely hate grooming you can even have a groomer do the bulk of the work while your dog lays down and finish the rest at home so it doesn't take so long for your dog.

You were so gentle with him and I'm sure he feels much better now! I have a shin Tzu that is about 14 hears old! She has allergies and arthritis. For about a year she had to wear shirts as she had lost most of her fur and had lost some weight. She used to weight around 13 pounds but is down to 9 pounds now. She goes to the vet every month for two shots plus I put thyroid med in with her food every day. She used to always sit on my lap but since I have had to give her pills and trim around her eyes she almost won't have anything to do with me! I pick her up once a day and hug and give her kisses but after a minute or so she wants down! I miss those days when we could cuddle together. She also has lost the sight in one eye! Good job!

I had 2 Shid Tzus, Zander and Zelda. Zelda passed away at 17 and Zander passed away at 16. Both of them were loved and very special. We still miss them and, it has been almost 3 years since we lost them. My husband handled all the grooming. Best dogs ever❤❤❤❤

She was NOT loved by her owners!! First, they neglected her, lied to the groomer about taking her to the vet for treatment of her bloody and broken skin and only when the groomer insisted they tell her what was really going on did they come forward with the truth. So they're liars, abusers, disturbingly neglectful and looking for a cheap and nasty solution to address Didi's injuries etc. Did you not see how much Didi was shaking with pain every time the beautiful groomer was shaving around the wounds; and she was extra gentle as well. That just goes to show how much Didi was suffering. Loving, caring, nurturing and compassionate pet owners do NOT allow their pets or any animal for that matter to suffer just because they are trying to save on dollar signs. These kind of people do not have the right, nor have they earned the privilege of owning a pet, let alone having a farm full of animals. I'm disgusted by them!! It's only because they were caught lying to the groomer about Didi, that they decided to finally take her to the Veterinary clinic which in turn, thankfully Didi's health was attended to otherwise she would still be in that condition or worse. Thank God for the groomer, she is the real saviour and heroine who saved Didi from further suffering and pain. SHAME ON THE OWNERS!!

We adopted a mini poodle at 12 1/2 years old (previous owner died). We kept her trimmed, by her groomer that knew her all her life and to keep her comfortable (plus she needed diapers). We took her to the vet at the smallest hint of trouble to be sure she was as healthy as possible. She had nail trims once a month, too. She only lived another 2 1/2 years, but they were good ones. I think, with the caring groomer, she could have been groomed more often for a bit more comfort. But I also know it’s a kind of guessing game with our old faithful puppers.

We call it a comfort groom because they are “grandfathering out” Whatever you call it, it takes a compassionate and loving person to take on these grooms. Especially when you know it’s the last. Jager is a great name for a Lab - I think it means “hunter” in German. But I’ve always named my dogs with old names of people: Goldie, Sadie, Sophie, Julie, Cindy, Percy, Tilly!

I had a beagle mix dog that lived to be 19. I had a German shepherd collie mix that lived to 15. I have a dachshund that is now 15…we go for his checkup this week 🙏🏼❤️ I love older dogs. That dog is the sweetest.

in my 70 years, I've loved and been loved by 5 cocker Spaniels that I've rescued from abuse. Every one of them I have cherished and adored and would dearly love to have one more elderly cocker spaniel to care for before I die. I watch grooming videos like yours, to satisfy my need to attend to and care for another Cocker Spaniel: cleaning and grooming their ears, teeth, paws and nails and the monthly hair cut 🥰🥰

🐾As I watched this I found myself getting very angry😖& sad🥹. There is no excuse for any dog🐶old or not to get into this terrible condition! Her coat was so matted her skin couldn’t breathe at all and her ears were filthy! Animals depend on us to take care of their needs & you shouldn’t even have a pet if you aren’t going to be a responsible pet owner! How many years has she had to live in this condition? Any dog that lives 17 years has been well cared for and loved. As they age, it’s more difficult for grooming to be done, the dog is in pain, can’t stand, etc. Well done groomer and family. ❤

I have a 15 year old dog of mixed breed: some terrier, whippet, a little lab. He's just a sweet dog. Not sure how much longer he will be around, though. I've seen him age a lot in the last year. I agree that while this dog is old and has lived a long time and is likely well loved, she needed a haircut a long time ago, and her nails clipped. I hope the owner comes back to you too help that old girl live out the rest of her life comfortably.

That they continued to love and care for her, but didn't put her through the stress of grooming that may cause a stroke or heart attack, that could end in death in a dog her age? That the owners have to make such a hard decision, because they know and understand that matted fur can be painful? The more important question here is what DON'T you understand and empathize with?

@@kellyhall2844 Kelly - If a dog has been consistently groomed, why would grooming when it is elderly cause stress? As we have seen in these videos, a dog that is groomed feels better, looks better, and is not in pain from the matted fur pulling on his skin. We don't empathize with people who don't/won't have their dog groomed because it is elderly - that's all. What is incredible is the serious neglect some of these wonderful dogs must endure. It is heartbreaking. The character of people can be seen by how they treat their animals.

I understand the owners hesitation to groom a very old, painful dog. I had a long-haired cat that lived 20 years. She was not able to clean herself, and I did it for her. I had her groomed and bathe by a professional who came to my home. She did amazing work, but it also cost over $200 USD. People do the best they can. I don't doubt that the owner loves this dog.

Our Precious died last year in July. She was about 17 years old. For the past 12 years she had been to the same groomer every month, but her arthritis got much worse, she was blind and her hearing was destroyed by overzealous medication by our veterinarian, so the groomer said that she couldn't take her any more. I started doing a modified grooming ab home for her last 6 months and it worked out fine. We miss her every day! But got a new puppy (poodle/schnauzer) age 15 weeks. It helped to fill the void in our hearts.

I have always had rescue dogs, sometimes two or three at once! Let me see - a Collie, one Black Lab, two Yellow Labs (the best of them all), a Dutch Shepherd, and now two Great Pyrenees. The Labs were best with my children; the Pyrs are wonderful with my grandchildren. The Collie and Shepherd were great with adults. They all lived to the age of 13-15, except for the Shepherd, who died at 10 from hemangiosarcoma. But now I’m getting old, and it isn’t as easy for me. But I’m lucky because my son and daughter in law live in my house, so they help so much.

Not many groomers take dogs that can't stand. It is very hard to care for a 17 yr old dogs fur without stressing them. I wouldn't think they didn't try to care for her.

I love watching you groom. I also really enjoy that you have started talking in your videos and explaining things to us. I would love to hear what size blade you use on different areas. I don’t have senior dogs right now, but I have in the past And they are very hard to groom sometimes. I do my grooming myself. I love senior dogs. It’s sad to see them pass, and it’s always a tough decision. But if you can rescue a senior animal you can make their life the best it’s possibly ever been for them to enjoy till they pass. I adopted an 8yr old chihuahua and she lived to about 16 before congestive heart failure took her.

I have a 10 year old Bullmastiff. He’s at the end of his life but he’s a happy boy because he gets lots of treats 😊. I bathe him myself once a month because it’s hard for him to get in and out of the car to go to the groomer.

Beautiful video. Have had 11 dogs over our 54 years as a married couple in South Africa. Many lived to old age but were regularly groomed & had vet's care until the end. They enriched our lives so much. Many were rescue dogs . Now have a King Charles Spaniel, & a Brussels Griffon keeping us young!

That old girl must feel so much better. I have 2 Border Collie mixes. 8 and 10 years old. So far they are in very good health and have lots of energy. I don't feed senior food yet because they are high energy dogs but I may in the future.

My dog fuji was a schitzu. He lived to be 23 years old! He was a newborn puppy that was gifted to my grandparents when i was born. We were both born in September of 1994. There are no groomers around my area so my grandparents took care of his grooming. His favorite part was being dried off with the towel. He would get the zoomies after a bath but once he saw you with the towel he would literally jump into your arms haha his maintenance was simply. Brush, bath, nail trims, ear cleanings occasional hair trimming with clippers and scissors. He didn't mind any of it. But once he got to about 15 years old his body just ached from the bath and the vibration of the clippers and he couldn't stand as much. So his grooms became less frequent. My grandparents did their best. They kept him as clean and comfortable as possible. By no means did he ever suffer! He was happy to the very end! And actually it was strange..... the week before he passed he grabbed a towel from the bathroom floor and dragged it over to my grandpa. Basically asking to be groomed one last time....😢 my grandpa took his time grooming him step by step. For the whole week following this Fuji kept sneaking outside. (He was 100% and inside dog) but he kept sneaking out. Finally after a week had passed of my grandpa finding him and bringing him back inside he ended up finding him in the corner of our yard curled up on a towel he had stolen and had passed away. I loved fuji so much! He had the cutest quark though! Ever since a puppy he would do a low growl whenever he saw me or my uncle. It was not mean at all! He actually loved us the most! And he wanted us to growl back. He wouldn't stop until we did. Once we growled he would wag his tail so hard that his whole body would shake! Later on in like he became deaf and blind. He was still such a happy boy! and he would continue to growl at only me and my uncle! He knew we had entered the house by smell. We would walk in and just hear a low quiet growl. He couldn't hear us growl back and petting him didn't work. He would continue to growl. So we ended up figuring out a way lol we would get down on the ground next to him and place our face against his chest. We would then growl, making sure to create as much vibration as possible. Once he noticed what we had done his whole but would just start to shake and he would give us kisses! 🥰

Ich habe auch eine alte Pudel-Oma (Zwergpudel, 20! Jahre alt. Sie kann auch nicht mehr lange stehen. Wir bürsten jeden dritten Tag, scheren alle sechs Wochen auf drei Abschnitte (Kopf + Ohren + Rute, Körper, Beine + Nägel + Ohren reinigen) schneiden. Sie ist blind und taub, hat noch alle Zähne. Nase funktioniert, Gassigehen auch. Der gezeigte Hund ist sehr ungepflegt. Wenn man seinen Hund liebt, muss man sich drum kümmern! Du hast ihn sehr schön gemacht!❤

We have a 17 year old Papillon/Pomeranian mix. He has been groomed regularly every 6 weeks. He is blind in his left eye. Haa 7 teeth, and his tongue hangs out of his mouth. He has kidney failure. But, is doing well in prescription food. He's contanqerous as all get out. His regular grooming is vital to his all over well being. Great job!
