Meticulously beautiful! Great job! This is the way I love to groom my Pom, he feels so good afterwards and loves running after. This cut is great for the summer months. It makes it so much easier for the next groom. Their hair grows so quickly. THanks.

Thank you for this video! I have three Poms and can't take them to the groomer during the pandemic. Your instructions are clear and thorough. I've had my guys for over thirteen years. They get cut this short at least twice a year. To those leaving negative comments, I don't care how they look. They need to feel comfortable and happy. They are definitely happier and more active in our hot climate when their hair is short. My guy with collapsed trachea (common in Poms) coughs less when he's less 'bulky'. It's up to me to make sure they have access to a bed with a heating pad and a bed without. It's up to me to make sure they have access to indoors or outdoors via a pet door. It's up to me to make sure they're comfortable and happy - no matter how they are "supposed" to look.

And you so called seasoned groomers, self righteous a holes, I would never take my dog to such pompous asses as yourselves. SamSon there is exactly one breed known as Pomeranian. It comes in varied sizes with 3-7 lb being the standard. It also comes in (for canines) the largest variety of fur colour and pattern. A groomer is not a vet though a vet may know how to groom. Double coat dogs don't gain any advantage from being shaved down. At best a "long" puppy cut might make it easier to care for the dog as in brushing out dead hair, review of the skin and easier drying when bathed. Darn shame you spoke up and removed all doubt about yourself.

I don't believe the patch above the tail at the dog's back is a bald spot caused by trimming/shaving, as suggested in the video. My Pom/Spitz has the same exact spot, coloring and everything, his tail is constantly resting there and there is a skin indentation from it always resting there. He therefore always likes this spot rubbed/massaged (it's funny, he ends up doing a two step cha cha cha like dance with his back legs when you rub the spot), I believe this is why the hair is like that in that spot. I do love the videos they are so informative, detailed and helpful.

Trimming and shaving in the summer - While it might not make sense at first, it's important to note that the thick double coat of the Pomeranian does not make the puppy or dog any hotter in the summer at all. It is common for people to think that having such thick fur might be similar to wrapping up in a thick blanket on a hot day. However, canines are much different than us. It's better to think about how proper insulation in a house does keep the house warm in the winter, but in the summer it works to block heat and keep a house cooler than it would be otherwise. This is what a Pomeranian's fur does. The skin pores on the main body of a dog do not produce any relevant amounts of perspiration. This is done via the paws and when a dog breaths. If you shave a Pom in the summer, this is a bad idea in several ways: 1. It will be counterproductive; you will be removing the very thing that works as a natural cooling system. 2. If the fur is shaved, the rays of the sun are now going to be reaching the skin. This can result in full body sunburns and at the very least it will be very drying to the skin. 3. If the inner layer is cut into, the coat may never (ever!) grow back to what it once was. And this is really a shame.

For people saying negative comments about this hair cut for a pom should try wearing a full double fur coat out in 70 to 100 degree heat, them maybe they could complain. I have one Pom who I trim down short because he CANNOT tolerate any weather above 65 degrees Fahrenheit with his full double coat, I almost lost him to a heat stroke because of it. He loves it when I trim him because it's like taking off his heavy duty coat during a warm day. Also, yes she did hold her snoot closed for short periods of time, it prevents the groomer from giving the dog any injuries. I have those scissors at home and they could easily knick an ear or gouge an eye if the dog moved suddenly. *********I had a Pom that started losing his fur and his skin was turning black. I came to the conclusion that he was allergic to chicken and within 6 to 9 months of having a chicken free diet, he has more fur then I thought he had when I got him. **********

Grooming a pom is not dog abuse, take your negative talk to the real abusers like Puppy mills who never ever groom their breeding dogs!
@Maxwell25126 жыл бұрын
PamOBrien thank you. Ive seen to many horrors of real animal abuse it makes me really sad that people want to water down what abuse is. Even if its true that grooming a pom makes them somewhat uncomfortable. Thats not abuse and the people who get this done to their dogs are usually innocently unaware of any consciences and would never want to harm their pet. While these people complain about a dogs haircut, there are dogs in certain countries that are being inhumanly farmed for food in dirty cadges, never to be loved by an owner :( and much more abuse goes on in the world then just that like puppy mills as you mentioned.
@skyeharlow83045 жыл бұрын
@@Maxwell2512 It may not be abuse, but If they know the information I'm about to share it is most certainly neglect. I'm just saying even if they love them, maybe they should do some research about their dog's breed then? Because then they'd know exactly what is potentially harmful to them. It doesn't just make them uncomfortable, it makes it harder for poms to self regulate their temperature. A double coat actually has insulation that keeps them cool in the summer, and warm in the winter. Shaving them actually makes them hotter and more prone to sunburn and heat stroke. Shaving it for reasons other than being medically necessary is not okay. Shaving has the possibility of the coat never being the same again. I know sometimes if you find a dog at a shelter it can be harder to do research before getting the dog, but researching your dog's breed as soon as you are able is a good idea for all dog owners that way you know what your dog needs, and what problems it could potentially have that are common with its breed. Now if it's a mix, it's gonna be a toss up, especially if one has a double coat and the other doesn't, i don't blame those people for shaving, even if they dog ends up having a double coat. But if it's a pure breed, it is never a good idea, but I know people are just trying to make sure their dogs aren't uncomfortable and I know they probably love them a whole lot, but people do need to understand that it can be considered abuse or at least neglect if you know all this information, and are doing it just for a fashion statement.

I have a 10 year old Pom that has a heart murmur and has been on medication for over 3 years. His vet suggested I have his hair cut short because he panted all the time to the point he was exhausted. Apparently his coat wasn’t regulating his body temperature anyway,so I have him groomed a couple of times a year and the panting stops. As his hair grows out the panting starts. I don’t want to have his hair cut because he’s beautiful, but miserable with it long.

Brushing her out a couple times a week, or even a little bit of a different part of her body daily really helps with tangles and mats. I find my pom is most prone to matting/tangles behind and below his ears, and where his tail lays over his back. He is a nervous dog and hates brushing/combing but with years of positive reinforcement and doing a couple mins every day, he tolerates quite a bit and looks like a candyfluff cloud most days. We almost never get mats, and we brush daily (sometimes twice a day) during molting season when the winter undercoat is being shed.

The only hair that is cut down a lot is his mid section. His hair stays around the head and neck and legs. The groomer just trims his tail so it is still full and fluffy. Great dogs
@michaelmanus77654 жыл бұрын
During hot weather, the coat of the Pom helps keep heat out and allows the Pom to regulate their body temp more easily. Shaving the dog down in the heat (any part of the body) is not a good idea and any pro groomer and experience Spitz/Pom owner will say the same. Evidently, you rationalize your reason to styling your Pom and don't bother with the facts.

This groomer is shaving the Pom and then she scissors. Most groomers use a clipper probably for ease and speed. It is nice to see a groomer scissoring. If you groom your own Pomeranian, time doesn't matter. Scissoring is so much better. If you shave down to the skin, this can cause problems. I feel it is better to scissor your Pomeranian and you can do it very short and there is no harm done. If you shave a BSD dog, the hair may never grow back or take years to recover. I experienced this personally when a vet shaved a small spot on my Pom who has BSD.

@@audreymai2773 I don't know anybody who needs to bathe their Pom or Spitz that often. Generally, keeping up with brushing properly is all that's needed to keep him clean and healthy, with a bath every 4-6 weeks perhaps. You are definitely correct to never use clippers on your pom!!! I'm appalled at all the videos of people shaving down (or using scissors to severely cut down) their Pom's fur. So wrong. The biggest thing I have learned to do to make grooming go well is to always make sure I have combed out *all* loose undercoat hair (I use and undercoat rake and go backwards against the hair growth direction) *before* getting him wet. Then after the bath, I use a gentle brush or comb while the fur is still wet to make sure there are no tangles, and never rub him down with a towel as that can cause tangles, too. I just wrap him in a big towel and gently press out some of the water, then unwrap him, spray on some conditioner, comb through, and let him air dry. All of this I mention because having the undercoat matt up from a bath will cause you no end of problems and that could possibly be a cause of yours seeming like he needs to be bathed more often? Anyway, good luck!

@@ashleydriscoll4991 I *never* take my Spitz to a groomer, because they don't know better and use trimmers, which should not be done on a double-coated breed such as the Pomeranian (Pom is just a dwarf spitz; mine is a medium spitz.) So first rule, comb and brush only, never use clippers; you can use scissors to trim around the paw pads and anus and to lightly clean up the edges of the leg feathers, ruff, and tail. Second, treats will help your dog put up with and learn to love grooming :-). I used lots of cheese over lots of time to teach my Spitz to lie on his back and let me trim his nails (when I got him, he would growl and snap if anyone so much as touched his paw.) Anyway, as far as grooming, it doesn't actually take as much as you'd think. You just have to be regular about it. I do just ten minutes a day, or skip a few days and them spend about a half hour maybe twice a week. Mist the coat with watered-down conditioner to prevent breaking the hairs. I first give a once-over with a pin brush. Then I use an undercoat rake, working in small sections starting at the back, combing the hair backwards to remove any shedding "wool" from the undercoat so it doesn't get caught in the outer coat. Also, when backcombing, this is a good time to inspect the skin as you part it, to check for fleas or ticks or any issues. After the undercoat rake, I spray on more conditioner and go over the coat with a slicker brush. Don't forget to comb out the tail, too. Then I use a soft boar-bristle brush (designed for humans) on the leg feathers and feet and around the ears. Then I wipe a damp washcloth over the face. That's it! I guarantee it took longer to type out all of this than to actually do it ;-) Once I've done all that brushing and combing I give him a break and don't do the nails on the same day. Because he is nervous about his nails, I do it very often so I only take off a tiny bit each time. Good luck!

@michaelmanus77654 жыл бұрын
Ale it might seem to make sense to cut hair to cool down but a double coat dog in particular is quite different. The hair is a barrier. It can keep cold out and also reflect heat and allows the dog to more easily maintain its core temperature. There is a difference between cutting hair and shaving. When the hair is cut down near the skin, this allows for exposure - exposure to heat, exposure to cold, easier access for parasites ranging from ticks to mosquito and the most obvious yet missed - sun burn. For some Poms, cutting down into the under coat may cause the hair not to grow back correctly as the under coat is damaged. If this occurs, sometimes a 2nd or 3rd shed cycle later the hair returns to a fuller state and sometimes, not at all. A friend of mine has a Shiba Inu mix who had a surgery and part of the dogs side was shaved down (removal of a large non-malignant mass). The vet was very clear to suggest no direct sunlight on the shaved area (about sunburn) and to check for skin irritations. There is a point to worrying about skin exposure on double coat dogs.

The double coat is actually used as a coolant and heater for the dogs. It helps trap the cool air in the summers & warm air in the the winter. I have heard this multiple times but still shaved & scissored my double coated dog in the summer once. Luckily, his coat grew back fine but I didn’t believe the repercussions until I started grooming. Now I just recommend owners keep up on their grooms if they shave a double coated dog because it’s damaging the coats natural ability. Of course I want to make the customer happy but the fur clients health is my number one concern.

Just read all the comments and I can believe the number of people who are losing their damn minds over this cut!! First of all it’s what the owner want, as a groomer you can make suggestions but at the end of the day you have to do what the customer want if you want their repeat business because they will find someone else to do it if you won’t. Secondly the owner probably want to keep the shedding under control I’ve seen double coated dogs like Husky’s and Rough Collies cut low before for the same reason. It’s not uncommon and it’s not considered animal cruelty🙄

Pomeranian grooming is not abuse, it's basic hygiene. They have 2 coats, 1 lighter and fluffier, and 1 closer to the skin. The Pomeranians will get black skin disease where the hair would fall out and the coat would turn grey if not approached with proper care. And washing, grooming the coat and, brushing daily, will help to prevent it.

If you’re reading this: POMS SHOULD NOT BE SHAVED UNLESS FOR MEDICAL REASONS RECOMMENDED BY YOUR VET. It’s a common misconception that shaving a Pomeranian will keep them cooler during the summer. Actually the opposite happens. You should never shave a double coated dog because their undercoat acts as insulation and actually protects them from extreme temperatures (cold OR hot) and shaving a pomeranian can leave them more susceptible to overheating and sunburns 🥵 💔

What poms are honestly outside dogs where this would be a concern? Inside, this is completely irrelevant. The only concern on shaving a double coated inside dog is the potential for alopecia, and if their coat has grown back appropriately after a shave, then even this is not really a concern.

Ollie looks very much like the doggie you used. We were in Florida and his short hair was growing. Then Covid Operation 19, added 1.5 months. We returned to Ontario, Canada and all is closed and that added another 6 week so in all Ollie's hair has not been trimmed for over 3 months. It is staring to get warmer and living in a rural area, Ollie runs and sniffs free of leash. He picks up burrs etc.. His hair is in his eyes and around his anus. It will be another month before we can get to a groomer due to the back log. Thank you for your post. Try getting burrs out, poop off, hair in eyes, not so hot,,, Thank you again.

My pomeranian he doesn't like getting combed at all nothing so it's hard for me to maintain his coat so we take him every 6 months to get a cut and the groomers get mad at us that my dog has matted hair but hey I try with my dog but he gives me a hard time, I honestly dont know how the groomers do it with him, well I've watched this lady groom him and he didn't really start biting unless she got too close to his private area lol I guess he was scared to he wasn't really flipping out

daisy gee you should train him and show him that grooming isn’t so bad! Or at least get another person to hold him while you’re grooming him. Matting is awful.

You have to get him used to it. My pom doesn't like it either, but he puts up with it, because he knows its gonna happen one way or another. But my boy is sweet, he would never growl or bite. It wouldn't matter if you were killing him. 😂

But it's not their dog. The lady who owns him may either be too old to care for the coat, lazy, one of those people that say it keeps them cool in the summer (which is absolute bs) or they just like the way it looks.

@audreymai27735 жыл бұрын
Poms were bred down to a smaller dog. They use to be sled dogs a long time ago. Google the info, it is very interesting. Have you heard of a "throw back pom"? It's basically when you get a larger pom, because the blood line from long ago comes out in their genes.

Poms have 2 coats. Shaving them can cause some very serious skin problems. Many A POM HAS ENDED UP IN A RESCUE BECAUSE THE OWNERS DISLIKE THE WAY THE WAY THEY LOOK DUE TO LOSS OF HAIR DUE TO LONG TERM SHAVING. i KNOW THEY LOOK CUTE SHAVED DOWN; BUT PLEASE IF YOU HAVE TO DO A SHAVE, CARE FOR THEIR SKIN AFTERWARDS. AND BE AWARE THAT THEY MAY LOSE THEIR UNDER COAT AFTER CONTINUOUS SHAVINGS. IT IS EXPENSIVE AND TIME CONSUMING TO CARE FOR THEIR SKIN AFTER THIS HAPPENS AS WELL . THEIR UNDERCOAT IS THERE FOR INSULATION FROM THE COLD AND THE HEAT. IT IS IMPORTANT TO KEEP THE UNDERCOAT MAT FREE HOWEVER. MANY PROFESSIONAL GROOMERS DO NOT KNOW THIS. I HAD TO SHOP FOR ONE WHO DID. I HAVE OWNED POMS FOR MANY YEARS AND HAVE SEEN FIRST HAND THE RESULT OF POMS BEING SHAVED. IT IS SAD .

the only reason why i'm shaving my spitz is because she has started to get lumps and we need to keep an eye on her, we cant do that while she has such a thick coat because if she ever gets a lump that could be more than just a benign tumour we wouldnt be able to see/feel it until it is too late, plus the breeder we purchased her from shaved her to begin with and we have noticed that once it grew back it was super uncomfortable for her as it grew back twice as thick :(

The perfect example of how NEVER to cut the hair of a Pomeranian. The have 2 layers of hair, the outer layer stops dirt from sticking to your dog, never ever cut those hairs back. I have 45 years experience with poms, only ever trim back hair that's too long compared to the rest. Don't be too LAZY and use cutting hair as a substitute to brushing. It will take up to 5 years before this dogs protective hair grows back on its own, and it will look ugly with the inner hair showing instead of its natural beautiful hair.
