I can remember sewing in the very late 60’s and 70’s, in an all girls school, lots of boy school dances, so needed lots of dance frocks, couldn’t wear same dress twice, so I was always sewing, thank you mom for paying for everything. Went to work downtown and again had to have clothes, pant suits cane in 1970, fashion was everywhere, date clothes, cocktail dresses, work dresses, skirts and collars were wild then on blouses, we even wore matching coats. So a few years in big office and off to college for nursing school n career in uniforms for next 40+ years , also had to have college clothes n the hippy styles, I was preppy hippy , uniformed student nurse and cocktail dresses on Saturday nights, sewing was my passion since 12 so I was knocking out outfits weekly plus all I had going on. By 3 kids, I was sewing for them, working in hospital supplied uniforms and running buy premade clothes for the rare times I did need to dress in something other than jeans.. retired now and back to my passion of sewing, so many new techniques n materials that I thank you and the others who have dedicated their time to these wonderfully presented videos, Thank you for your time, your tips and good cheer, it’s like having girlfriends who share the same passion. Fun part is I now need clothes n hubby is the type who dresses up to go to Wallmarts, so I’m dressing up too! Love you, thank you for sharing.

Vivmom Sews Yes...I loved my mom “to the moon and back” who, btw, only sewed a little,. I got my sewing bug from my 2 grandmothers ( my dad’s mom sewed mostly out of necessity.) My mother’s mom, died when my mom was only 16, from an infection after some simple surgery (pre-modern antibiotics.) But she was a very talented seamstress & made virtually all my mother’s clothes...even her underwear...slips, bras, panties...the works. She did other needle arts too like tatting and I’m so glad to have a tatted bedspread that she made. ❤️💐

I know that “funk feeling.” I can’t stand that 5G is going to be rolled out - the frequency is proven to mess with human moods causing depression and angry outbursts, hey, just what the current culture needs.😭I try to get a little sun each day when it’s shining; I’m convinced it helps my mood. I have fond memories of 70s Simplicity patterns. My mum worked in a fabric/haberdashery store & got them with a staff discount. They are what I learnt to sew with on her hand-cranked Singer 185K. I also remember those polyester knits. Mum made us trouser suits out of Crimplene, mine was shocking pink & my sister's was sunshine yellow (almost dayglo.) It's probably just as well that we don't tend to get very hot summers in the UK, (well apart from 1976,) or we'd have died of heat exhaustion.

I'm spending the night in the hospital with my husband waiting for his blood pressure come down and I found a new video from you. Yay! It made me so happy. All of those 70 patterns brought back high school memories of sewing. I so wanted to make some of those cute things but most didn't come in my size but the ones that did, I loved them and felt so cool when someone complimented me and I could say , "thanks I made it".

thanks for a step back in time- I sewed all my clothes in the 60's and seventies and wore those nurses uniforms to work every day! Those poly doubleknits back then were easy to sew with because they were stiff and we did need to put zippers in them to get them on the body!

Wow, these patterns bring back very fond memories of my home ec class where I first was introduced to a sewing machine, learned to sew, read a pattern, and my love of fabric. It started with a class trip to a fabric store, once there our class was given instructions from my teacher, then my class was set loose in the fabric store! I got to choose my own pattern, fabric, and notions. the garment once made was then graded on the quality of sewing and difficulty of construction.. And at the end of the course, We all had to wear the garment we had made in a fashion show for the school. (hated that part). but I fell in love at the fabric store. Oh the colors, textures, designs, I was hooked! I can remember going through that store like it was yesterday!! My husband now tells me I have enough fabric and patterns for a lifetime. Thanks for the trip down memory lane! I love watching your videos!.

I recognize so many of those patterns! In fact many of them are in bins in my sewing room. My sister and I were very slim as teens and young women, and the patterns wouldn’t fit many today. I believe we were much smaller in the 60's and 70”s because we didn’t eat processed food.

I think you’re onto something here, Jane. People didn’t have drive-through windows with burgers, fries, shakes and pies available any time of day or night. I tend to stay away from fast food but I can’t help sneaking a fry or three if Colin or Brad gets some. Oh, actually I tried the new vegetarian offerings at Taco Bell and they were delicious. Also restaurant portions in modern times are massive. And I’m sure soda has exploded...just trying to think of caloric intake nowadays vs. the 60’s/70’s. Plus we didn’t sit around half of our waking hours on cell phones and laptops (I am sooooo guilty of this.) Thanks for writing!🌺

Oh that Pinterest page sounds marvelous, Kathy. The pattern envelope illustrations are so splendid. I never tire of them!! Brad’s top was so maddening because for a complicated instruction (front zipper with guard) they tossed out a couple words and left you to twist in the breeze. I ripped that guard off and went my own way. Is it perfect? No! Is it good? Maybe, if you’re in a dark room and have had a couple Mai Tais.

Dime stores, yes! Loved them! We had one called Grants and I can remember being a kid and shopping in there. My mom would let Sonia and me walk to the shopping center alone when we were 7!! Can you imagine?! Grants had things displayed on counters along with shelves and we would buy real things for our dolls - bottles, bibs, rattles, plastic pants (remember those for babies?!) and it was so much fun!! We’d come home and set up blankets in the back yard for our houses and play all day - we called it House Boat. Oh my goodness, the memories. Thanks for writing, Jo Marie!😃

You are very cute and stylish. It's fun to spend time with someone who is so animated and enthusiastic and positive. My mother spoiled me by always sewing clothes for me that thankfully fit Me! She knew just how to alter the patterns in every case. Before she died she lived at my home and I needed to help her sew. But that was all she wanted to do whether healing a broken hip or recovering from a stroke. Our most fun outings were going out to the JoAnns store. After she died the ladies at the cutting table at the JoAnns store would ask about her and mourned with me.

Oh Diane, that is so sweet. Our moms and grandma’s (and special aunts or neighbors) paved the way for us to sew. Love the old patterns...I used to sit and daydream in the old catalogs of the pretty dresses and shoes...then I learned to use the sewing machine at 7 and it was so much fun. Only didn't have the resources for fabric but we did get hand-me-downs that we would recycle the fabric...but we didn't know we were being "green" back then. Looking forward to seeing your makes for October.

I used to have that uniform pattern ... I was a VERY overweight teenager, and I worked at a local resort as a chambermaid. We had to wear uniforms for work, and it was very difficult to find large size clothing back in the early 70’s. My grandmother had taught me to sew, and I made most of my clothes in order to get things that I liked. Anyway, I had that pattern and I made myself a couple uniform dresses for work.

Hahaha! Glad I’m not the only one that is missing my glasses that I’m not really missing! I want to say to the new sewers, I agree with you, sewing is fun when it’s fun, but that’s not always the case. Even a seasoned sewer can get frustrated! I actually made McCall’s M6996 and loved how it was turning out, but ended up trying to modify it and oops, not so cute now. Won’t be adding THAT to Instagram, Lol 😏 I definitely remember those fashions! Thanks for sharing.

I actually have quite a few of your patterns. I made my nursing uniforms with that pattern in the 80’s. That was before the scrubs started coming out. I just love looking at patterns, I get a lot from The Salvation Army thrift store for 25 cents each, crazy.

Man, I wish our Salvation Army had pattern deals like that!! What do you think of nurses wearing scrubs? Remember when nurses wore caps? My sister is 66 and a nurse, and graduation from medical school meant “getting capped.” (Uh oh, is that also a Mafia term?😱)
@sbrickett
@sbrickett 4 жыл бұрын
I actually enjoyed wearing scrubs, my hospital provided them to us at no charge. It was so much easier than scrubbing blood and other body fluids out of whites. The problem now is that everyone is wearing scrubs, from the nursing staff to janitorial. It makes it very confusing when trying to find a nurse. I remember very well the capping ceremony, it was a milestone in every young nurses life. That thrift store was throwing pattern away until I found out about it, now I buy them and store them, sometimes is use them, although I will not live long enough to use all the patterns and fabric that I have accumulated throughout the years, lol.

Soooo loved the patterns! I'm going to have to watch again uninterrupted. Oh 1973!! Now THAT was a year to remember! I was 15 & had to have back surgery, I was in a body cast for a year. Needless to say I learned patience that year. But when I got out of that cast I was sewing again! Some of those patterns look so familiar to those days & I was stick thin. Lol! Weren't we all? I really loved looking at the patterns with you. I haven't posted my makes yet & I made quite a bit last month. Working on a Fall table runner. I've never made one. I was feeling festive this year & wanted to decorate for Thanksgiving. I'm going to make matching table napkins to go with runner for Thanksgiving. It's not clothing I know, but certainly made me happy to look at! Love your videos & your sweet personality. Husband is having knee replacement this coming Wednesday so I don't know how much sewing I'll be doing. Keep us in your prayers:) I hope you're all healed up from falling.

Love your glasses...you crack me up !The nurse uniform pattern reminded me of the uniform I had to wear when I went to work in the beauty shop after I got my Cosmetology Licence...1975 The dress in the pattern 6086 was the dress I wore in my senior picture 1973. I loved that dress! I can see you wearing that Vogue dress. Love seeing kitty...🤗

That nurses’ suit could totally be a cosmetologist uniform, Debi! My mom always said “beauty shop.” She went until her dying days and got one of those hair sprayed old-lady do’s from her beloved stylist Kay. Your senior year dress is so cute - I love all the details. I wonder if I’m too old for it. The girls have on their platform sandals in the illustration. Great fashion times - the 60’s and 70’s. (I shan’t comment on the 80’s and 90’s, though those decades have their devotees as well.😃)

One of my all time favorite tops! Simplicity #6086 Made shortly after I was married on my new Singer Touch & Sew machine!! It was made of a slinky, slippery dark blue fabric with little flowers on it & trimmed with a little lace. I love the trips down memory lane you prompt! Makes me almost sorry I've purged most of those old patterns! (Not that they would fit now by any stretch of the imagination)

Love the new glasses! Very cool, very on trend. My cousin in California (we call them "the beautiful cousins") has the same ones. Have you gotten into the shower yet with yours on? I remember the first time I did it I couldn't believe it. I finally switched over to contacts after never being able to keep track of the thousands of pairs of glasses I had all over the house (and car). I still find them . . . ugh, brain moments! Are they contagious? Placket. I was editing video the other day and yelling at my laptop - "It's this! This!" 😂😂 Oh, the patterns! I watched this on my embarrassing-drive-in-movie-sized-tv (Mark doesn't ask for much, so when he wanted it I said "whatever you like honey") so the designs were nice and big and beautiful! I'd mention my favorites but it would be easier to point out the ones I didn't like as much! What treasures! I kept laughing at the 1970's ones because I think I made one of the dresses for a sports award ceremony when I was a junior in high school. I know what you mean about wanting to start sewing them right away - I now want to go in and make up a vintage Vogue I have, that has those odd princess seams. Those two friends are darlings, so generous!

The embarrassment is all mine, Jen, to be displayed on such a large screen tv! The horror, the horror. I hope you had a strong drink after that to ease the trauma. Love the old patterns, never tire of the illustrations and details. People complain nowadays about “shapeless bags” - meaning current pattern dresses. I adore shapeless bags but I see their point. The old styles had flair and truly needed to be fit. I can only wonder at some of the vintage designer patterns - probably quite difficult to master. Thanks for the compliment on my glasses, and for the laugh @ getting in the shower with your specs on. Too funny!!😄
