And the end of the twenties the stock market crashed and through the country into depression, in Arkansas, we got the dust bowl. My Daddy hit the road in search of how to keep His parents and siblings afloat and my Mom's parents squeezed by. YThen WWII, Daddy was thirty four and had a lot of life experience. The Army was glad to have an ole Arkansas farm boy. But the all lived through it . Oh, the stories they told me. My life is so easy. I thank God for it. So glad you are back even if it is just to talk with us.

I've spent the year alone including all holidays and will be alone Christmas. My family all work with the public and do not want to risk my health by coming here. My dd has been quarantined 4 times this year due to co-workers getting Covid. I currently have 20 friend, acquaintances and family on my pray list for Covid. Love the fabrics and patterns you've chosen and can't wait to see them made up.

Oh, my goodness, I LOVE the sound of the gold stripe fabric, I can almost feel the hand of it! The Chiropractor sounds like a good way to raise a generation of human lumps. All of these fabrics and patterns look so great! SQUEEEE!!! Love that black FLORAL!!! This year's tree is about 36 inches and fits on the counter that separates the living room from the kitchen. We have four cats, and this little thing is the PERFECT size -- our cats completely ignore it. I acquire both what looks like a haphazard way. I have two skirt patterns that live in my head. One takes 3 yards and the other takes 5 yards. That scan is on auto -- ALL the time. For the rest, if I see two fabrics that look amazing together, I get enough for my gored dresses. When I buy a pattern, I rarely have the fabric picked out. But mostly -- if I like a fabric, I get 5 yards and then I generally have enough for anything I sew -- and if we are at the end of the bolt -- I just get the rest. And I LOVE, LOVE looking at remnants! Twice now, I have gathered together enough of the same remnant to make a floor length nightgown. Fabric. It's addicting. I'm addicted. I haven't touched new fabric in 8 months. I'm having withdrawals! Stay well.

Hi Viv, nice to see you back at it. Since I don't have access to so many wonderful fabrics and don't want to pay mega-shipping here to Mexico I kind of do both. I'll pick out a pattern (stash rotation and hacks) and see what I have on hand in my small stash. Other times I'll go to the fabric store and spot something and grab it right away knowing it will 'come in handy' one day. The upside is that the store I frequent gets 1.4 meter cuts from their main store in Mexico City and they sell them in a bin for about $2 American. That helps a lot. I personally can't see getting that excited for Christmas this year. We are still in pretty bad shape down here and I am just grateful that we have food in the fridge, a dry roof over our heads, and a little stack of UFO's I want to finish before the New Year.

Hi Elaine! I love hearing from folks who’ve decided to dust off the old sewing machine and get the scissors (or rotary blade) out again! It just makes me happy. So thank you for writing to tell me that you’d like to return to sewing. Maybe you could relax your standards a tiny bit with the rationale that you’ve earned it!! Plus, if you sew at 85% perfection instead of 100%, you’ll still have ready-to-wear beat by a mile! Enjoy!😄

Making Christmas simple is the best. People take the joy out the season trying to over doing all the tradition!. Your fabric and patterns look so fun and perfect. I don’t have a system to buying patter and fabric. I will buy patterns on sale and buy fabric when I see something I really like on sale. It can go either way, pattern for a certain fabric and next time a fabric for a certain pattern😄( and of course can change my mind often)!

I enjoy your videos tremendously, Vivmom, and I love the paisley fabric and think it'll look darling in the top pattern you chose. I haven't sewn in a gazillion years. I used to sew a lot for my kids back in the 80s, when I could make garments out of a yard or so of 99 cent/yard fabric. Made a robe for my hubby our 1st year together, which he still wears. Was never good at sewing for myself. Loved my Bernina sewing machine. Never could thread my mom's Singer machine. My daughters liked to borrow my Bernina when they were older. Sadly, it was stolen a few years back, from the car of one of my kids. No more sewing for me...these days I'm into crocheting scarves and sometimes hats. I chuckled when you mentioned handling your fabric because nowadays that's how I feel about my yarn. I'm looking forward to watching future videos from you.

I actually do a little of both. (If you saw my pattern stash and my fabric stash you would say I do a lot of both.). Sometimes I am looking for fabric for a pattern and just can’t seem to find it. I will run across a fabric I love and have to have. There seems to always be a pattern in my stash that I can see it made up in. It becomes one of those unintentional surprises. That’s what makes sewing so much fun (and watching your videos of course)! So glad you are back! By the way, you are reason my stash of fabric and patterns have grown so much in the past year. You bring such inspiration and joy to those who sew!

Merry Christmas! It's time to enjoy the family and slow down. I love your choices of patterns and fabric! When I was growing up my mom and I would look through the pattern books pick out our choices and then look for fabric. Now I just buy the fabric because I kinda know in my mind what I want to make. I also started to quilt which is a whole other mindset! My dream job would be to help out in a fabric store because I have a love affair with fabric. So no you can never have enough fabric and I love your dress. Be nice to yourself and relax. Thanks for sharing.

Oh my goodness! I have just gone back to all your older videos and reviewing all the lessons you have shared with us, and to my utter shock I just realized that you break all the rules !!! Love it!😂. You cut your fabric any way you want to and following the grain is not something you generally do for some fabrics! You do not do full bust adjustments, you move onto a pattern that will serve the purpose.😂. You do not put in a zipper for the most part. You add a loop and button to a top closure. I have stuck to so many rules that sewing has not been an enjoyment but a stressful, unfulfilling chore with often times terrible results. Where did you ever get this freedom? You have just given me permission to maybe get back to sewing and maybe even enjoying it and maybe even having success😂😂😂

Thank you so much for mentioning and buying from Metro Textiles. I've been to his shop in NYC a few times and I'm a big fan of Kashi's. He's a one man show, has fabulous, high quality fabrics and customer service and I worry about him being able to survive the pandemic. I've also ordered some coatings from him online - affordable for me at 60% off! Yes shipping is expensive but I too am willing to pay it. Can't wait to see what you make of the gold stripe!

My fabric hoarding is a true stash because I used to sneak it into the house and stash it away until I could pull it out and salivate over it. I just buy fabric when I see something I like and a good price. I don't really do a sorting and matching until I want to make another garment. But then again maybe I do match pattern to the fabric...I love the pieces you have showed and look forward to seeing the finished garments. The Christmas process is coming and I will watch it develop. It will be a quiet process with no frills and fuss. Just food and some movies. Many blessings.

The end of Octember I was determined to make a dress for my 60th on 24th November. I went through my boxes of patterns to select just the right dress. A 1960s style dress was first choice. It devolved into anything vintage and even a medieval style. Roughly 50 patterns later (and not a dent in what I have) I sat with it for a week or two and sorted down into a pile of 10 before looking at the materials I had bought for the occasion. The state borders were opening up so all of my family could at least visit to celebrate. I was getting into the spirit of it, finally. Unfortunately, my youngest daughter’s positive results for MBC on 2nd Nov put that into the bin. Funny how life has a way of reminding us what is important. My second oldest has had a diagnosis of MS and shared that info a few days ago. And I was worried about covid! I’m grateful that you are here sharing your enthusiasm and reminding me that it can still be an important part of my life. The energy level on the other hand... wet fish! ❤️🎄☃️❄️

Thank you for writing, Patricia. It is a blessing to be so happy over a hobby. Everyone needs this! Not necessarily with sewing, but with something! For my husband, it’s bicycles. And now that the Tour de France is on, he’s in heaven. I love watching too, but not as much as fabric and patterns😄

I always pick the pattern first. That's because I'm a minimalist on a budget so every garment must be absolutely necessary. It's so nice to hear your Christmas message. I agree. Slow down and have a lovely "little" Christmas.

Eons ago I used to buy a pattern the fabric to make it. Now, I buy fabric with a tentative plan in mind of what I want to make with it-which often changes when searching through all of the patterns I've bought because I liked them. I bought the Joann bird fabric, still like it, haven't used it I made S8548 and just might make it again in sweater knit. I also made B6663, but after putting in a completely unnecessary invisible zipper, it was huge and since I didn't really like my fabric choice, I never finished it. If I make it again. I'll size down and skip the zip. So glad you're back, my lovely sewing twin!

Love the fabric! I normally find the fabric then the pattern. I've found if I do it the other way around you can't find the fabric you like. But buying alot of fabric you don't have to worry about having some. Enjoy the Holidays.

Hi Viv. Love seeing you. Guess I've done it both ways... depending on the occasion. I don't keep a stash. Guess I don't have that attraction to have a lot of fabrics on hand. I do love seeing all your finds, and can't wait to see what you do with them. So pretty.

I don't sew a lot, but the other day, I saw the prettiest fabric. Then, I saw a contrasting fabric. I loved them both, and remembered a fun pattern I love to sew that they'd be gorgeous on. So I picked them up. That's in the works for me. But I don't really think about it.

I’m going to have to take a look at Metro Textiles! That gold stripe fabric is gorgeous! I could see a long elegant skirt with a gold lurex sweater! And it would really look elegant on you with your height! But the dress you chose will also be beautiful! It truly is elegant! All your choices were in target. They all go together very well! As for which I choose first - it depends on what I see first! If I see a fabric I love, I will purchase it and pick the pattern later. Sometimes I fall for a pattern and then look for a fabric. There are so many gorgeous fabrics to choose from! And I have tons of patterns I love from the 60’s!!! BTW, I just have to say it again -I’m so glad you’re back! It is such a day brightener when I see a new video from you! Christmas is going to be more simple for a lot of people this year. My prayer is that people will pause and realize the reason for the season and take time to worship our Lord!!!

@@vivmomsews4962 bless you! Amen! I started to look up Metro Textiles yesterday, someone distracted me and I never got back to it. I probably won’t buy if they are that expensive, but will watch for those sales. I just can’t get over that gorgeous gold and white stripe fabric!

I pick the pattern first then the fabric. ~~the reason, I no longer do stashes. Had so much fabric that wasn't being used and patterns that went with nothing. Of course when the major fabric shops left so did the urge to buy. Was in Joanne's a couple weeks ago and what they had was pettiful. I'm big on picking the right buttons; their racks went from Neverending to two pettiful racks. Actually it felt good to hear you don't usually buy there either. Love, love, love that brown knit! A simple dress would be to die for!!! 🤩

Love, love, love the giant paisley fabric. I match fabric and patterns both ways. I buy fabric I like and patterns I like and see what happens. Busy with a quilting project but just ordered patterns from Simplicity, paid more for shipping than I did for the patterns (almost). Thanks for the matching video, you always give me such motivation!

I’m just seeing your video. I always seem to be behind this year. I usually buy the pattern and wait for the material to show up if I don’t immediately see it. I always like the drawings that the manufacturers have on the patterns and so, I’m always in the hunt to find that material, to make it exactly like the drawing on the front of the pattern, which is what inspires me to buy the pattern in the first place.

I thought of you often this week, remembering one of the first things you told us about yourself - that you always wear what you make, even if it doesn't turn out as anticipated. Thanks for that! Love your fabrics and pattern choices; I'd have to make the lovely gold/white stripes vertical with the horizontal ruffle since I'm round :) I've had to return to PT for a back injury, and my therapist told me the same things about the changes in techniques. I was surprised, and then pleased because what he's teaching me is much more comfortable! Nice to see you again!

Thanks for tip of don't rush, I hate rushing, my Christmas gift knitting is done & in the mail to family! Just working on a pair of socks, sewing a knitted blanket for chairty, next it's knitted chemo hats also for chairty, then I have a sweater commission to work on, after I have a list of things to sew! That's interesting I usually pick a pattern first, then the fabric, but maybe it should be the other way around! While I am knitting in December I can think about what fabrics I have & try to match them to a pattern! Love watching you and your makes, you are so talented! Stay save!

I did decide to sew all our gifts and now, since we can’t be together, the date for mailing has me a little stressed. However, I’m taking your advice. Christmas comes ready or not. 🎄And thank God for that!

Hi Viv. I feel my sewing room is a very private and personal joy. Unless I feel safe around someone’s opinions I do not take them there. It is not somewhere a person can shop my fabric, books or patterns. A crazy minimalist practicing some Condo program would make me uncomfortable and they would not be welcome. Those joyful sewers whom are industrious that have there own stashes would understand. Have joy with me. No shopping my stash. On the other hand when I Tidy a section sometimes I make a pile of things I have lost interest in and I Share w anew sewer or an old sewing buddy. Thankyou for sharing. Do a zoom sewing afternoon with us. For experienced sewers. We could do the asymmetrical top. The Simular pattern is still on sale at Walmart. Your inspiring. Good job!
