The end screen title read - "SVT(swedish television) humour - Approved by the government". Swedish comedy is very unrestrained when it comes to satire. Maybe a lot more back then but i feel it´s mostly true today as well although the climate has become more sensitive. Love your facial expressions of both shock and awe at the same time lol

The Swedish word means "male gay person" basically, it's in the gray area of being a slur depending on context, but not as offensive as the translated word is in the US where it's 100% a slur. The song became a huge hit in the gay community in Sweden, so they understood where the song was coming from. It's obviously a criticism of how religion views homosexuality. The last screen says "SVT Humor: Approved by the state". SVT is Swedish state TV.

It's proper sarcasm - challenging established views by using the same language but with a twist. Grotesco does it so well. Whoever did the translation was clearly accustomed to American, as opposed to international, English. Fag means "gay" only in America. In the rest of the English-speaking world it means "cigarette".
@lotsofotherstuff
@lotsofotherstuff 5 ай бұрын
Gay is the word for a male homosexual person. If you're a homosexual woman you're a lesbian. Yes, gay is also a sort of umbrella term, but I would argue it's more associated with male homosexuality. So fag was a uneccesarry word to use since it's expressly a derogatory word, gay would have been a better translation.

You should also check out Henrik Dorsins character "Ove Sundberg" from the TV-series "Solsidan" where he plays the most socially awkward creepy neighbor everybody want to avoid. That character has become a meme, and his greeting phrase "tjenare mannen" has become a phrase that a good amount of Swedes use to greet each other in a ironic way.

I watched this on Swedish television in 2010 and loved it. I'm gay but I just love the satire. We are in a different time right now and I don't think I will ever see something like this again in Sweden. Sweden should be a freedom of speech, but it feels like we lost that part some years ago :(

Språkresa translation below: The coffee scene is from a longer sketch where china buys the world supply of coffee and refuses sweden to have any. Sweden is one of the largest consumers of coffee if I´m not misstaken. Feel free to correct me on any of this. Språkresa: Have you tought about going on laguage course abroad this summer? Why not visit Rovaniemi and our finnish primeaval forest campus! Here you´ll learn to speak the Finnish languages as the Finnish language should be spoken. You´ll meet nice (proper) finnish men and learn the difference between the native finnish trees like; fir (spruce), fur (for simplicity needled trees) and pine! We´ll guarantee that the children will experience their first boozer with seasoned Finnish alcoholics. So do as many before you and come to the promise land of thousand lakes. He ends with a wordplay which is hard do translate but it´s something like "If you don´t want trouble, book your language trip on the double!" There is also a lot of dialect in this sketch since he is speaking swedish with a finnish accent, or "finnish swedish" (simplified) which means that he cuts the S´s out of swedish words and follows up with a hard P as in "Språket (language) becomes Pråket which is revealing for someone with this way of speaking. Feel free to (respecfully) correct me on any of this.

The translation is very bad and leaves things out, but you get the idea. What they are saying about the Eurovision Song Contest is that it has become endless, far to long. They are leaving stuff out to shorten the translation also. Even if you would be a non swedish speaker, you should have heard "Volvo" which was not translated. The translation to the ridicule of the finnish was nowhere close to what he is saying. It's basically portraying a bad accent and alcoholism. While he is slapping the guy in the face, he is saying you will get the opportunity to meet pleasant finnish men.

That finnish bit used auto-generated subtitles that were complete wrong and nonsense because he spoke swedish with an extreme pretend finnish accent that the auto-translate-program clearly couldn't handle. Also "bögarna" just means "the gays", it's not really a slur, although in swedish pretty much anything can be turned into a slur if you just put the right kind of intonation and emphasis on it, and also maybe add some extra swear words around it.
@Nekotaku_TV

”Bögarnas fel” is a satire of the ”blame culture” that is so common amongst all of us. It’s the men’s fault, it’s the feminists’ fault, it’s the homosexuals’ fault, it’s the christians’ fault, it’s the immigrants’ fault, it’s the jews’ fault, it’s my family’s fault, it’s the EU’s fault etc etc

I have a really wild idea. Since the two driving characters from the start are both christians, the reference of the Bible, and then they take in three other people from the big 3 "western" religions, making every single one of the driving characters religious. It might be about religion. If it looks like religion, sounds like religion and walks like religion, maybe it is religion.

0:38 Indeed, some people might, wrongfully mind you, disagree. Thus, controversial! :P 1:56 The translation is, kind of, OK (I'm guessing they're aiming to make it possible to sing-along, rather than literal), "fag” is the translation that feels the closest to “bög” (but how offensive the word is would depend very much on the context, like who says it, how- and when it's said and so on). 3:00 The people/religions they're parodying haven't really changed, so it's still relevant. 3:28 What he's saying is that the Schlager festival never seem to end (nowadays). In the context of it goes on until late, E.G: I think that Melodifestivalen is about 30 minutes (or 1/3) longer than it was in the early noughts. And I'm guessing that Eurovision might've gone the same way - so nothing about the concept/project of the Eurovision dying.
@AltCutTV
@AltCutTV 5 ай бұрын
The translation is quite terrible all through. YT translate would likely do a far better job. And there are also a few things get lost in translation because of not knowing how certain things work in Sweden in particular. For example the "Eurovision" is not actually mentioned like the subs say, it's really about the local pre-competition which gradually bloated out to a six part event. The literal translation is that it just seem to go on "forever", not that it will never die. The reactionary reaction to this is further emphasised by the panel guest calling it by the original name not used since long before this debate show. Which in turn is a certain one being setting. Even in reality it usually escalated to somewhat controlled chaos as it increasingly brought in entertaining characters rather than guests who could have any chance to convey either opinions or facts. The lady stating what her son did also had the number changed from 4 to 12 for some reason, and rhyme or flow can hardly be why. As for the Finnish language/culture trip, it's just parody of a typical neighbourly rivalry parody. For UK it would be an ad for Scotland where everyone wear kilts and toss logs.

It's a world play on the swedish word for "language trip" (språkresa) and the fact that in a finnish accent they often pronounce b as p (bråkresa=pråkresa). So it becomes like a "trouble trip" (how to stir up trouble). It seems we are supposed to believe this guy misunderstood the concept of "språkresa" with "pråkresa". It is also making fun of the fact that finnish people like to drink alot and produce alot of vodka, which they drink pretty heavily and naturally leads to a lot of fighting. This kind of finnish person is a stereotype that is immedietly recognized in the street in any major city of scandinavia. Here's a real example: kzbin.info/www/bejne/i6OXmmybpNmmn7s

Bög is a derogatory word for gay men, but it's taken back by the homosexuals, much like the blacks has taken back the N-word, but even more so. Pråk is a joke about the pronouciation of "språk" which is Swedish for "Language", so it's about an exchange program for learning the language. It is also a wordplay with the word "bråk" that means fight
