Debbie's first question was asked because at that time she had already begun buying up the wardrobe and props from classic films to preserve them. Many stars didn't keep things from their films and many classic costumes and props were lost forever.

M. HB More than that! Eddie Fisher left his marriage to Debbie for Elizabeth Taylor (her BFF at the time) sparking a huge scandal. Groucho knew that. It’s an unbearable moment and yet Debbie’s incredible decorum and professionalism is downright astonishing.

Three very intelligent people right there. Debbie Reynolds deep interest in Hollywood film history is hinted here. She single handedly created the largest film archive of film props all the way back to the silent era. With the intension of creating a museum. But she did a great thing by conserving them through decades that would otherwise have seen such items vanished.

From Debbie Reynolds memoir about her time on the Cavett show with Groucho: "One night in 1970 we were both guests on Dick Cavett’s talk show. When he saw me, Groucho took me in his arms, dipped me backward, leaned in and kissed me on my lips. Then as we chatted, he recalled that he’d visited me once in hospital when I was ill - but he said it was only to check out a rumour that I’d just had breast implants. I hadn’t. And I certainly hadn’t been aware that he was copping a look. Anyway, after he said this, I became aware that Groucho’s face was turned towards mine whenever I spoke, but his eyes were fixed lower. It seems that he really was preoccupied with my chest"

Groucho was the sharpest wittiest comedian of the last century - no question. Great, rare talent. But he did have trouble with marriages no question about that too. I love Groucho, but I can see why he had big marriage issues. He says, after a few years the woman (or man) loses their charm, so the other naturally wanders.. Way wrong. Marriage is not about lasting "Charm". Sure attraction is a key part of it, but the foundation is commitment to family and a loyal lifestyle and a commitment before God as a sacrament. Marriage is not a "right" for anyone - the heart of marriage is a religious commitment with 2 people and God together to come together naturally, in harmony with nature, and dedicated principles about serving the other and family. If you don't believe that, save yourself alot of trouble - don't get married - it won't work for you...

Spot on, Hank. It's only controversial and repugnant to those who don't know, don't want to know and therefore won't know. Mainly, those running from God like a thief from the law. Little boys that have grown into bitter old men and never understood what it takes to be a real man. Too bad for them.

Dignified! She wouldn't leave Groucho's remark about women in marriage to go unchallenged. And it was great to hear her say, (when Groucho talked about the woman losing her charms) that the husband can become boring, over time. She said it quietly, but she said it! She didn't say anything about a man losing his charms.

I considered Debbie Reynolds to be as gorgeous as Hedy Lamarr. Debbie Reynolds was one, of the two. most under-utilized dramatic actresses of Hollywood. The other was Doris Day. They both could do any genre, any role, any age and it's a shame they were used so much in musical comedies.

Debbie has said that in the late 1960's, she became good friends with Elizabeth Taylor. Debbie said that although she was hurt at the time, the more she thought about it, she was grateful to Liz for stealing Eddie Fisher away. She said she told Liz this and Liz erupted with laughter - she was just as glad to be rid of Fisher. That was a bond for them that lasted until Elizabeth Taylor's death.

defundthewar, this week TCM had Bette Davis on with Dick Cavett. Bette was lying about how she turned down the part of Scarlett O'Hara in Gone With The Wind. Look for the repeat. Every movie mogul in Hollywood said the only time they heard that story was from her and her alone. Jezebel was the poor man's Scarlett O'Hara. She said she spent a whole year in England and never heard of the world famous novel (published in 1936) by Margaret Mitchell.

The truth, all Hollywood's Leading Ladies of the day tried to get an audition for two years. . . but who on Earth would have the guts to call Bette Davis on this story. There is a behind the scene story that the part of Scarlett O'Hara was supposed to go to Paulette Goddard but Laurence Olivier wanted his wife to be in it. The fights over Goddard or Vivien Leigh is what took two years. They just appeased the other leading ladies by having them audition to pacify them.
