The Brothers originally stopped performing in movies after "The Big Store",figuring they were too old. However, when Chico Marx owed money for excessive gambling, they came back together to do some movies and pay off his debtors. THAT is a truly heroic thing.

If you watch a video right here on KZbin called Groucho Marx Dick Cavett 1969. Around the 13 minute point you can hear this story come from Groucho himself. It's all true! A jew dared to criticize the Catlicks!! Save your outrage for Sunday meeting, church people.

Groucho said in his own words on a Dick Cavet interview, he showed none of the Hollywood bigshots proper respect, in fact truth be known they went out of their way to show the contrary even to tge extent of offering insults. He fugured they were different to the extent that they didn't need the movie deal. He always said they could always go back to doing Vaudville,Broadway or in other words stand up comedy. I think he loved that fact and throwing it in their faces, and really, I think he enjoyed that way better, even though it was nickel and dime but a nickel went a lot further back then. A lot of people used to say Lenny Bruce is not afraid, but I think Groucho was a lot braver aand long before. You go, Groucho.

I met a much older Jewish couple a few years back who had come from New York. The first thing he says to me; 'Hi. I'm Larry. This is my wife Estelle. We've been married for 69 years ~ best 30 years of my life!' He truly had a Groucho Marx sense of humor! Later he would say: ' I went in the army because I wanted to kill Nazis. Instead, they sent me to Guadalcanal!' He was a delightful companion that day at the age of 95 and I kept in touch thereafter and his wife has carried on into her 100's follow his demise at 97.

Groucho was a gift from God to the world. Absolutely one of a kind. His humor had a joyous quality about it, unlike anything the world had ever seen, or will see. Totally unique. He brought laughter to millions, and made their lives much more bearable while undergoing the disappointments and trials and heartaches of life. I have no doubt he will be dancing and singing and joking in Heaven through eternity, forever making us laugh, and setting our hearts free!

My fond memories of my beloved now deceased loved ones have a connection to Groucho Marx/The Marx Brothers. My mother Rose and I (as a child) went from Brooklyn New York to Melbern NJ to see Duck Soup being screened in a movie theatre there and not long after that their movies were constantly being screened at revival theatres in Manhattan (from the late sixties all through the 1970's into the 1980's up until the early 90's) of which I was in attendance may times. My brother Michael took me to my very first Broadway show "Minnies Boys" about the life of The Marx Brothers and their mother Minnie. My father Jack took me to a Marx Brothers marathon in a movie theatre screening four of their movies (Opera, Races, Circus and Store) My father wanted to go leave after two movies but I wanted to stay and see the other two and we did and my father laughed at all four movies more than I did! Then I would attend movie theatres screening their movies in Manhattan with my friends Paul Heinz, and Philip Lobosco and mostly with John Conigliaro. Whenever I would see my cousin Angelo we would quote lines that Groucho said to one another. My aunt Anna and I would read all their biography books. I had many Marx Brothers books in my collection of Marx Brother items. I wrote this as a tribute of my love for the Marx Brothers as well as my dearly departed dearly beloved family members.

The way the host quotes Groucho's jokes proves that half of what made Grouch a genius was his delivery. Anybody else saying them, they sound flat and humorless. When he said it, it was brilliant and hilarious. How could anyone ever come close to Groucho again?

Delivery and timing are everything in comedy, especially stand up.
@The22on

I agree. I can't tell a joke and I know it's because of timing. I've learned to pause occasionally in telling a joke. It's amazing how that helps! Not to be self serving, but I have a very high IQ so I like a joke just for its cleverness. I don't need pauses. But most people do. So I pause and it works. But I can read a joke and its funny on the page with no timing. Oh, we'll. Ya gotta do what the world wants - most of the time.

Terrence Daugherty the only other person to equal Groucho was Mae West. Those 2 were the greatest wits of the 20th century and contributed greatly to the personality of the outspoken male or female: the liberated individual who stood up for themselves which is a very 20th century characteristic and prefigured all the great civil rights movements which followed them. Both Marx and Mae are 2nd only to Oscar Wilde, the greatest wit of all who came before them and died in 1900.

Elder abuse is such a horrible yet invisible epidemic. We should care for and respect those who cannot look after themselves anymore, but instead there are many sick people who take advantage of them. A modern case of this happening to a celebrity was Stan Lee, and even that information was kept mostly from the public. Groucho did nothing wrong, and he deserved better treatment at the end of his life.

@@lorimiller4301 I don’t understand why you would care for someone who obviously made your life hell. I realize there must be much more to the story but there must be some love for you to talk to much less care for this person. The attribute of a truly good person is doing things for others with no desire or need for anyone else to know. If indeed there is a hereafter and the good are rewarded ( heaven) and the bad punished( hell) that is when your life and your decisions and actions will determine your souls fate. Not everyone believes this though. My uncle taught me by example by helping so many people, many strangers, and he never said a word about it to anyone. If I wouldn’t have seen it no one would have ever known. I’m sure it’s one of the reasons he had more people at his funeral than any I’ve seen.He was loved by so many and I had no idea until he died. It’s one of the rare times I cried for someone other than my mom and dad. I actually cried harder and longer and was more devastated with his death than my own parents and I truly loved them both. Help people daily and expect nothing and your life is so much more rewarding and good things happen. I can can say this from experience. It’s also a component of recovery for alcoholism and addicts.Since my uncles death I’ve really tried to follow his example but some days it seems impossible especially if it involves someone you dislike or despise. By doing this it shows what kind of person you really are. I say Bravo to you as we need more like you in our country . I think many of our problems would disappear if more people followed this philosophy.

I once saw a one man show about The Marx Brothers in Coconut Grove, Florida. I forget the name. It was fantastic. The star was amazing. I saw him warming up before the show. He had to, because Groucho's early movements were very physical. They involved stretching his legs in crazy ways. People don't realize what a physical comedian he was. His 'funny dances' were very athletic. It's a little like Jerry Lewis. When you watch him, you laugh at his dancing. But unless you're an athlete, you will have trouble coming close to his movements. Even Grouco's 'crouching walk" is hard to do. You have to get very low to the ground but keep your upper body straight. Many comedian injure themselves doing their physical routines. They're like ball players or other people who rely on their body. They are prone to injury. A stand up comedian does not do the physical moves of a Groucho. I read that a fan once came up to him and said, "You're so funny. Please don't die." I don't remember is he gave an answer but it doesn't matter. We need all the humor we can get in this world.

I remember Erin Fleming from her awkward appearance with Groucho on the Dick Cavett show. Groucho was a sly old fox. she was his young secretary who he chased around the desk until he caught her. He was always honest about that. She appeared to understand the "deal" she was entering into. It was a significant opportunity for her, but her career never moved beyond her association with Groucho. Tragically, she later took her own life.

I remember being shocked by Groucho's language and no-holds-barred anecdotes in "The Marx Bros. Scrapbook", published by Richard J. Anobile in 1974 (I think). Groucho later sued over the book. Anobile also interviewed the other two living Marx Brothers (Gummo and Zeppo), Harpo's widow Susan (who didn't think much of Groucho or Chico at all), and others who had known the brothers. It was pretty raw stuff.

@@dorrittakach970 it's worth checking out Charlotte Chandler's book (Hello, I must be going) - she had close access to Groucho in his last 4-5 years - and it presents a different take on the Groucho/Erin situation - less simplistic and more nuanced - and probably much more realistic. Real life isn't black and white, it's full of shades of grey - and her book shows a much more complex relationship - on both sides.

Quote from Wikipedia - "(Erin) Fleming was a diagnosed paranoid schizophrenic. She was arrested in June 1990 on suspicion of carrying a concealed loaded firearm, which she brought into the West Hollywood sheriff's office. She spent much of the decade of the 1990s impoverished, homeless, delusional, and in and out of various psychiatric facilities." Fleming died of suicide on April 15, 2003, at age 61. She is buried in Hornings Mills Cemetery, Horning's Mills, Ontario." Kinda sad, I guess Groucho was trying to help her as much as she was helping his career.

"Wasn't always a happy camper." : What an insultingly glib and disrespectful way to describe a person struggling so valiantly (and still being a great success) with an acute depressive anxiety condition. Groucho was a comedic genius. And calling him "sexist" for making subtextextual humorous remarks is ridiculous.

It isn't "sexist" to flirt by saying you'll make a pass at a woman. Political incorrectness isn't the same as being crude. The authors of this video don't understand the terms they're using. There was no mystery or scandal to this storyline, just a sad biography.

Political incorrectness should be dropped as an expression. Many people basically take it to mean "an opinion I hold that others reject". And they use the label as evidence in support of their opinion. Because others reject it or dismiss it that somehow "shows" that it is an "uncomfortable truth".

I suppose the "scandal" behind it is the Erin Fleming legal battle & whether or not she was mistreating & drugging him. She ended up living on the streets, behaving like she had mental issues, and took her own life.

When I first discovered the Marx Brothers (I was about 11), I immediately fell in love with Harpo. I've adored him ever since. I was tickled to death when I first introduced the brothers' movies to my daughter because she also immediately fell in love with Harpo. He was such a sweet person, on screen/stage as well as in real life. Groucho named his son after Harpo - he was originally Adolph Marx but changed his legal name to Arthur (can you blame him?).

The Groucho Marx of the 70s really disturbed me as a child, mainly through the book The Marx Brothers Scrapbook, which included transcriptions of taped interviews conducted in his final years where he was bitter and negative about the brothers, Louis Meyer, his wives, other people who had done him wrong in the business. The photos were scary, he looked bad tempered and frail, in those polo neck jumpers. There was nothing funny about him. I don't doubt the staff's testimonies about Erin Fleming but I don't think Groucho was the fragile, intimidated old man we're led to believe in this docc, during the Erin Years. Thanks very much for uploading.

one great achievement was Groucho Marx's humor travelling through Bugs Bunny, it provided a common sensibility to appreciate wit, human psychology, putting one over dumb or big-muscled people, making fun of authority and narcissists, etc... all to children of certain generations, that shared experience nowadays is imo a great loss

Back in 1974-75 I was company manager at the Mark Taper in L.A. One of the shows we did in the Spring of '75 was "Juno and the Paycock" with Jack Lemmon, Walter Matthau and Maureen Stapleton. Groucho came to a number of performances and always stood in the back with the house manager and me. The best part was his running commentary on the young ladies as they left and an occasional riff on someone else. Pure Groucho. Given all the stuff going on in his life at that point, I am appreciative of those moments of laughter with him.

Groucho is one of the greatest adlib (create a joke on the spot) artists / comedians ever . Henny Youngman was very funny , but most of those were prepared jokes . Hate to blow any one's bubble but almost all comedians have writers who write many of their jokes . When black comedian Dave Chappelle burst on the scene and became famous he stated publicly who his writer was and he was a white guy writing plenty of black humor for chappel . early days Conan O'Brien 1995-2003 was a pretty good ad liber with guests . 0'brien started out as a comedic writer for SNL . when you think about , you will find everyday guys and gals you know or meet who are great ad lib joke makers and comeback artists
