From what I know, only in the first few handful of radio episodes was Groucho informed who were the contestants -- he felt it interfered with spontaneity. The show did have dedicated joke writers, where contestants were encouraged to follow certain queries that Groucho had been scripted to ask, that was likely to lead to an interesting story that had been discovered during interviews prior to the show. So, it was half spontaneous and half scripted. But the real comedy started when Groucho used his talents and experience to go beyond the script and venture into the minds of the contestants. Groucho couldn't resist a pretty face and nice figure, which got him into difficulties, as he really needed to prefer those who were quick witted or talented in the arts, rather than hoochie coochie. Groucho never resolved that his mother, which all the Marx brothers adored, favored Chico, and he was forever trying to catch a glamorous lady in compensation.

If you look at 5:30 the woman who is talking to Groucho about men thinking that because of her voice there's a man at her apartment she makes a very intense look at Groucho. Watch it carefully because you will see her gaze right into Groucho with a lot of intensity when she says that she's never had a man in her apartment. After he breaks rapport with her, she laughs and then bites her lip as a sign of Attraction for him. Personally I like women who have those types of voices because they have a very sensual type of personality and I see that this woman is trying to take advantage of that by coming on to Groucho. That's just shows how powerful of an influence Groucho was to both men and women in his time.
