Groucho, Don Rickles, Joan Rivers, Frank Sinatra, Bob Hope, Jonathan Winters, Dean Martin, Bob Newhart, Robin Williams, Drew Carey, David Letterman, Jerry Seinfeld, they are all just legendary. Makes me want to travel back in time to the 60's and watch how this giant legacy all began on NBC from October 1, 1962 to May 22, 1992.

Color videotape was invented in 1958. Most of the Tonight Show color tapes, dating back to Jack Paar were erased by NBC prior to the early 70s because of the high cost. Seeing this on color tape is a treasure.

But regardless of their relationship, Groucho still had the power, clout and, let's face it---the money---to literally crash a Tonight Show party. Jack Parr, Johnny Carson, Ed Sullivan, hell it doesn't matter, if Groucho were alive today he'd be wheeling himself into the Colbert theater. He was Groucho. Very few would have had the nerve to stop him.

Groucho filled in as host on the Tonight Show several times after Paar left. He was strongly considered to be permanent host but Groucho was getting older and had just finished a long run with the quiz show so didn't want it as a regular job. When Carson took over the show Groucho introduced him to the nation on the first show (Carson was already known but it gave a certain gravitas to have The Grouch introduce you!).

He didn't just walk on to the set. Carson clearly was flustered that something unexpected was going on, and the camera and spot knew where to be.

The cameras were probably a three-camera system and more than likely someone backstage notified the director in the booth that Groucho was on his way to the curtain. This was pure, 100 percent Groucho. He literally just walked onto the set. Since he had already hosted it many times, introduced Carson for his first show and was well-known by everyone there, that's how he got away with it. There weren't lavalier (sic) mics. He wasn't mic'd. He wasn't introduced. And he wasn't introduced because he shows up spontaneously and just walks through a set he already knew well.

@@ronmartin89 Nobody knows where Hitler is buried. His calcinated remains (and Eva Braun remains, I believe) were secretly shipped by the Red Army to Russia where they were buried in a secret place. I understand that the remains were moved from place to place so that nobody would know where they were. Apparently, there was only one Russian secret agent who knew where they were and he was sworned to secrecy. The Russians didn't want Hitler's grave to become a sanctuary for his actual and , maybe, future supporters. The Americans did something similar ( and for the same reasons ) with Ben Laden's body. I can't see how Groucho Marx found Hitler's grave and danced on it.

The reason this type of humor isn’t seen today is too many SNOWFLAKES get offended for no reason at all. Groucho had a sharp wit and could respond in a suggestive non threatening way. I love when he said to a woman…” I can see you in the kitchen. I can see you bending over the stove, but I can’t see the stove”. I would argue that Groucho probably had a better education then any college graduate in the last 20 years. Not only did he grow up dirt poor on the lower east side of Manhattan when it was nothing but tenements. The education he received growing up in Vaudeville from town to town across the country, along with the characters he interacted with some becoming famous some lost to history gave him an incredible education. Not to mention his incredible appetite to self educate. He was very comfortable and able to hold his own with some of the greatest literary minds of his time. Although it would aggrivate him when the likes of Kaufman or Perlman wanted to talk about Marx Brothers movies and Groucho didn't. Groucho was probably a genius to a certain degree. Like many geniuses, he had a very successful life as Groucho Marx but was a disaster as Julius Marx. I couldn't imagine having a mind like his that never shut off.

This clip ( from "The Tonight Show") must have been taped around 1970. Johnny Carson appears to be about 45. The show was moved from New York City to Hollywood, California, around 1969; and the "new" studio featured the "Hollywood skyline" background. Groucho looked very good for being nearly 80 years old (at the time of the taping). Always had his ever-present cigar!

The talk shows today have nothing on the men and women from the 20th century, certainly not Mr. Johnny Carson. It will never be the same being all the older and truly talented guests are now forever part of a bygone era. I was born about 3 weeks before this episode aired and I don't know for sure but I bet my mother and father were curled up on their couch watching Mr. Carson after feeding bathing and putting me off to slumberland. This was 55 years ago and thank the good Lord and powers that be that we are in a country where we are allowed to view our history in television and that we are allowed to reflect on what was and what we heard and saw. Yes.. God Bless everyone who saw to it to preserve this type of history. It is, and he was already 75 by this time. It's interesting that "Animal Crackers" came out in 1930 and he was turning 40 that year. The vaudevillians that were legends to Carson were mostly still sharp, witty and humorous even with most having been alive in the 1800s.

Life was great when smoking was accepted everywhere, I remember my grade 4 teacher used to smoke like a chimey, she had the biggest, coolest ashtray on her desk and everyday at the start of the day she would pick one student who would be in charge of keeping her ashtray clean. I remember whenever I got picked I would polish that thing up for her so good

My Father was a brilliant writer, and he loved Groucho, I do too! We had a mirror that had a silhouette of Groucho in our house growing up. My Dad bought it on Christmas Eve one year and he was so proud, he got a deep discount because it had a crack in it! (Funny like Groucho!) After many years of having it be a part of my childhood my Mom threw it away at my dads behest. I was so bummed we didn’t have it anymore especially when I started watching You Bet Your Life on KZbin! We lost my Dad two years ago and this year for my birthday, my mom had a mirror painted with Grouchos silhouette on it for me, I absolutely love it! I promptly cracked it! (Just kidding) I miss my Dad and Groucho certainly makes me think of him, he was as brilliant and as funny as Groucho, and someday I’ll publish a book of my Dads letters! Just like Groucho!
