I can see this bit working if Groucho had a better sparing partner to go with. As written, it almost sounds like a Groucho/Chico scene, but the Chief's delivery is pretty slow and has little pacing. Groucho did the best with what he had.

He plays the devil. I think it's one of the only roles besides Groucho's that fits, Mainly because Vincent is having the time of his life, like most of his roles. I didn't even care if he was trying to get us all killed in the movie, I liked him just because compared to our representative, the Spirit of Man, he wasn't boring as hell.
@fromthesidelines12 жыл бұрын
Groucho was a close friend of Irwin Allen; he KNEW that by casting him as "Peter Minuit", there would be at least ONE funny scene in the picture (coincidentally, Groucho was also "wiped out in the {1929} stock market"- 1:44). Abraham Sofaer, who later made guest appearances on several of Allen's TV shows [and occasionally appeared as "Haji" on "I DREAM OF JEANNIE"] is "The Chief"; Groucho's then-wife, Eden Hartford {"Oh, she oughta be in show business!"}, is "Laughing Water"...

Groucho does his best with some pretty lame material. Actually the film really drags up to this point. Groucho give it the shot of energy it needs. The only really good sequence in the film is Harpo as Sir Isaac Newton. Chico also makes an appearance, but he is totally wasted. He looks very ill, although this movie is four years before his death.

I love this movie. In my opinion, putting the Marx Brothers in it was the worst part of it, and the film would likely have been far better received had they not been a part of it. Their bits were completely out of character for the rest of the film, Chico being fairly acceptable for the shortness of his part, but still not that great for the film with his delivery of even a short line, Harpo's antics painful to watch, and Groucho's scene being the absolute worst thing in the film. If they had not been in the film at all, this could have been a masterpiece, but their inclusion right in the middle of the film just completely derailed the seriousness of the satirical nature of the film.
