@@JJTownley_Classical-Composer I had read in a book "Raised Eyebrows" that most or all the reels were saved from being cleared by the studio for newer shows in the 70s. Guedel, the producer of this show, convinced Groucho to take them all when the studio offered them. They must have been archieved and hopefully recorded. I would read The Secret Word Is Groucho to get more answers. Not sure if all the radio episodes were saved. The early years of the show were not released on DVD, etc, because the head writer wanted more money, so most of what you could buy is '54 onwards, I believe. This playlist is by far the most of the show I have seen. We should save them incase KZbin goes down in the future or they get deleted, or privated.

@@zakattack8624 The same thing happened to Soupy Sales' daytime Tv show. He was putting on a demo for a toy company at a mall and I had a chance to briefly talk to him. I asked him why more of his shows are not on DVD and he told me the sad news, that the execs taped over them to record new shows. All those hysterical treasures lost because a few damn tv execs were too cheap to buy some magnetic tape. The Stupidity, the stupidity.

@@JJTownley_Classical-Composer Yup.... We just have to hope someone recorded the reruns when VCRs were a thing. I believe some episodes on this playlist are from the edited reruns, though not sure which. Maybe the Library of Congress should make an effort to track down anything that may have survived, if only Congress could give them the funding. Not sure what the lifespan of those reels and tapes are.

Having watched a good number of the episodes by now and having learned a lot of the behind the scenes of how the show was filmed and edited, I suddenly realized there were two pieces of information that didn't fit together at first. During this episode, George mentions that they don't have time for the usual three rounds. And yet, we know that they filmed more than they needed and edited it down to fit the time slot. So how could they run out of time? The most logical explanation is that what they were really saying is that if they continued, they were in danger of running out of film. At least that's my guess.
@grouchomarx-youbetyourlife7476
@grouchomarx-youbetyourlife7476 8 жыл бұрын
I'm almost certain that these little bits where Fenneman makes references to "running short on time" and such were all filmed later and spliced in when the editing was done (similar to the bits where the secret word is mentioned, or the amounts won by competing couples when the quiz was a competition). They went as far in editing as to use segments from different recording sessions to make up a show, which is the main reason Groucho always wore the same outfit. Sometimes it had nothing to do with the timing at all-- if they had a dud segment on their hands, they might edit it down to the bone and shove it in as a seemingly rushed final segment. Just as with their continuing to claim they picked contestants directly from the audience just before the show, this was all a matter of showmanship, not entirely honest, but certainly harmless. I'm impressed you notice these details-- you should really get a copy of YBYL director Robert Dwan's book, "As Long As They're Laughing". I think you'd really appreciate the level of detail he offered.
@loissimmons6558
@loissimmons6558 8 жыл бұрын
Now isn't that an interesting coincidence. I read about a year ago that Joe Friday and Bill Gannon wore the same outfits for an entire season of Dragnet while on official duty (the occasional scene outside of work would be the only exception). It had something to do with episodes not always being shot sequentially to help cut costs on locations shots. The concern was continuity if they wore different outfits from one episode to the next. Of course, George Fenneman was an announcer on both shows. Thank you for that tidbit on the contestants selected just before the show. If I recall, they often claimed that it was the audience who selected them (e.g. we invited a group of female swimmers to the show and the audience selected ...). Not exactly honest, but no harm, no foul, I guess. As for me noting detail, it came in handy when I edited newsletters in the past and certainly comes in handy when I prepare tax returns for my clients. I have to look for what might be missing as much as nuances regarding what the client gave me. One thing that helps accomplish that is having studied Eastern ways of thinking: usually more right hemisphere oriented and looking at the spaces between the fingers (for example) as much as looking at the fingers. While I identify as a Christian, not as an adherent of any Eastern religion, the discipline has been valuable and does not conflict with my faith at all. I find it interesting that the development of the major monotheistic religions of the world all sprang forth from the crucible of the Middle East, the trade crossroads between the East and West. I will have to look for Robert Dwan's book. I thought I remember you writing that the book was difficult to find, but I also know that your comments span at least two years' time frame (based on You Tube's elapsed time notation), so perhaps new sources have been discovered?
@grouchomarx-youbetyourlife7476
@grouchomarx-youbetyourlife7476 8 жыл бұрын
Lois Simmons No, I never would have said that Dwan's book is difficult to find-- it's always been available on Amazon, and as of this typing, you can get a used copy now for a penny from resellers! :) www.amazon.com/As-Long-Theyre-Laughing-Groucho/dp/188766436X/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1476963337&sr=8-3&keywords=robert+dwan Groucho's book about YBYL, "The Secret Word Is Groucho," has been out of print for decades, but (a) you can still get used copies very easily, and (b) it's not as good a book as Dwan's (though it is well worth reading.) Most of what I know about the production side of the show comes from Dwan's book.
