THE US ARMY PONCHO IS GOOD WOODSCRAFT GEAR . IN THIS VIDEO I WILL SHOW YOU SEVERAL SIMPLE QUICK EASY SET UPS TO MAKE THE PONCHO SERVE AS A QUICK SHELTER /TENT. WE WILL SHOW THE LOW PUP TENT SET / THE LEANTO SET / THE DIAMOND OR SOMETIMES CALLED THE PLOWPOINT TENT SET UP. WE WILL SHOW MODS TO ADD A LOOP INTOTHE HOOD. THEN WE WILL SHOW A NEW TRICK NOT SEEN IN VIDEO BEFORE A WAY TO MAY A TENT STAKE LOOP THAT WILL NOT TANGLE YOU UP AND WILL MEAN YOU DONT HAVE TO TIE KNOTS OR CUT CORDS TO ATTACH A TENT STAKE TO A TARP. THESE MODS CAN BE DONE TO A RANGER ROLL PONCHO TO ADD MORE UTILITY.
SURPLUS GEAR IS A GREAT WAY TO GET GOOD WORKING GEAR ON A BUDGET. IN THIS VIDEO I WILL SHARE MY THOUGHTS ON WHY YOU SHOULD TAKE A LOOK AT SURPLUS GEAR TO BUILD YOUR CAR EMERGENCY OR BUGOUT BAG. I WILL DO An UPGRADE TO THE STANDARD ARMY PONCHO TO MAKE IT HAVE BETTER ABILITY AND TO SERVE AS A CAR EMERGENCY KIT FOR THOSE TIMES YOU FIND YOUR SELF BROKEN DOWN AND WAITING FOR A TOW TRUCK OR A FRIEND TO COME PICK YOU UP

It always amazes me how enthusiastic people get about bushcraft gear I guess because I always had a military canteen and shovel along with any surplus gear I could beg borrow or pickup as back as I can remember. I remember the first time I walked into the army navy store. It was like Christmas morning! And I'm talking about when I was only 7 or 8 years old and let me tell ya, that was a long time ago...

I usually build my poncho hooches lower to the ground, inside a large shrub or backed up to brush/etc to give more protection from the elements and more camouflaged. I also always pull the hood up, so you get all that extra space in there. I’ve had three people with gear inside, sheltering from bad weather.

Another great video, Blackie. Your comment about using a poncho as a sled or litter brought back old images - of a poncho covering someone who didn't make it. One old rule in the military... Be it a poncho, a combat dressing or other personal equipment, you did not use your own for someone else; you used theirs. Yours was to bandage, shelter, drag - or cover - you.

The 3 day training pack was designed to mate up with the LBV 88 as a butt pack. Or mounted high. The D ring went over the D ring on the back panel and the strap secured it.

@thetrailgoat

I can tell you from personal experience that you can not snap two ponchos together to make an A frame shelter and stay dry. It does not work. You have to overlap the ponchos at the ridge or you WILL get wet. The single poncho in an a frame was called a Hooch in the Army. The head end was next to a tree no higher than around 24 inches. The foot end was sloped lower. I would put my ruck at the head end and use the lumbar pad on the frame as a pillow. You got in and out by unhooking the poncho from a stake at the head end of the Hooch. During cold weather I would use two ponchos and liners, or Ranger Rolls, tied in opposite directions to make a Field Expedient “sleeping bag.” Although I didn’t have the reflective blanket in mine. I took that particular setup down to freezing temperatures wearing my M65 jacket and liner with long johns. I slept very warm and cozy in that setup.

Good stuff (as always) - thanks for sharing... Btw, I couldn't help but notice when you removed your hat to back into the "pup tent" configuration, that the hat is definitely a necessity in rain or sun... 😁. Take it from me - a "buzz cut" (1 n/8th inch) is so much cheaper to maintain, etc... Hope to make your acquaintance in the future (maybe at your upcoming gathering...?). Thankee agin!

That brings back a memory, there was a black double sided impregnated cloth carpet tape that was used in commercial aviation, if you crawled on that stuff, once the carpet was remove, even after years under the carpet, the glue on that tape could go through coveralls and stick to your knee skin, hands, nitrile gloves were toast. I think they called that tape tenacious as well. It'd peel skin.
